  1. Off topic - as I'm not a resident and couldn't have a valid opinion on topic even if i wanted to. I'm just shocked Coach LeFort's son is already a senior?! Well that makes me feel pretty old now, thanks. Coach Lefort in his early coaching days at Vidor helped shape me into the man I am today. He wasn't even my position coach, but he always had time to talk when I needed him. Good man. Will always have positive things to say about him.
  2. The ol Fullback Wrap-Around Draw. Dewayne also had incredible balance. He bounced off at least 3 defenders that play. He was also the punter, and when the snap went over his head deep in our own territory, he had the foresight to kick it out of the back of the endzone, giving Ned the safety as opposed to falling on it and giving them 1st and a really short field, or worse, a scoop and score.
  3. He was a multi-threat. Good vision too. And great awareness. When he was primarily defense, he had a few multi-pick games. Probably finished 2002 with 7 or 8 picks. -- and he blocked 2 field goals off the edge in 2001. 1 against Nederland when we beat them 10-8 ...that was a chip shot and would have won the game for them.. i only remember it because it was the first time we beat them in like 3 decades. And also it was the first game after the 9/11 attacks, and both stands passed around a very large american flag like it was crowd surfing. I can't remember the other block..but it was also a game winner i believe.
  4. not trying to sleight my friend, but i honestly dont remember him being as fast as that reel made him out to be..but i guess tape dont lie lol. he was powerful, and had insane balance...and apparently he was fast fast too, instead of just fast. haha!
  5. i do not remember it specifically, but i did manage to catch a few games in those years. I thought Andy was a solid threat at QB. He had the wheels to take off and burn. Seemed to be pretty balanced attack though. I found this highlight reel on youtube. I see wishbone, i formation, and veer for sure. Andy seemed to target #5 Perry a lot, as he was a pretty good receiver in his own right. [Hidden Content]
  6. That was when Rick Culbert was the qb, yep. He was backup qb the year before but mainly played defense and he was darn good at that too. Every so often he'd be on offense for receiver. Great athlete. Dangerous return man. Not ideal for West coast offense. I can only believe that west coast was implemented due to the 7 on 7 success of that group. I would have loved to have this offense with that group. Not saying they had better athletes but it would have been interesting. And the defense from 00-02 ... just game changing.
  7. If I remember correctly the 2003 vidor squad went 2-8 with 6 of those 8 being from 13pts. That was rough. Also didn't help we took a team that ran the option all of their lives and for 1 year we switch to west coast. The vidor qb was the 2nd fastest kid in the district behind chopper williams at central. Option could have been deadly. But..such is life. Now as far as the game last night goes - just wow. That was nice. Sidenote - whomever controls that horn for Ltown... honking it while the raider receiver is on his breakaway td.. wait for him to be in the endzone before you fire it up. I honestly thought Lumberton had a better balanced team. Solid team! Real good team even! It felt like one of those games where the opponents were difficult enough on their own, and combined with the td being called back and the halftime clock fiasco... I thought it would just be too much for vidor to overcome. Nothing seemed to go their way. And when things don't go your way, the opponents seems too hard to keep up with... thats usually when kids lose composure and start taking personal fouls. But they didn't. Proud of you, pirates ☠
  8. i had no idea! well forgive my misinformation that i posted so assuredly on that. I really thought Coach Burks has been the DC all these years. Whoooops
  9. Coach Hatch indeed. Matt Maida seemed to have 2 or 3 - 3 pick games. At least 1 for sure. Rick Culbert also had a 3 pick game and finished the season with a significant amount. Matt is the one you're referring too. If he didn't lead the state in picks, he was either tied for first, or missed being tied for first by 1. Want to say he finished the year with 9 or 10 picks. Crazy when you consider he's like 5'7. He did get an all state honorable mention. So did Keith Ingle at DE. That defense was stout. I want to say they finished in the 2002 4A defensive state rankings in 4th, allowing just over 160 yards per game. And that was averaged in with having 2 really atrocious games allowing near 300 if i remember correctly. I believe Coach Burks is the current DC, and he was the DL/DE coach during this time. He knows this game very well. If you had to handpick anyone to take Coach Hatch's place, it would be Coach Burks...and conveniently enough, he was already there.
  10. Silsbee looks quick though. Good looking squad. Not suggesting otherwise. Vidor definitely making it easier for them though with these blunders.
