  1. It should be a good game then, shouldn't it?

I would honestly be surprised if this is not a good game no matter which side prevails.

Both have plenty of talent. Both have playoff experience and have played in big games. I think the interesting matchup to watch won't necessarily be Reshod vs Jmike or anything like that, but actually what does each's 3rd and 4th options do?

Shod has Kirkland and Duffy. Jmike has Jeremy and Tyrae. Can DeMarie (sp.) consistently make plays? Ty? Can watts or Rodgers or Davis make the plays they've shown themselves capable of making?
  2. WS 32

    SA 28

#3 Smith I believe, is more explosive than Williams. WS has speed, #14 may not look like much but he is a good player on both sides of the ball.

SA has a little bit of speed too. Roberts at QB is the real deal. Jenkins isn't a speed burner at RB but he is consistent and physical.  In the passing game there are 7 WRs with a catch, and 4 of those are averaging over 15 yards a catch.

This game is going to boil down to defense.  At some point, no matter what the offenses are doing a Defense is going to get a stop, whether it be by turnover or whatever.  That could be the difference in the ball game.  SA has been very opportunistic to this point on defense, if that trend continues they could win it for SA.

  3. Come on man, you're talking apples and oranges. Of course HD wants no part of that district. First off, all those schools have three times the enrollment that HD has and they're two classifications higher. So yes, HD would get blown out by WOS and HJ and beat bad by Orangefield and HF. But what's Liberty's excuse? If HD was in that district we'd compete just as good as the Panthers, which is not at all. Just like Liberty, HD would finish last place and be the ONE team in the district that won't go to the playoffs. On the other hand I'm not even sure if Liberty could beat HD, Lovelady, or Anderson-Shiro, and I'd bet money on Centerville putting a beat down on the Panthers. And that's not even talking about who Liberty might face early in the playoffs if they were in HD's district......as I promise Liberty wants no piece of Alto.

You've made some decent posts on here before but this wasn't one if em. HD has had a cupcake schedule this year and they haven't proven a lot. WS will be a big step up in competition and then the district is arguably the toughest in the region. If HD secures a playoff spot this year they will most likely see Kerens or Cayuga and it will be a good matchup. No Alto, SA, Mart, etc in the first round means that HD has a great chance of winning if the get in.

The only thing I disagree with is the toughest district part. 2nd toughest without a doubt...but district 10 could be a blood bath.
  4. San Augustine ran 61 plays and had 612 yards of offense.  Left 2 tds on the field.  And pulled starting qb and rb and 2 wrs after the 1st drive of the 2nd half when it was 50-0.

Starting offense had 8 possesions and scored on 6 of them.  Dropped a TD pass on 1 possession, and had a "fumble" (very bad officiating but oh well) on the 2 going in on the other.

  5. Jmike at QB had a great game
All the running backs were good and Jeremy was just punishing folks on his runs.
Sophomore WR Keonte Watts had a breakout game. 2 Big time receiving touchdowns. Probably had 150 receiving yards easily.
Freshman quay handy had a special teams TD.
And the defense just dominated. Hemphill had maybe 2-3 first downs in the first half. I can remember atleast 2 ints. Possibly more. Just a domination of an opponent in all 3 phases.
  6. So back to the game discussion, who wins and why. SA must not be too confident heading into this one. Don't tell me they're afraid of the Big Bad Hornet!!

Where do you get that idea? I doubt anyone in SA is afraid of a team with their wins over Hull-Daisetta, Burkeville and West Hardin.

In the 3 games with Jmike at QB (3A Garrison, Private Dallas Episcopal and 2A Groveton), the offense is averaging over 400 yards.  Against the 2 opponents close to our school size (Groveton and Hemphill) the defense has given up less than 200 yards a game.

Is hemphill improved? It would appear so.  Are they capable of beating San Augustine if SA doesn't come to play? Absolutely.  If SA brings their A game and Hemphill brings their A game, does hemphill win? I don't believe so.  Too many different ways for SA to move the ball and their athleticism should provide some opportunities for big plays against the Hornets.

  7. I think SA does beat HH this week as well. Those kids definitely play hard though and there's no quit in them. It's a 180 from the last cople years for Hemphill. You can't question SA's schedule up to this point, ranking right up there with Alto and Centerville for toughest 2A schedule in SE/E TX.

