Coach Mathews is an excellent motivator. He knows how to fire the kids up and have them ready to play. He explains the battle plan, and they buy into it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But you have to buy into it as a team, or it falls apart. Having 1 player say "this is stupid." is cancerous. Having parents instill in their kid's head "that's stupid." is cancerous.

It's true. One of my favorite things about him..from day one, his motto in the locker room has always been "Do right." ...he genuinely cares for the kids, and what they achieve beyond high school. The kids would go to war for him, because they know they can count on him to do the same. He doesn't just focus on making you a better athlete..but he also focuses on the mental toughness side of life, with making good decisions, giving back to community, and making you a better person in general. It's almost like being coached by Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar, and Lou Holtz combined. I haven't been in that locker room in 16  years. He still greets me when we bump into each other, and asks me how life is going.

I am not questioning his ability as a motivator  or as a moral compass for the kids, its obvious he is very good at both.   My thing is as bulldogpower stated is being stubborn about the type of offense and defense that is run and not being open to changing or just modifying it.  We see it every two years, the teams that come into the district after realignment have some issues with it until they get used to it, but the teams such as Ned, PNG, Central that have seen it every year for the last 15 or so usually don't have as much trouble defending it.  The few exceptions have been the Quirante years and maybe one or two other years in the past.

It is hard to fire the guy you love, and the guy the kids love.

After 24.5 pages...my eyes hurt. But also a little bit of my soul too. I miss the unity we felt after Harvey. This is a game, guys. For a few months out of the year, adults sink to unbelievable levels looking for one-upsmanship and bragging rights that they literally have no hand in earning. Judging entire communities based on prep level football games? "You serious, Clark?" I forgot how old I was when I grew up.
Curiously though..We used to bring a laptop in the pressbox when we did live updates, and I wrote game previews/reviews on vidorpirates.com (RIP to that site..loved contributing to it) Guess it was no big deal since we were "Press?"

Cool stories, guys. They all get a thumbs up. This is why we play the game. I think Vidor drops another hard fought contest, but I also think it's going to be closer than you think.

I think my original post has been misunderstood. I never said or implied that Nederland has been lucky. I just looked at what they have done against the opponents they have faced, and compared it to what Vidor has done. Nederland is a good team. No one has argued otherwise.

I never said the point averages in past games were going to determine who wins in the next game. You're right -- In the end, the only thing that matters is who wins the game. Until then, it doesn't hurt to look at different stats showing the different teams' strengths and weaknesses, particularly when it was a Nederland fan that brought it up. A Nederland fan said, "Look how many points we are scoring" (paraphrased) as evidence of how many points Nederland will put up against Vidor, and I offered some perspective as to why the data is skewed and areas where Vidor may not be as weak as their record looks. So, to the extent that the past performance is indicative of future performance, that "crap" does matter, and it may end up mattering so much that Nederland loses this week. Nederland is not invincible. Vidor has been close to HUGE wins this season. They just might pull one off this week. I certainly hope they do.

I'm pretty sure its just us fans on here talking about the fight song. I doubt the players are focusing on it..lol
And all we can do is run our mouths, nothing we can do about the defense.

There’s a sandwhich shop called Woogies (on right hand side of Main just passed Burger King).  There’s a Best Food thread in the Locker Room and one of our posters said the sandwiches there surpass anything found in Austin.

Don't sleep on Santa Fe.. I did, and boy was I wrong. Sitting there like Rocky in his first match with Clubber Lang. Come out swinging, next thing you know you're knocked out and your trainer dies. (2nd part didn't happen in the Vidor game though)

But seriously. Santa Fe was impressive. The offensive playcalling was well executed. Their receivers don't drop a lot of passes. QB can sling it, or run. and their defense is speedy and decent sized.
Shug has a clutch ability, so you never want to rule out the purple Indians.
I'll pick PNG...just because they play Cherokee louder than Santa Fe does.
If we all have a personal hell awaiting us...I think a glimpse of mine would be in PNG's stadium this Friday. 3 hours of a continuous Cherokee loop. Better change my ways.

This will sound like the most Vidor thing ever...but there is an actual restaurant inside Vidor Walmart. Seats maybe 20 people. Cajun Works. It is..amazing. Brave the wilderness that is Vidor Walmart and try it. Menu is pretty simple, but that's not a bad thing. Food is fantastic.

Edit - Boneyard beat me to it!! See...we are in agreement

Splitting hairs on that call. To a Vidorian's ear, I couldn't tell it THAT far apart. But to you folks across the pond, that enter the world with it playing in the nursery..I'll take your word for it.  Cherokee, Cherokee Lite, whatever you want to call it...it's Cherokee to me. Forgive my stubbornness, I just don't like being wrong. Probably get that from my paternal grandmother..who is from Port Neches.

    Looking at records, Nederland.
Looking at Vidor's uncanny ability to play the spoiler that beats the district leader, and lose to the middle of the road teams.. Vidor.

I honestly don't know who to go with. Probably Nederland. Always will love my Pirates, win or lose. But this is one of those years they just keep coming up short in hard played games. Like the jinx of the bad news bears or something.

Santa Fe has some size and speed. Nobody to sleep on. They run hard. They pass a lot. They're tough to bring down. They will fit in well in this district. Nobody's whipping child that's for sure. Good game, Indians.
