Depends on the organization and coach. But overall, yes Kobe IS correct. But playing AAU ball, even for a coach that doesn't teach you anything, is better than sitting at home all summer playing video games or getting into trouble. It's the lessor of two evils.

Can you guys quit comparing them? John is a better scorer. Josh is a better distributer. They play the game completely different. They are two of the best players in the setx area. They play for the same team and neither of them care who you guys think is better. Let them play basketball and have this discussion at the end of the season.

Memorial has talent and a new coach implementing not only a new system but a new attitude, there will be ups and downs.  Once the door closes to all the kids leaving or just not wanting to  play at Memorial  and the pride comes back they will be a force to be reckoned with.

i think ppl who don't really know sports just like to talk. Ppl still havent learned it doesn't matter what so callled classification you are or wherever you are from if you can play that particular sport well and do it as a team you have a chance to beat anybody. Never underestimate your opponent because you feel like your 6a and their 2a. But is their overall basketball game a 2a . Big Sandy would give alot of teams problems because just like in every sport its about matchups and which ones will be exploited. A la Golden St. , Boise St ,or Monmouth. Stop putting labels on these teams and watch them play thats the only thing that matters at the end of the day. CAN YOU PLAY...PERIOD...

A lot of good points made. I agree with both sides of the argument. But you can't really generalize it. It really does depend on the coach and environment of the AAU organization. I coach both AAU and High School ball, so I see the benefits from both sides. Like it or not, AAU ball does help the individual develop his skill set. If you play for a coach that just rolls the ball out and tells you to get after it and go to work, then no, the player will not develop his basketball IQ or concept of playing team basketball. Regardless, he will play tougher competition and will be better for it. It does however drive me crazy to watch coaches just play man to man an entire AAU season. They aren't learning the complete game of basketball. If these kids go to college, they will HAVE to learn multiple defenses and speeds at which to play the game. I can speak for my Defenders team and say that we run 2-3, 1-2-2. 1-3-1, man, half court traps, full court press, multiple inbound plays, press breaks...we mix it up. I teach my kids the value of keeping the other team off balance and playing to the our opponents weakness. Last year my team consisted of the following players through out the year:
Tevin Baker, John Kraemer and Dareiyus Richard from Beaumont Kelly. Jase Miguez and Kevin Howard from Nederland. Michael Saladin and Jamerson Roberts from Hardin Jefferson. Devin Ellis and Geary Senigaur from Central. Josh Hockless from Baytown Lee.
I would consider Baker, Kraemer, Richard, Miguez, Howard, Saladin and  Roberts some of the better players in SE Texas. I coach them, feed them, raise money for them, travel with them...and it's all for them. I want them to learn the game, have fun, build friendships, see new places and stay out of trouble in the summer. Last year when we went to New Orleans, it was the first time for most of the guys to be there. And wrapping up the day with Xbox tournaments in the room seems to be the highlight of their day. These are experiences that they will look back on and remember forever. So try not to paint it with a broad brush

I don't differentiate between early season tournaments and non-district games.  You try and get your team as good as they can be going into the "meat" of the season.  I am of the camp that the best way to get better is by playing the best competition you can find.  There's a reason Sigler at Silsbee and Davis at HJ (for example) put together schedules like they do.  Even if Silsbee had lost by 10 or so to Central the other night (as most expected), does that game get them better more than a 83 point beatdown against PNG?  I think that's an easy answer.  Ozen will be better for having played PV than if they had played SATCH JV.  And maybe as important, win or lose today, they probably are going to get in better work than the Jags will running through Sharpstown like a knife through butter.
You guys need to visit the cool side of the pillow more often ;)

I'm am one of the biggest tiger fans around and silsbee probably will have one of the most talented teams in the state bur just as people are saying central was supposed to beat silsbee and I agree with that let's not get these young tigers to pumped up it is a 1 game focus remember last year when it took silsbee every thing they had to beat lcm there and they came back home and beat them by at least 40 the central win was awesome but they have a lot of work to do  its hard to win state there might be refs that could make it hard for us if they don't like the style we play silsbee should win it all we also need to keep these kids encourage with their grade so we have everyone there when the playoffs come I'm not raining on the parade but I've seen it happen to much to silsbee let's stay focus play every game with heart and have fun ,as far as ozen goes remember when arthur louis was the football coach and they lost to newton well we know how that went no team is scared of silsbee and silsbee is not scared of anyone but there are a lot of politics in place.

