James Brown was a special talent. The other guys mentioned were solid also, but Brown had some magic play making abilities throwing & running the ball.
You obviously never witnessed what Ambres did on the field. Brown was a great HS & College QB, however Ambres was equally as Talented if not more, he chose MLB over Texas A&M football so we never got to see him in college...

The very first Head coach at West Brook was Alex Durley!
Well obviously and we know why, HE WAS THE BEST FOR THE JOB, and at that "TIME" HE WAS THE BEST COACH no matter what ethnic or race who could handle that situation and trust me if you knew how many people didn't want for him to have the job because of times then. guess I should have stated in last few decades!!

Just hire the BEST coach that is all that matters.
gotcha, well I said in the another post that at this point it doesnt matter who they hire or what his background is. Football has to be a priority DISTRICT WIDE and that means providing that coach with the resources and ability to structure the program to as needed. Coaches/Kids in athletic periods, competitive stipends, etc..

Beaumont, Texas has and has had some of the best high school talent in the state. Getting the right person to led them is the key! ( and it shouldn't what color they are). There it is I said that. Give the student/athletes the best chance to win.
I think you need to elaborate, color wasn't the issue with the West Brook hire like it has been for years. West Brook has never HIRE and African American Coach...

What Izzy is saying from a coaches point which has to be respected since he has both played and coached at a level higher than most of the people trying to discredit him is simply this.. 6A programs especially a program which will see not only the best in HOUSTON AREA but the STATE. NORTH SHORE, ATASCACITA, CE KING (who knocked off a perennial top ten school as of recently) not too mention SUMMER CREEK. Gains nothing in regards to preparing for DISTRICT PLAY by playing down a CONFERENCE. Its like an SEC team playing LAMAR UNIVERSITY in order to prepare for GEORGIA, BAMA, LSU. 5A programs lack the O/LINE and D/LINE players that majority of your 6A schools will feature especially those which are in that Districts. SUMMER CREEK AND ATASCOCITA ALONE will feature at least two Power 5 linemen. When is the last time PNG has had those type of players in the trenches.. They are the norms in that district.. Yes PNG will be disciplined and are very well coached but nothing can prepare you for 6’5 300 every district game but actually facing it!!!

No matter who’s the coach, NO COACH is being successful in BISD under its current condition. Athletics need a whole revamp
IZZY is right and its not about coaching or athletes at this point in BISD. Both schools have more than enough athletes to at least compete, and when I say compete I saying w/ 5A programs SMDH... The infrastructure for FOOTBALL is HORRIBLE. You can't compete at the 6A level when you don't have all of your COACHES/ATHLETES in the athletic period. Your athletes are put into BEHIND the 8ball when the playing field is not level. 6A OC/DC coordinators should not teach full loads of classes and only coach after school. Athletes cannot compete when the only time they are coached is after school. UIL and the state of TEXAS has allowed sport specific athletic classes (PE/ Athletic Periods) and when some schools take advantage and others don't it shows on the field. Also financially (the stipends in BISD) are not comparable to any of other 6A programs in the state so bringing in quality coaches/ or keeping coaches in a small town compared to LARGER DISTRICTS is hurting no only FB but all sports.. Im sorry but Basketball has a total of less than 50 players in a program. A quality FB program will have 100-120 so make it make since where BISD is putting their attention when it comes Athletics....

Don’t be scared now.. you want BISD to have that smoke!!! Go up and talk to that AD!
Yall dont get it, the AD is a basketball guy who didn't coach very long if at all that I can remember. So fighting to put football in a better situation at both schools is not at the top of the list "maybe not even on the list"

Nothing to see here. Run fast and turn left, jump over anything in the way. That takes a lot of skill (sarcasm). Football should not be compared to track.
Devils Advocate:
Track requires the least amount of coaching and team cohesion. 99% of high school track coaches are all football coaches 1st.
I would have to say this may be the most back wood - none athletic competing - hold my beer "then bust his ARSE" statement I have read in a long time. Track & Field and Elite Track & Field takes more coaching than most sports including football. You show me a coach who can teach proper vertical or horizonal jumps technique and I will also show you a football coach who relies on just given the ball to the best athlete (which takes no coaching). A good track and field coach has to understand how to set up an actual training program for all athletes (runners, jumpers, throwers, distance, sprinters, hurdlers...) When you get into the major metroplex cities outside of SETX most HS only hire non football coaches as their Cross Country / Head Track Coaches, its very rare that you have football coaches as the Head Track/ Cross Country coach.

So here is the run down on who they are and why they are top 5!
Ceasar - Best overall and complete WR (Hands, Routes, Speed)
Brandon Nash - (Hands - Big Play Ability)
(Flap) Franklin - (Speed, Speed, Speed) Big Tall WR who could stretch the field
Errick Lewis - (Best Route Runner, Hands, Release at LOS) C/O 2000 was #1 on depth chart over (Ceasar & Henderson)
Willie Jefferson - (Best Red Zone Threat - Literally unmatched inside the 20) Numbers hurt b/c of offense under Coach Rison
Don't let the schools and offers other guys blind you!! This BMT how many guys never got to the next level but clearly had the talent.. How many had the offers and went as (BUST).

How Do You Define an Elite Coach?
in High School Football
Posted
After the first 2 and 1/2 pages I thought this would end up a waste of a thread and also my time reading. However I'm glad I read through the entire thread and all post before clicking off. As a coach for the past 20 years both in SETX and now in the Greater Houston Area and being very familiar with the WOS Tradition/ Culture and also the last good playoff runs in Ozen's short history, I feel as though I have earned the right to reply to some of the comments in regards to Elite Coaching and also Talent / Culture and how the state of football in SETX has changed in the past few years.
1) IZZY you know I love ya like a son but the (50) 5-2 defense isn't trash, IT worked for years for the Mustangs because CT "Mastered" it along with his staff who many forget never really changed for years. So when you have coaches who have mastered a specific scheme and when I use the term mastered I mean they know how to make all of the adjustments in the scheme for what ever offenses will try to show em. What worked for the past coaching staff will not work for the present staff because its not them, simple as that!! You can't replace almost 30 years of CULTURE and as a community expect the same results.
2) Talent plays just as much a part as Coaching "ELITE" or NOT.. An ELITE Coach I wont say any names but I will say this, he hired ME and gave me my first HS Coaching Job.. "You Cant Win The Kentucky Derby With A Mule" to break it down for you, You Cant Win A UIL STATE Championship Without Talent.
3) Talent can make an average Coach look alot better but who cares, that average coach still has to put that TALENT into position to win, and also manage all of the talent on and off the field, and most importantly LEAD all that TALENT.
4) What it all comes down to is allowing Coaches to set the culture for their programs, communities providing support financially and proudly supporting that team all year long. Championships aren't won in the FALL, they are won in the offseason and summer conditioning.