  11. Silsbee is doing what they're supposed do but definitely are not dominating. Vidor could be going tit for tat if they quit being their own worst enemy tonight.
  12. Nice run! Sad to see that personal foul from Silsbee. Frustration got the better of that young man.
  13. Pirates should find some motivation that they are in the game if they eliminate the silly mistakes. Play smart and this game is toe to toe.
  14. Pirates seem to be deflated quick! All momentum gained gone in a flash. Persevere. Overcome. That was a garbage call on that offensive interference but ya gotta roll with it.
  15. I remember that 2003 game. Vidor's Rick Culbert scored all 4 touchdowns, one of them was a kickoff return. It was one of Vidor's only 2 wins that year if i remember correctly. Sadly, it was a pretty talented team that played together since junior high with an incredible overall record together. It was the season that Vidor did the experiment with the west coast offense. And they had a very talented 7 on 7 group, it just didn't pan out the way we hoped it would on the field.
  16. I'm picking Nederland. I didn't see either team play. Well I did see Ned. vs. Vidor for 1 quarter, but left shortly after arriving..darn toddlers can't hang. Nederland's play calling looked pretty creative but they didn't execute it. Apparently they started executing after I left. I'm mainly picking Nederland because out of the Big Ned and Wampum burgers at Fast Freddies..I like the Big Ned more.
  17. you can tell me. I promise I wont tell. But if I do, I'll make that person promise not to tell. This is how it begins haha
  18. Depth in general seems to be problematic in Vidor. Their athletic (football specifically) enrollment numbers aren't anywhere near the level of other schools. Seems like the sidelines have less and less bodies on them every year. And I don't know if kids are losing interest, or if parents push for other sports with all the revelations of CTE. For fielding such a small amount of players, it's ashamed their school enrollment numbers keep them aligned where they are.
  19. I agree with you. I'm not married to this offense. It pains me to watch the same play. I remember when I first saw it, it was crazy. Seems like each back was picking up 6 or 7 yards per carry. It went inside, it went outside, it would be a QB sweep... it was a lot of misdirection. Doesn't seem to be the case this year. Every run seems to be inside. Don't know if it's because we don't have the speed to turn the corner or what.
  20. It's true. One of my favorite things about him..from day one, his motto in the locker room has always been "Do right." ...he genuinely cares for the kids, and what they achieve beyond high school. The kids would go to war for him, because they know they can count on him to do the same. He doesn't just focus on making you a better athlete..but he also focuses on the mental toughness side of life, with making good decisions, giving back to community, and making you a better person in general. It's almost like being coached by Tony Robbins, Zig Ziglar, and Lou Holtz combined. I haven't been in that locker room in 16 years. He still greets me when we bump into each other, and asks me how life is going.
  21. Coach Mathews is an excellent motivator. He knows how to fire the kids up and have them ready to play. He explains the battle plan, and they buy into it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. But you have to buy into it as a team, or it falls apart. Having 1 player say "this is stupid." is cancerous. Having parents instill in their kid's head "that's stupid." is cancerous.
  22. if that's from the 99 season...that was an incredible game. Wasn't WO-S ranked #1 at the time?
  23. that 2003 squad had talent...unfortunately they didn't have luck. they lost 5 games by a combined 13 points I believe. with a break here and there, that could've been a 7-3 season. that was when Coach Rice took over as OC for one season and brought in an west coast offense. I will always back the Pirates, but that confused me. We had been an option/wishbone team for a while, and had the speedy Culbert to lead it with...and when he finally took the reigns at QB..they brought in the west coast scheme. I would love to see some variation, but I do love a good power run game..if you have the horses to do it.
  24. After 24.5 pages...my eyes hurt. But also a little bit of my soul too. I miss the unity we felt after Harvey. This is a game, guys. For a few months out of the year, adults sink to unbelievable levels looking for one-upsmanship and bragging rights that they literally have no hand in earning. Judging entire communities based on prep level football games? "You serious, Clark?" I forgot how old I was when I grew up. Curiously though..We used to bring a laptop in the pressbox when we did live updates, and I wrote game previews/reviews on vidorpirates.com (RIP to that site..loved contributing to it) Guess it was no big deal since we were "Press?"
  25. Cool stories, guys. They all get a thumbs up. This is why we play the game. I think Vidor drops another hard fought contest, but I also think it's going to be closer than you think.
