The #10 state ranked Silsbee Tigers will take on the top ranked #1 Houston Jack Yates Lions in a Class 3A Region III Regional Quarterfinal, TONIGHT, 6pm at Johnson Coliseum on the campus of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville. Silsbee (25-9) defeated Yates district counterpart in Houston Kashmere, 98-82 Friday night to advance to the 3rd round. Yates (28-4) took down Hardin-Jefferson Thursday, 119-91, to advance to the quarterfinals. This will be the first ever meeting between these two schools. Silsbee lost to Cleveland the next year in quarterfinals 60-59.

It was somebody up north, Jacksonville I think.  They were a good team but not even good enough to win their district.  They weren't going to Austin, they were just happy to be there and if you're going out why not go out valiantly to the best, right?  Well that's not how it worked out.  Everything they threw up went in.  And the longer it went the worse it got.  It was like the Absent Minded Professor sneaked in and ironed flubber on their shoes.  They could do no wrong.  They couldn't believe it themselves when it was over.  I've seen teams celebrate after winning the State Championship in the Drum but I've never seen a high school team celebrate a win with such pure shocked elation.  Some of our guys were in tears of course but SO WERE SOME OF THEIRS!!! Just out of pure surprise and perfect joy.  It was like the last scene on the barricade in Les Miserables.  I think I saw long dead players from that school's distant past, back from the grave in spectral form, waving flags and singing the school song in upper deck.  We stumbled out of the arena there in Lufkin sort of in a daze.  I can remember through the nightmarish fog mumbling incoherently about it being God's will or something like that.  The next year Silsbee made it to the semifinals with a team that wasn't as good. It forever burned the "any given night" truism into my consciousness.  Does Silsbee have a chance?  Oh yea, at this level everybody has a chance against everybody.  My prediction?  I predict a 25 point win for Yates but I'm hoping for a surprise. I foresee our local 3A (4A) districts to be something like this: Division I Bridge City Silsbee WO-S Huffman Splendora Cleveland Jasper Division II Hamshire-Fannett Hardin-Jefferson Orangefield Liberty Tarkington Coldspring Shepherd I expect Buna to drop down a classification

Reports are that Class 3A supts have voted to split districts into Division I and Division II like 1A and 2A football districts are currently starting in 2014 with next realignment. Really do not like this decision.

Schools can have early release for whatever reason as long as the school completes their required school days for school calendar year. bobby, you are reaching. ::)

Yates is in 3A because their enrollment numbers put them there. Just that simple. I do know that HISD decided to not let their schools opt up a classification like they have been doing the last several years. But Yates admins actually thought their numbers would still keep them 4A and that is why they did not check the box to opt up.  It is what it is. I fully expect Yates to be back to 4A next realignment.

Students will be getting out of school at 1pm Tuesday. This will allow students, staff, and admins time to travel to Huntsville for 6pm game against Yates. I did hear there may be some buses for Tiger fans to travel on but have not received confirmation on this yet.
