I believe that coaches well at least bouttee ran zone to help his players out with fatigue, that way most of their energy could be used on the offensive side of the ball instead of on defense. Just my theory
I disagree. If you look at the scores of the games Boutte coached in, you would see that for the most part the games were low scoring games. Andre stressed defense more than offense.
AAW, the Gene Isabell 643 speaks of is Sr....he was principal at hj hs when Gene Jr. played basketball and graduated from there. He is also correct of the baseball field located on the school grounds....i believe back in the 80's they brought in some fill dirt to put on the base paths to level the ground....it was full of pebble rock....great to play on!
I am aware of Gene Sr. and of the field behind the school (played league softball on it in my days). I just thought he was talking about the field that the HJ baseball team had been playing on for many years now.
Do players who play for Jim Boeheim not have the talent level to play man defense? They absolutely COULD play man, but they don't bc of his 'system'. Seems to be working pretty well for him. ;)
I thought we were talking about high school basketball. Being able to recruit to a big time DI school like Syracuse will bring in loads of talent that can play any style. That is not the case with small high schools.

I think it's talent level that determines, but I am no coach. ;) I have seen several local 1A and 2A schools over the years with same coach play a zone for a couple of years then play predominantly man a few years because he had the players to do so. When you get into higher classifications, you can play a system because the level of talent is pretty constant but can afford to play man because of the numbers. But, I have seen smaller schools stick with a system and be successful.
