SHSU Does Right Thing, Hires from Within
TexasTerror replied to TexasTerror's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
I think it is a little early to call it the right thing... we'll see.
I disagree. Why change what has worked? SHSU has had a successful program and Hooten has been with it for four years, having a large role in bringing in the recruits that have helped the Bearkats be in the top part of the league for several years. Hooten understands the importance of academics and will continue the role that it plays with our basketball program (let's keep the SLC Student-Athlete MBB Player of the Year streak alive!). Why hire from the outside when you risk losing recruits, risk losing the continuity and risk bringing in someone who does not put a high priority on academics? -
The NCAA might move up to 96 teams. This could make it easier for a new conference to get an auto without the 6/5 rule.
How so? I think the NCAA will be capping FBS at the 136 teams (12 teams x 10 conference, 13 teams x 1 conference, 3 independents). No new conferences. If you are not in the top 136 (that 13 team conference is the MAC by the way) or not already an independent, you are S.O.L.

Huntsville Item is reporting Hooten...
HUNTSVILLE — The Huntsville Item has learned that Jason Hooten will be named the new Sam Houston State head basketball coach Friday. The Sam Houston State athletic department will issue a press release naming the former Bearkat assistant coach as Bob Marlin's replacement Friday morning.
[Hidden Content]

I have a hard time believing this, but two newbie posters started separate threads regarding Reggie Theus coming to Sam Houston State to become head coach of the Bearkats... Thought you guys would enjoy a chuckle with me, of course - unless this is legit. Still, hard to fathom this as a possibility...

First Spring Football Scrimage
TexasTerror replied to LU4LIFE's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Last Friday with another scheduled for this Thursday, I understand, so the players can spend a long Easter weekend with their families if possible.
Any recap of the happenings? Stats? Names of impact players? Did not see one on Lamar's site - did the BMT Enterprise or PA News get it? -

Was the scrimmage this past Friday? Or this next Friday? Trying to gauge who is doing what for the Cards - at this juncture. -

Further news...another media source in Lafayette is reporting that he'll meet with them this weekend...looking like Marlin, but still not official per the Lafayette media...
Actually, ESPN1420 has learned that Marlin will meet with UL President Dr. Joe Savioe on Sunday to make if official. And unless "T-Joe" just hates him, he's our guy. T-Joe isn't going to hate him.
[Hidden Content] But, the Huntsville Item saying it's a done deal... HUNTSVILLE — Bearkats basketball coach Bob Marlin is leaving Sam Houston State. A week after taking his Sam Houston State team to the NCAA tournament, Marlin accepted the head coaching position at Louisiana-Lafayette, sources told The Huntsville Item on Friday afternoon. [Hidden Content] Sam Houston State's top candidates are most likely UALR head coach Steve Shields, Texas assistant Rodney Terry, Texas A&M assistant Scott Spinelli and former Villanova assistant/Milby HS start Chris Walker...

Yep...Marlin to ULL.
Sam Houston State’s Bob Marlin removed himself for consideration for the University of Houston head coaching job. One person familiar with the search said Marlin accepted the head coaching job at Louisiana-Lafayette on Friday morning and is meeting with his team in the afternoon to explain the situation to his players.
[Hidden Content] Or wait, has he? Conflicting reports from the "hometown fishwrap"...
Pending the outcome of this weekend's meeting with UL, the university plans to release a statement. The Houston Chronicle has reported that Marlin removed himself from consideration for the University of Houston job and accepted the Cajuns opening on Friday morning, but sources close to the situation say that the decision is not yet final by UL or Marlin.
[Hidden Content]

