  1. One of our fans posted this link on KatFans... It's recruiting and it's rankings, so it does not mean much -- but you guys know how other schools and their fans like to tout these to help their programs... [Hidden Content] Quick SLC glance... SHSU - 65 A&M-CC - 86 TxSt-SM - 121 SLU - 135 McN - 137 UTSA - 165 Lamar - 181
  2. If you want the names of the applicants -- submit a FOI and get them. I'm sure the Beaumont Enterprise will, if they have not already -- even Perryn seems to have some journalistic-sense outside of commentary regarding cities and situations he is clueless about...
  3. Message to any potential Lamar recruits (and their parents)... According to Scalp'em...you will be playing Division II football. In turn, let us all proclaim Lamar as a Division II school across the board. Coaches from other schools -- feel free to recruit against Lamar, saying that they are not a Division I school. So says Scalp'em, so it's gotta be valid! You may think I'm being a jerk, but there are people out there, both recruits and their parents, that will hear from recruiters that FCS (formerly I-AA) schools are Division II and will negatively recruit against your program in all sports. These recruits and their parents will not necessarily always know any better. If Scalp'em has that attitude and recruits/parents read this board, which they do -- it does nothing to help your program.
  4. Scalp'em...it's not that easy. Lamar would want a home-and-home with schools it views as "like schools". If it was a guarantee game, that would be something. If it was a school like Texas Tech, who would do a two-for-one, that'd be another...but, would those schools be willing to schedule a home-and-home against Lamar? There's a reason a school like North Texas won't play SHSU or Lamar in men's hoops. Too much to lose and nothing to gain...same goes for Arkansas State/UCA in men's hoops (and football, for that matter)...
  5. What about the softball facility? ???
  6. I am honestly not a big fan of Perryn. He had an article earlier this season that did not sit too well for me, regarding the state of the city of New Orleans. There's more that I can say regarding said article, but it's not worth my time...
  7. If you do not play the sub-Div I schools, you'd probably be playing more guarantee games. None of the schools want that...as much as I want to phase it out, I think the SLC has tried, but the schools just couldn't get the amount of home games they wanted...and of course, as I noted on KatFans, all schools are different, whether it Texas vs Louisiana, football vs non-football and such. Each has different needs that need to be met...
  8. SHSU has had an even tougher time -- it's called undefeated in OOC play since Marlin's first year (a close loss to A&M). Marlin has lucked out by virtue of some relationships with other coaches (see Texas Tech and Central Florida)...
  9. I am not happy with either of these games nor the Butler vs USA game. Why were the top six mid-majors (arguably) playing each other?!?! Such garbage... (10) Davidson 82, (7) Gonzaga 76 (12) Western Kentucky 101, (5) Drake 99
  10. I believe the time period is the minimum amount of days that the ad needs to be posted (ABR and I were discussing this earlier) per state law...the job posting can be posted for several months...
  11. I've heard great things about Tidwell from people without Lamar connections. I've done my fair share of women's basketball this year and seen quite a few SLC schools. North Texas had that HC in place for quite some time. I'd be very interested to see who they hire. The fans want the old HC from UT-Arlington. As it relates to football, you guys aren't going to win right off the bat unless you schedule a slate that is winnable. SLU was 7-4 because they scheduled right -- that upset over McNeese was nice, but they beat all the sub-Div I teams, won their non-scholly game and split with the SWAC...
  12. SLU played a schedule that I think will be more like what you play. SLU played three SLC teams (San Marcos,McNeese, SHSU). Two SWAC squads (Alcorn, Valley), a transitional program (Northern Colorado), a young FCS program (Gardner Webb), a non-scholly Div I (Jacksonville) and the rest (UAM, Texas College and Mercyhurst) as sub-Div I. 2004 Hal Mumme (7-4) Date Opponent Result Score Site Att. 9/2 Arkansas-Monticello W 46-32 H 9,078 9/11 #6 McNeese State W 51-17 A 16,499 9/18 Texas State L 2ot 31-28 A 13,114 9/25 #24 Sam Houston State L 45-17 H 9,480 10/2 Mississippi Valley State W 33-17 H 9,021 10/9 Northern Colorado W 26-13 H-HC 8,322 10/16 Mercyhurst W 58-14 H 8,517 10/30 Alcorn State L 33-27 H 9,137 11/6 Jacksonville W 51-3 A 2,162 11/11 Texas College W 54-14 H 7,768 11/20 Gardner-Webb L 52-34 A 3,841 Ideal Year #1 Lamar Schedule, based off of what we see from SLU 2-3 SLC squads (not going to be an easy task by any means) 2 SWAC schools (very winnable ones at that, i.e UAPB, Valley) 1 or 2 new FCS programs (South Alabama perhaps? similar situation) 2 non-scholarship Div I (i.e Jacksonville, Dayton, Drake, etc) 3 sub-Div I regional schools (i.e Texas College, Belhaven, Angelo St, etc) Lamar should IMO be able to get five or six wins with this slate...
  13. From the USF Media Guide...should be noted they had 49k at their first game! Very nice! And maintained a good 30k+ at each game except a home win over Chuck South...wow, road trip to Cumberland! Date Opponent Site Result Attend. 14. I thought they won 80-3... [Hidden Content] In fact, all their wins came against non-scholarship Division I (those do exist) or sub-Div I football teams that year...as Charleston Southern was not Div I just yet... Would be a good story if they did lose 80-3...
  15. Calling a Division I program, "Division II" does not sit well with me, especially when the institution he is a fan of will also be playing at our level. Your buddy 'Scalp'em' pretty much called Lamar a "Division II program"... That does not help your program if any member of your fan base thinks you are a Division II program and it does not help the coaches who are attempting to recruit against schools that do use Division II in reference to your institution...
