BREAKING Crosby hires HFC/AD Joe Willis
Cougar14.2 replied to Matthew328's topic in High School Football
Lol, maybe in the past but if the coach doesn't check that "moved for athletic purposes" box on the PAPF then you're good. In most cases the coaches at the schools kids are leaving from know why the kids are leaving and sign their paperwork without issue. For instance, Channelview's district MVP QB from last year just transferred to CE King. Kid's family probably never even moved to Sheldon and Coach Hurts still signed his paperwork. I never said anything about CE King's old QB being D1 or going pro? I said he would be furthering his college athletic career now that he moved and had another opportunity. Going 11-1 and then winning the Bayou Bowl MVP seemed like it worked out awfully well for him vs sitting on the bench for a year. Not sure what not getting an opportunity to play in college because you sat on the bench all year would've taught him? So what did his dad gain him? A subsidized and basically free education when you add his academic aid. Make sure you're not getting the path of least resistance confused with the path less traveled. Joe Burrow wouldn't have gained anything by continuing to sit behind Dewayne Haskins and Justin Fields at Ohio State so he could "learn to deal with adversity". Matter of fact his eligibility would've expired without him even playing a meaningful snap. He believed in himself and transferred to LSU and became the #1 pick in the draft though. -

She's good on social media but is going to have trouble answering to college personnel directors about a football player's lateral quickness or about a guard's mid-range game. She's really going to be a plus for girls' sports recruiting due to her high activity level on social media though. She's also going to be our head girls track coach which may be concerning to some considering she couldn't really win anything even with all the thoroughbreds North Shore has roaming the campus. This hire was also directed by the supt. -

It's a new day, with open enrollment schools everywhere parents are moving their children to a place where they have the best opportunity for success. My co-worker's son was the starting QB for CE King two years ago, a new staff came in and said they were running a different system and that the QB job was probably going to go to a kid that just transferred in. Instead of keeping him there with the new coach my co-worker got an apartment in New Caney so his son could play there. He ended up leading New Caney to an 11-1 season and furthering his opportunity to play college football. He could've stayed and learned the lesson of dealing with adversity, but he transferred and learned the lesson that "if you believe in yourself you can create your own path to success." As far as loyalty, one of Crosby's 8th grade QBs transferred to BH. The kid's dad is way more hard core Crosby than I am, and almost loyal to a fault. Now his son is in a 10x better situation because he broke that loyalty. The kids aren't leaving just because of the coach. They're leaving because it's about to be July and they haven't ran a single offensive play or defensive set. Moreover, they don't even know who's on the coaching staff yet? Willis just put out a tweet last week asking for coaching resumes, but I'm sure in his interview he told the supt. he already had everything covered. Our supt. just isn't competent enough to vet things on the athletic side. It no surprise that the 6'3" receiver transfer you were depending on contributing this season hasn't shown up to a single workout after you say you want to run the ball 80% of the time. I would go ahead and count him as gone too. At the end of the day though, the head football coach will always have support from the parents of borderline kids who just want to see their kid get on the field. -

Exactly, just a blind shot in the dark with not a single fact related to Crosby. No reputable coach even wants to work for the guy. -

What are you even making the comparison for then? "Jon Kay's teams played hard at North Shore." You think you're going to still make that type of statement if he went 2-8 at Galena Park and his teams lost by an average of 20+ppg? The last three years he's 14-20. I've probably watched 10-12 Tyler Legacy games since we've hired him while I'm sure you've watched none. Those teams didn't play hard, even with multiple high major Alabama level FBS players, and Legacy certainly wasn't headed in the right direction. He doesn't have near the attraction he did at other places like CP and CH. The guy he offered the OC job to turned it down and the DC is also coming out of retirement after giving up 37ppg last year. Some kids that were going to have a major impact on the program have already transferred, especially the kid we lost to North Shore. You can think whatever you want to think but as someone who knows nothing about the inner-workings of Crosby and even less about the current personnel in the program outside of what gets talked about here on SETX I don't think your opinion is based in any fact whatsoever. -