Bob Marlin is also a candidate for UTEP job

LAMAR FOOTBALL: Practice report day 4
TexasTerror replied to KFDM COOP's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Lamar has plenty of resources, including more than several schools that have already had football and a more challenging team sport slate to manage (notably those with fewer hands on deck and softball in place). It's not as difficult as it would seem, so the excuses do not measure up. Thanks to former caveman for expressing his support and knowledge... It should be a priority and it is important from a visual perspective for those from outside the Golden Triangle. If Lamar wants 63 scholarships all going to GT players, they will end up where they were during their last stay in the SLC - the cellar. More and more schools are recruiting Texas. It's time to extend your wings and make a run at guys elsewhere. Just ask UNLV about his real beloved program, our HoopInsider about his or AggiesAreWe about his. Plenty of news from the official sources... -
Yeah sorry we don't put everything on our site. Just about everybody in our AD went to Austin to watch the ladies play.
Well, that's the excuse for the past few days, but what about ever? I know you guys are new to football, but it is typical for most schools for spring football to... a) Post a schedule of practices, scrimmages and the 'climax' (Red-White Game, whatever) b) Post occasional updates of practice and if not that, at the very least the scrimmages I really thought Lamar would be doing a release every few weeks this past fall of the happenings of fall practice. Never. Never any notice of any of the scrimmages, etc. The complete opposite of any other up-start in the country, even the non-scholarship ones. You can say that it is in the local media, but as I said before - if I'm Joe Recruit and I am checking your school out, I am looking at the web site and not the newspaper. Having been part of the recruiting process for student-athletes, they or the parents compliment the web site and other information available at their fingertips (especially families outside of the region who would not be able to make as many games). Just surprising... -

Wait...practice started??? ??? No spring schedule on the Lamar athletic web site - [Hidden Content] In fact, the only stories are about signings and Todd Whitten. Spring practice must be just as important as last fall's practice...talk about momentum killing. -

Having attended the game - SHSU's game plan WORKED. Bob Marlin out-coached Scott Drew. Anyone that was at the game could realize as much, seeing how frustrated the Baylor offense was. The only thing that did not work - the Bearkats' shots were not falling.
“We’ve never seen a triangle and two,†Udoh said. Said Sam Houston coach Bob Marlin: “Our defensive game plan was good the entire ballgame. I thought we … did the things we needed to do, but we just didn’t make enough shots to win the game.â€
SHSU far from embarrassed the SLC. The media in NOLA was thoroughly impressed based on conversations I had. One member of the media did ask me if Lamar was still in the SLC, or if they had moved to Division II. Heard they were starting a football team, but was not sure if LU was playing in the Gulf South Conference or the Southland. They recalled the Cards from the American South days in NOLA and had not heard much a *peep* from them since... Oh, Billy Tubbs was one of the possible answers to a question on the video board.

UTSA Announces 2010, Partial '11 Schedule
TexasTerror replied to TexasTerror's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Nothing impressive until 2013, which all are unconfirmed. I'll be surprised if KSU sticks with that game, I hear they have bought out the UNT game next season @ Denton but I don't remember seeing anything official on that.
2011 is a startup schedule... 2012 is a full FCS schedule... I have a hard time believing they will have problems delivering on EIGHT games against FBS competition in 2013. The scheduling is solid for the future... -
FYI...a school that is slightly behind you in the process. UTSA's AD says the goal in 2013 is for FIVE home games against FBS and at least THREE road games against FBS. San Antonio Express-News confirms a 3 year (2-for-1) deal with Baylor. 2011 9-3... NORTHEASTERN STATE (OK) 9-10... McMURRY 9-17... at Southern Utah 9-24...
Guess that is why TX St RPI is greater than ours right now....
LU Baseball Fan, Lamar had to win 11 games to get to 54 in RPI. TXST had to win just five to get to 58. TXST's RPI will improve as the teams they beat do well against decent competition, especially when they play Texas, A&M and TCU forthcoming. Lamar's RPI will suffer regardless of what the teams they play do afterwards, since they play in weaker conferences. TXST's schedule is built for making the NCAAs as an at-large. Per WarrenNolan, TXST has a SoS of 17. Lamar is 169. [Hidden Content] A lot of us are good at polishing turds (hey UNLV!), but the facts speak for themselves.
Despite an awful team, it comes down to Lamar @ Nicholls on Saturday. The winner gets the 8th spot.
Are we sure about that? It does move Lamar back into a tie, but the Cards have tiebreakers against NWST and McN? 8) Nich 6-9 ------------ NWST 5-10 Lamar 5-10 McN 5-10
-
Lamar has the toughest road here... NWST - vs SHSU (15-1), at SLU (8-6) McNeese - at SLU (8-6), vs UCA (2-12) Nicholls - at UTA (8-6), vs Lamar (5-9) Lamar - vs TAMU-CC (8-6), at Nicholls (5-9) Just think Lamar is toughest, despite records since that game at Nicholls could be a "win and in" game for both teams and it's at one of the tougher places traditionally to play in the SLC. The game vs A&M-CC is as tough as any other, especially since the Isles are having a tough run of things now and will be itching to get a win and some momentum heading in... I say McNeese, followed by Nicholls, NWST and Lamar are the toughest schedules (from easy to toughest) with Lamar the toughest.