  16. SHSU, dominance in Div II football? Since your so adamant about putting us in Division II, can I call Lamar a Division II program? Apparently, we share the same conference and you guys are going to begin playing football (and will probably stick around while) in our Division II league... You do realize your ignorance is the same one that coaches are going to use to recruit against Lamar in football and you better believe, they're already doing it in basketball (which was actually a major reason they changed the name from I-AA to Division I Football Championship Subdivision and the champion to Division I national title -- people were using 'Div II' or 'Div I-AA' in other sports). Your just adding fuel to the fire... Hopefully, you will learn your lesson...I'm sure your future football coaches will be touting a Division I program in Beaumont. Perhaps you can get on board...
  17. ESPN does appear on the resume, made my national radio debut on there... SHSU has been to the Div I semifinals once and Div I quarterfinals twice in football...we've had our share of success in football, albeit, not as consistent as the Pokes...
  18. A&M? Funny -- since the NCAA allowed FBS schools to play FCS schools annually for one game to count towards bowl eligibility, A&M has just played Texas State - San Marcos. They seem to prefer the schools from outside of Texas (see The Citadel, Montana St). Louisiana has same problem. LSU will not play McNeese, SLU or Nicholls. They prefer to play Western Carolina and Appalachian St. Believe A&M is sticking out of state from here on out...
  19. UAPB... Holt steps down after six season at Arkansas-Pine Bluff Associated Press Updated: March 18, 2008, 4:49 PM ET PINE BLUFF, Ark. -- Arkansas-Pine Bluff men's basketball coach Van Holt resigned after six seasons following an 8-10 record in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The school announced Tuesday that Holt offered his resignation Monday. He led the Golden Lions (13-18) to their third consecutive SWAC postseason tournament. Holt finished 50-124 overall and 35-73 in the SWAC.
  20. Bring out the brooms, Cards! Baseball is one of those up in the air sports (like the golfs, though SFA has no women's golf) where Lamar and SHSU can make their move as far as Commish Cup goes. I think Lamar wins the thing, but it'd be nice if SHSU made a run!
  21. So do I -- made a mistake in my initial post... Not sure if I made that as a nod to my co-worker from WVU or because I actually made an intelligent pick!
  22. Bob and I are actually almost on the same page. I'll bold the ones I have from his listing... In the 8 vs 9 games, I’m taking three 9s — Arkansas over Indiana, Kent St. over UNLV and Oregon over Mississippi State. The only 8 I’m taking is BYU over Texas A&M. In the 7 vs. 10 games, I’m taking three 10s — Davidson over Gonzaga, St. Mary’s over Miami and Arizona over West Virginia. In the 6 vs. 11 games, I’m taking three 11s — St. Joseph’s over Oklahoma, Kentucky over Marquette and Baylor over Purdue. In the 5 vs. 12 games, I’m taking two 12s - George Mason over Notre Dame and Villanova over Clemson. I don’t have anybody higher than a 12 in the first round, although I was tempted to take No. 13 San Diego over No. 4 UConn. In round two, my upsets are Butler over No. 2 Tennessee, No. 6 USC over No. 3 Wisconsin and Drake over UConn. My regional semifinal upset is No. 3 Xavier over No. 2 Duke. The lone upset I see in a regional final is No. 2 Georgetown over No. 1 Kansas.
  23. Texas Tech is fighting their own battle right now to become more recognized and to get more funding in the state of Texas. They saw a situation with Angelo State where the San Angelo institution felt as they were being pushed around the TSUS and pretty much "used" for their large endowment (Carr Endowment). Tech knew Angelo State wanted out and made a quiet effort to get them in the fold. It happened and they are doing a lot to bolster Angelo State now. Sam Houston State and Texas State - San Marcos are the least likely to jump systems. Lamar on the other hand, like Angelo State, is probably not in the spot they would like to be within the TSUS. Texas Tech, being interested in "moving up" and getting more $$$ from the state knows that obtaining any institution for them would be huge in their plans. It's not surprising...
  24. You are just providing a sampling of programs... You would have to ask the TSUS how they bring about their tier system. It's been a few years since I was heavily involved in that racket. I do know in 2005 that when a certain San Marcos based institution, the Huntsville institution's student government presented a flagship feasibility study that laid out various factors that based on the TSUS criteria for tiers, SHSU was actually the top dog. No one ever hears Lamar in any argument regarding "status" in the system and still don't. I've told you before, when the name change got brought up, SHSU threw up a stink and Lamar was relatively quiet in comparison to the point SHSU ended up supplying extra protection to the name of their school (in similar nature to Tarleton St and Prairie View A&M) while Lamar is not as protected if they stay in the system or go elsewhere. Perhaps Lamar needs to work on this if they want more system support in terms of building up their athletic program to meet UNLV's standards for the program...while I have never heard it from anyone, I do believe that Lamar would have to take a ticket and wait behind the other two major institutions in the system before really doing much as far as "moving up" goes unless there is $$$ raised from the private sector that pushes them ahead of the others...or at the very least, SHSU... And I'll continue to stick by this belief until the system proves to me that in their mind, Lamar is considered "above" the other two schools. At this point, especially with a very SHSU-leaning Board of Regents and a very Texas St-San Marcos leaning Chancellor...I have a hard time believing that at this point...
  25. Are you discussing academics now? Are you guys really a 3rd tier institution. I know in the TSUS, you guys hold down the third spot behind the San Marcos and Huntsville based institutions.
