  1. SA's young team is truly young in every sense of the word. 4 every game starters are freshman and a 5th starts depending on who pitches. The next kid off the bench is also a freshman. 1 freshman starts on the bump consistently. Of those 5 freshman who start...only 1 played more than local league last year. 2 of those freshman did not play at all. Baseball is just not at the forefront for kids in SA and in HS they pretty much only play from February to April and maybe 1 or 2 will pick their glove back up between April and February. For SA it is a blessing and a problem all at the same time. The kids are pretty talented. But they are having to learn on the fly. They are the best option to be out there, but it is a whole new speed and type of game to them. They can't get away with the same baserunning techniques etc that they might have done in Pony League. The pitching is obviously a big step up. And then simply the pressure to perform in a district ball game. Twice SA has taken the lead into the 7th inning in district games...and twice they've not been able to hold it. In both cases a ball never left the infield. A combination of walks and errors on routine plays has done them in. Part of it is young kids in pressure situations and older kids who are learning what it takes to be successful in baseball. SA has struggled in the past and even the older kids are having to learn how to play baseball successfully in a district pressure situation. SA could easily be 5-2 right now (3-4 actually) which hasn't been done in probably a decade in SA and its just something completely new for these kids and add in that half the kids on the field are playing high school ball for the first time and you can see why some things happen.

  2. Ouch. That's gotta sting. Two years ago in Colmesneil I saw WS blow not one but TWO ten run leads, the last of which was an 11 run seventh inning in which Colmesneil won 24-23. It hurts to lose like that but it sounds like y'all are playing hard and getting better each game.

I think they had 2 maybe 3 hits the entire game. We had runners in scoring position every inning and made some boneheaded running mistakes as well. Our kids are YOUNG and it shows at times. We start 4 freshmen, sometimes 5. And sometimes I think that rubs off on the older kids that we do have. With the exception of you guys we've been in every game. Were up 2 going into the 7th against Chester and walked in 4 runs with them never putting the ball in play. Had a a lead on Colmesneil through 4 innings. And then last night we lose a 3 run lead in the 7th and a ball never leaves the infield.

  3. The word is that his contact was not renewed because he would not fully support the basketball program. Put everything he had in football. Sad to see him go. Heard he was going to PineTree...The high school principals contact was not renewed as well.

That makes no sense. He is at every athletic event that SA participates in at the high school level, and is at every home junior high event. Whoever came up with that concept is false.

Coach Hubbard might have missed 5 total basketball games in the 4 years that he was at SA. He ran the concession stand and worked the table for basketball all at the same time this year. Previous years he just ran the table. The boys program just bought brand new sets of Jordan Brand uniforms. The girls program got new uniforms 2 years ago. I know of several ADs that don't ever darken the doorway of a gym and coach Hubbard is not one of those.

All you have to do is look at changes made in the school district over the last year or two from the top on down and you'd recognize what happened in SA. If you think the school board is worried about the basketball program then you have a bad grasp of what is going on at SA.
  4. Not many small school posters on here so I thought it'd be easier to talk about both district mates in the same topic.

SA will be the underdog in their matchup. Not many folks outside of SA will give them a chance. If the defense plays well I think it's very possible SA pulls this one out.

Haven't seen Carlisle this year but historically they have struggled with teams like WS. West Sabine will have to play well but they should win this one.
  5. Way to go Wolves!!! Great representation of 10-2A!!!

Don't want to hijack yalls thread but it was a good win! Defense played really well and bowed their neck when it mattered most. Everyone wants to talk about how in physical we are...but teams are leaving games against us a lot more beat up then we are.

Offense did not play well, but that's expected when it was 32 degrees at kickoff and got lower than that. Looked like our managers had a hard time. The cooler froze shut. The water bottles froze up. They had a hard time getting water out it was so cold.
  6. I've never known Harleton to be elite. They always have an average to decent team

They are simply a team that you have to play very good ball against to beat. They don't do anything fancy, but they are VERY fundamentally sound and physical. It was a nice first round win for the wolves, and big for them to come out and play well in poor weather, which they havent done recently.

  7. Thanks. Any info on Groveton? We may play them 2nd rd.

If you played Groveton you would name your score against them. SA played them in the pouring rain and had their way with them. Only thing keeping that score from 50+ differential was rain and waterlogged footballs preventing SA from throwing.

But I agree with the other poster...98% chance its gonna be Carlisle