Lol, I can’t even stand all that blue during track meets. I wish he had this kid back at Crosby now though. He left because he was in the same class with little Prieto and wasn’t going to beat him out. Now we lost two stud qbs because of this grease fire and will probably be rolling with Willis’ son at qb. -

Fan is short for fanatic. Usually fanatics can’t see without team colored glasses. I’m Crosby to the core but some things are just blatantly obvious, like Crosby being 6 days away from summer workouts starting and still not having a coaching staff. Seems like nobody want to work for the guy people here think is a solid hire. -

There is something to that. What sucks is when you have a bunch of homegrown kids and lose to one of those teams though. Almost everybody you play deep in the 5A and 6A playoffs have free agents though. It's just like the transfer portal in college now, if you want to be/stay competitive you get with the game. CE King looks like they're trying to become a Desoto to North Shore's Duncanville and one that they all have in common is open enrollment. The only way to combat playing some of those all-start teams is to get into the talent acquisition business yourself -

You won't. After Levi graduates I doubt I even care about Crosby athletics anymore. I'll take my classmate's advice, who's the assistant AD in Galena Park ISD, and probably move my other sons to North Shore where there's a lot more stability and opportunity. I was asked during his sophomore year at the powerlifting meet to bring him to Channelview. I let him make the choice and he wanted to stay and now his recruiting has been killed because of it. My next son to play varsity is who I refer to as my "prize steer", I won't be allowing the trash that goes on at Crosby to cause detriment to any of his future chances. Willis will probably be gone in three years anyway, I think he was just searching for a place little Johnny could play without much blowback from the community. It's so bad right now I bet he could probably go 12-18 in that three year stretch and still keep his job. Supt will say "but look what he did in 2012!" -

Yeah, the few that are still left are meeting with him individually this week and finding out their fates. IDK if it's to let the kids have camp time or because he wanted more time to build his staff but Summer workouts aren't even starting until June 12th this year instead of the Monday after school like normal. Seems like you would want the kids out there ASAP considering you'll only have 3.5 days on the job before he kids are out for the Summer. I think the four day week got the teacher shortage taken care of. The pay scale is also getting closer to where it should be for a town with Crosby's tax base. -

I heard the same thing this weekend but why did we have to get to this point before she decided to give in to a basic ask that any decent coach is going to have for his kids? You can tell she's feeling the pressure because she made sure the practice fields and game field information got out to the "correct" people. -

Riordan and Prieto were loved by the players and community, yet both had to leave due to administrative issues. Sounds like Willis might be the right fit after all? I'm sure he'll be overjoyed when he walks out on the practice field and watch kids try to dodge sprained ankles while they karaoke before practice. Maybe he can finally get the new helmets Coach P was asking for or different jerseys than the ones we wore at state three years ago? The supt. wouldn't even give Coach P money to fix the field house my dad worked out in in the 70's that the kids still use to this day. Crosby is a lot better job on the surface than it is once you get below it. Nothing near the trajectory it was when Riordan took over for Flannigan. -

I was being facetious when I said "60 years old", guess that's a little tough to pick up for the guys that used DOS? I'm sure Coach Hurts is about 50 and I think he would've been a great at Crosby. Reginald Samples is probably over 60 and just won his first state title, Willie Williams wasn't from off from that at La Vega when he won his first title. It's about the culture fit, which is a lot closer to Tyler than anything comparable to Cedar Park. -

If Eudy plays QB and we found some trench guys Crosby had a chance to be extremely good this year. There are no holes in any of the offensive skill positions or on the back 7 of the defense. Hiring a guy 4 days before school is over doesn't bode well for any success though. Coach P came late in '19 and it was six weeks into the season before we could even line up correctly in his offense, hence the .500 finish. I see a lot of the same in store. It's an even worse situation now since about 70% of the coaching staff has left/is leaving too. -

