Ok here is the run down on Ozen, Administration from the BISD School Board and Leaders From Thomas who actually created the school, too Lambert who pretty much had her hands on the dismantling of the Coaching Staff who finally had the program heading in the right directions tore down OZEN.. Thomas opened the school and Hired the Right Coach for the JOB (A. Louis) but he thought he could run Louis's program from the BIG HOUSE (Jerry Jones Style).. We all know how that ended after 4 straight playoff appearances and District Championship. After yrs of coaching changes and playoff droughts Jeff Nelson got a staff together w/ former players (Ed Taylor, Caleb Ceaser, Fred Strange) and coaches who could motivate and discipline kids (Tony Brown Sr., Malcolm Frank, the late John Clayton Jr.) kids and community came together for Nelson and they made probably one of the best runs in BISD in the past few yrs. knocking off and undefeated Barbers Hill, top 5 state ranked Brehnam, and lost a close regional semi final game to state ranked Lamarque.. then came back the next yr with less talent and again made play offs but that was too much for Lambert to deal with since she was PRO Central.. She went after Nelson since OZEN isnt whats suppose to be right in her eyes... OZEN has always been the district step child and the former Administration is to blame.. Almost forgot lets go ahead and bring in Magee and really send the program down the DRAIN    

Yes, but they were all in a district playing against each other, they didn't get their door blown off until they got to the playoffs.

Beaumont ISD has done a disservice to the school, the kids, the parents and the community. The travel in the district they "probably" would have been in would not have been that bad. They would have replaced Navasota and the longest trip would have been Livingston. That is a trip both Ozen and Central have made numerous times.

I hope he makes the best decision for HIM. Go where you will be happy for the next 3/4/5 years.

The whole point is that BISD is not going to let them compete with like sized schools. They are going to force them to play up a classification and therefore put them at a disadvantage on the football field.

So, did anyone ever answer my original question? Good luck to Colmesneil in their coaching search. I know a couple guys interested if you want some good "Rookie Head Coaches." I think you would like either of the two!    

Coaching matters.

I know it would be the easy thing to do.  I just don't know why they would put Coldspring and LaMarque in the same district in Region 4.  LaMarque I could see no doubt...but I still like to think that UIL at least keeps the regions geographically sensible.  Coldspring is a lot further north than the typical region 4..at least when you consider Hardin, Anahuac, and East Chambers have actually been in and out of region 4 already.  
Honestly I don't know tho...UIL definitely does not always do things that make sense.

But the fun will be back, they will be highly competitive and enthusiastic and tough to beat..

I wish that admin, whoever he/she is, would show themselves and own up to BG.  Then we can let bygones be bygones and get things back to normal around here...

For those of us outside the listening area, an update would be nice. Nations everywhere are sitting on pins and needles.

Wrong, wrong, wrong and still wrong. Three yards and a cloud of dust is garbage. You can NOT completely stop the teams in that District. Defense and ball control are not the way to go. Nobody with any sense will tell you that Southlake and Highland Park out athlete people. These are the type of kids on the Hill. Do NOT pigeon hole them because of the color of their skin or their academic abilities. This is the type of program where you can teach the kids highly intuitive concepts in the passing game and running game, be multiple and check plays at the line based on the fronts and coverage. You can take advantage of what the defense gives you because of the intelligence of the kids. Also, because of the financial advantage of the community, these kids will get the best individual coaching possible. If you commit to the passing game, you will have multiple kids with specialized training and receivers with great route running skills because the parents will seek out the extra coaching the high school staff can not give them because of UIL restrictions. Vision and progress, NOT turn back the clock to some OLD ways. Tried and failed.

Going about this all wrong, in my humble opinion. They really need someone without a pedigree. Somebody that can come in with some innovative ideas and really connect with the kids. Somebody with the personality and charisma to play the political game in the community, but a coach with a passion for coaching and some new ideas to inspire these kids to think differently about the Offensive side of the ball.

You don't have to buy it, I'm not trying to sell you on it. Nor am I making excuses or did I say it couldn't be done. As I stated before, only about 12% of the total US population is black yet 60% of the males incarcerated are black. That's what I mean by viewing survival differently in different places. That's not a coincidence the numbers look like that, it's a direct reflection of choices and opportunities. It's kind of like saying Native Americans have problems with alcoholism, then getting to actually go to indian reservations and finding out what the basis of the problem is. Before I saw it myself I was actually believing what Tom Daschle stood in front of my political science class saying, my opinions changed and I even vote democrat. If you've never had to live in the environment some of these kids come from then you'll never fully grasp it.  
It's kind of relative when you say "privilege" too. Obviously you were un-athletic but in every other instance of life I would be willing to bet you were more "privileged" than this kid was. Even in a case like Tony Brown being arrested at Alabama the decision he made for that to happen is probably one a kid from Bridge City doesn't make. Growing up in Beaumont you've probably seen the police pick with you for what you deem minor infractions. He probably saw the police being there as picking with him, similar to what may have happened to him or his buddies at home, and reacted accordingly. The BC kid has probably never had a run-in with the police other than a traffic violation and therefore would be more compliant.
Yes kids make bonehead decisions, I'm just highlighting why in some places some of those dumb decisions get you stuck in the mud and others get you a prison sentence.        

I agree with the loss of playing time being the most valuable tool we have as coaches to punish, but it is hard in off season to find a viable option. I'm just not sure if using things described in this article are viable options either. Making kids work hard is counter productive in my mind. Encouraging, pushing, reminding them that how much playing time they get and how competitive they will be relies on how hard they work. But, if you have to make a kid work hard, is really ever going to help you win? Coaches, and I am a coach, sometimes go overboard in their desire to get kids to do the right thing.

They will not find a man more committed to Hemphill than John Launius was. Dumbest move they could have made. I'm sure there are some locals that were mad because the coaches son was the Quarterback. Such crap. John has always been a kids first coach. He learned from the best as a player for John Outlaw in high school. Hemphill made a huge mistake getting rid of him.