Pre-season, HD's district schedule looked to be pretty balanced as the consensus was that CV was top dog (by a mile) and the Groveton and HD were gonna duke it out for second place. We catch Groveton away and WH at home to start district. Looks like Groveton isn't on par with the rest of the district, but I never count the Indians out, they just know how to win. Next we go to Andersen-Shiro which will be a tough game, followed up by away at Centerville. Finish the season off at home against Lovelady which I think could be the battle for second place.

I just told HD55 the other day though that I don't think our district goes chalk. CV will be favored in every game and should win-out. But I have a sneaking suspiscion that HD, AS, and LL could all beat each other to create a three way tie for second.... and with three teams going to the playoffs, someone gets left out. We're weeks away from seeing, and any of those three teams could distance themselves from the others but who knows who it'll be. Groveton may turn things around and be in the hunt as well. CV has a bad night and maybe LL or AS knocks them off, as CV plays away against both of those teams. Should be very interesting. Not sure if it'll be as highly ranked and competitive as the Alto, WS, SA, SV district of the past two seasons, but it definitely has some depth and uncertainty.

Good set up for y'all. Should be 2-0 going into last 3 where ya need to be. Groveton is weak. If it doesn't downpour the entire first quarter SA might win that one scoring 70. Seen west Hardin and they aren't very good either.
  8. I agree, we beat WS and we should be in the rankings, until then, no true need to complain.

I also agree with you on stronger schedule. HD made this schedule with the expectation that we would be WAY DOWN this year based off graduating a ton of experience and key players. We normally have a tougher pre-district schedule, but I think with this young group winning some games and building confidence may be the best thing for them. And West Sabine right before district to get adjusted to what kind of speed we could expect in district/playoffs.

You think SA handles Hemphill pretty easy this week?

I agree. I know y'all take a lot of junk from everyone but I think HD can be very competitive in the new district and that's all you can ask for. Confidence can do wonders for a bunch and a win over West Sabine would do wonders for y'all! How does y'all's district schedule set up?

Honestly, I think SA is the better ball club. Should've been up 3-4 scores on Garrison at halftime in week 1. Went toe to toe with 4A (but not good) Splendora for almost 3 qtrs without our starting QB. Overcame a shaky start (28-0 6 mins in) to plays well against a very good Dallas Episcopal. And just dominated Groveton worse than that score indicated. I would think if SA plays to somewhere close to their potential then they should be just fine. Don't think Hemphill matches up well with our kids. We've got some sneaky good athletes that don't get alto of credit and our young kids (play 7 freshmen or sophomores on O) are starting to come into their own.
  9. Lots of talk last week about this game but it's been quiet.

We'll see where both teams stand. District mate West Sabine took down Hemphill by 9. Can SA send a message and put it on Hemphill? Can Hemphill show that they have a shot at the playoffs? (SA lost by 4 to Garrison in week 1 and had several opportunities to beat them)
  10. HD has 4 of the top 20 teams in the state in their last 6 games. So much for the old cupcake sked

It took realignment to get 3 of those...

I kid I kid...schedule west Sabine is a step in the right direction.

A problem that someone like HD faces is location. All the schools your size in a reasonable driving distance are in your district, so you either have to make a trek or play up or down a class. And it's no guarantee that the bigger schools want to play.

SA is in the same boat. When Tenaha won't play you because they said they'd rather lose to someone further away compared to someone where everyone knows everyone you are up a creek. I've heard from reliable folks that the only 2A within 2 hrs of SA to say yes was Groveton...and that head coach left. Also know that several 3As didn't want any part of it. And of course none of the smaller 2As did (see Tenaha and Timpson dropping late, folks like Mt E and Evadale saying no). That's why we wound up playing Splendora and Dallas Episcopal.
  11. I understand your commentary and reasoning, however, is strength of schedule (so far) totally discounted? Look at Hemphill. 3-1, but the wins were vs. H-D, W-H, and Burkeville, and they lost to 2A WS. Newton is 1-2, but played three much larger schools. I guess Hemphill beating a tiny Burkeville outweighs a narrow loss of Newtons to 4A Henderson?

BTW Newton would put 50 on Tarkington.

I've made this argument more than once!