As i stated in an earlier post that SATCH would beat API but someone said it couldn't happen too much talent ...my take on some of these loaded D1 teams yea they are nice teams, good eye candy but when a team gets in your ishhhh youll find out where their heart is... One thing i know about Caldwell he is a TRUE COMPETITOR an outright dog, give me that over some grown men hyping up kids and selling them like livestock to make a name for themselves.. And no thats not saying the kids cant play but hey it is what it is right!!!!!!

He got zero playing time as an 8th grader(grades).  As a coach especially on the junior high level were its not about winning, Im trying to teach and build character especially with Josh due to his environment.  That year was mostly about learning how to be an upstanding young man in society...a time for positive growth and decision making.  Certain people close to him were not helping the situation during that year.  I can't really tell you if I made any improvements on his character because I don't see him that often, but from what I ve been told from others is that he has improved and that's all I wanted, but still dealing with former.  Im glad that he's getting out of SETX so he can learn to be on his own and make responsible decisions without others in his ear and I hope those others don't follow him.  His playing abilities has given him opportunities, but the strength of his character will see him thru in life.

This is where my opinion takes criticism.  Don't get me wrong...great honor. And he definitely worked his way into a position to be a very successful coach.  With a resume that no doubt deserves a Hall of Fame induction.  And wins is what gets you there.
But keep this in mind.. Phil Jackson didn't win any championships without MJ or Kobe. None.
So you guys saying that he is the greatest Texas high school coach that's ever lived...I think that the greatest coaches alive today are probably people you've never heard of.  A good coach in my opinion is someone who has his/her team competing every single game especially with lesser talent.  Because the only thing that changes from year to year is the talent you have. Coaches become better coaches with more exposure to experience.  So if a coach wins a championship one year because he is a "better coach" then why doesn't that coach continue to win championships every year?  Because they have different players.
Anyways.. Congrats.  Truly a great honor.

Not in Beaumont. You have to attend the school that you are zoned for. His guardian is zoned for Central. If you attend a school outside your zone, you will face eligibility issues and not be allowed to play. I know everyone has their own opinion about how and why this went down. I will try to help out a little on some of the subtle accusations....
    1) Nigerian kids school shuts down in Atlanta.
    2) Nigerian kids are relocated to stay with guardian in Beaumont the following week.
    3) Guardian has a kid at Kelly...attempts to enroll both kids at Kelly.
    4) Kelly starts school 2 weeks before everyone else in this area, so it was too late to get them in and NOT BE BEHIND academically. (Which is paramount at Kelly)
    5) Guardian decides to enroll kids in zoned school...Central
    6) UIL and every other "expert" in Southeast Texas try to determine whether or not the kids are eligible to play.
And that's where we are folks. Nothing underhanded, no school favoritism, no recruiting. It is fun to watch the back and forth on here, but at the end of the day, this is just a story about two kids that came here for a better life, got screwed in Atlanta and now attend Central High School. They are nice boys and I hate that they are having to adjust like this. And the guardian is making a huge sacrifice, both financially and with his time. 7'3" and 6'5" kids don't eat Happy Meals from McDonalds! Hell I have a 5'9 kid that's eating me out of house and home! lol

At the end of the day who cares . I mean like i said before ,ppl should be happy this is happening in SETX . Never before has a player caused this much stir and it doesn't matter where he ends up out here just know eveyone playing against him will have an opportunity to be seen. Now what you do with it is totally up to you. Tired of these adults crying , nobody and i mean nobody would turn down 7'2 if eveything is in order....with that roll the balls and lets  hoop.....

Its not AAU. Again, AAU or summerball events  are the little guys in all of this and nobody is pointing fingers at the real culprits who drives the whole show, AAU  can't do anything WITHOUT the blessings of a few higher entities also involved. I guess its just easier to pick on grassroots programs and leave the bigdogs  blameless. I've said this a hundred times, there is NO LIVE PERIOD unless the NCAA says so.
Yall do know the NBA have camps in Africa and other foreign soils and you know why, right?