I'm not sure I've heard a Crosby fan talking about winning the district in over a decade? Not that we don't want to but it's kind of the lowest form of accomplishment(to us) outside of finishing 4th in the district. Two of the last three times Crosby went to the semifinals we didn't even win the district outright. PNG is in a different situation than Crosby, it's a more ready made situation to win there. Crosby hired a guy based on what he did a decade ago at a school that's nothing like ours. You look at the last 8 years of his record and probably not too many people are excited about getting a guy that's 54-42. Winning does solve everything but why not hire a guy that's winning at a school similar to yours already? -

Not since Kevin Flannigan left has a Crosby football coach played politics. Riordan wouldn't let some kids play defense but that wasn't politics, that was his coaching philosophy. The GCM receiver is going to start and might be asked to play both ways, he's literally been force fed the ball during 7 on 7 this offseason (games his dad and I watched together). The reason they left is more basketball related, they didn't feel Haggerty was enough of a team player and basketball was important to them so they went to GCM. The older brother isn't the level of athlete at the younger brother -

Spoken like someone who knows nothing about Crosby. The best that happened to Crosby was hiring Jeff Riordan. It was such a night and day difference between him and Flannigan. Young ~35 year old guy that elevated our participation rates made the game/practice fun for the kids instead of the old school way Flannigan went about it that turned kids off and had nothing but core kids coming out. Prieto was 36 when we hired him and he continue that trend. Most important thing is where they came from and what they won with though. Both offensive minded coaches which went hand in hand with your personnel that the Crosby community produces. Both coached in places where the talent was in the 65%-75% percentile and beat pretty much everyone they could when the talent gap wasn't too large. The hiring party's logic is that the community was incensed about losing the coach and the safe hire was someone that could mitigate questions on her intent getting rid of Coach P. -

Only difference is Crosby doesn't have the Hutchins Twins(Thomas Hutchins 5A player of the year), Myles Cheatum, an NFL caliber left tackle and average about 6'3" and 285lbs across the line of scrimmage. Other than that we're just like those Cedar Park teams. Aledo didn't blast Crosby because y'all were just unbelievable at the skill positions, it was because we couldn't compete at the line of scrimmage. We still have those issues. -

Those weren't Joe Willis' schemes, those were put in place by Chris Ross who built the CP program into what it was before Willis took over in 2012 and won a title. The offenses he ran at CH and TL don't look anything like those smash mouth offenses he ran at CP. You could run that at CP because at that time they were probably the most physically imposing team in the class. That '14 team probably isn't even top 5, we just got a great draw by going D-II and ran through a bunch of Beaumont, Port Lavaca and a down Brenham. We were better in '15 but drew a powerhouse FB Ridge Point in the 2nd round I'm not at all bashing the coach, I just believe we could've done better. We have some certified thoroughbreds about to come through the program and I don't want to see them wasted on a guy standing in or someone who isn't totally engaged. Not saying Willis won't be but I feel a lot more certain other guys would've been. Ross, Willis and Abseck were great at CP because of how great CP naturally was at the line of scrimmage. CH was recruited pretty well on o-line also. Yet, you can give him an Alabama caliber RB and defensive linemen at TL and he can't get over .500 because there's not that wide gap in physicality he had at CP. I do like that fact that he's multiple in his offensive scheme though. -

I don't know the entire application list but I was actually floored by the quality of candidates we had. Maybe it's the $140k that I heard Ricky Tullos got offered that made the list more appealing but in her somewhat defense she used the same hiring committee process that got us Prieto. Now in actuality the way we got the last two coaches was because Dr. Moore knew Riordan from being out in East Texas and our interim supt. before this one knew Coach P from his days in Cypress ISD. With the quality of candidates it was going to be hard for her to "mess up" the hire though. Those resumes from guys with rings just took precedent over ones from coaches like the one from Fort Bend that doesn't have any but it well on his way to being an NCAA coach -

You know how critical I am of questionable stuff and I'm here to tell you I would've been 1000% Prieto starting starting his son at QB as a freshman if Eudy didn't play. Kid is an absolute stud and would've broken every passing record at the school except for maybe Kellen Haynes single season yards record. Remember that freshman QB that touched us up in the A&M Consol. game, little Prieto had that level talent.
