Football has gotten a black eye in the media over the past few years with news of abuse by players and increased concerns about head injuries. Many in the media and in our society seem convinced that the game teaches kids to be violence and is driven by parents trying to live out their own dreams of glory at the expense of their son's health.  But those people overlook the real heart of the game and the benefits it provides to the young men who play.
 
My own son's football career came to an end this season when his team lost in the second round of the playoffs.  There were tears on the field and in the crowd when the last seconds ticked off the clock.  As the weeks since have passed I have had time to reflect on my son's experience as a football player and what football has done for him and for other young men across the state and country.
 
My son was not a star player on his team.  In fact, he only got to play in four games, always in "garbage" time at the end of games.  But we celebrated all thirty or so snaps he took, because they represented the payoff of all the hard work and pain he endured to earn them.  Football taught my son so many things -- how to work with others, how to commit to something bigger than yourself, how to support others, how to overcome adversity,  how to accept responsibility for actions that impact others, that success has to be earned, and that the most rewarding things in life are the product of hard work. These are the lessons that football teaches. 
 
When you combine those things with the fact that football encourages young men to be better students and gives them extra incentive for staying in school, I believe that football benefits our society much more than it harms it.  I'm thankful for the game, those who sacrifice their time to coach it, and those coaches who care about the development of the young men under their supervision as men and not just players.

I saw last night on Channel 6 news where we have another local team that might be playing for a state championship.  LCM's Special Olympic flag football team.  Good luck to the team.  Winners in my eyes already.

Dang, why is everyone so touchy?  Craig S asked a question and a couple of you attacked him.  Has the world gone so PC that people can't ask questions?  Or, can we only ask the questions that everyone likes?
 
 There are about 100 players on a college roster.  If you have a backup for each position on offense, defense and special teams that comes out to 66.  That leaves about 1/3 of the roster as stand-arounds.
 
 As an alumni, Craig S was wanting to know where Roe Wilkins will fit, but some of you took it as him bashing the kid.  R-E-L-A-X people and congratulations to Roe!!!

There was no problem bringing the full force of the fed gov down on Cliven Bundy but for some reason can't intervene to save businesses from being destroyed by thugs.

Any of you young guys heard of Ronnie Lott? He made a living and a name for himself with hits like that. It is why some WRs didn't go over the middle. Football is becoming a sissy sport.

What an embarrassment to all Americans! It is like watching Somalia or Iraq civil war only it is happening in our own country. And why are we in the street stealing bottles of liquor and candy bars? Because 1 person was shot while attacking another person. Not because the government rolled over 50 college students with tanks, or rounded up people on the middle of the night and then mass executed them and dumped them in a pit. Nope a thug was shot by a police officer, after robbing a store and pushing down the little clerk who tried to stop him, then charging and attacking the police officer when he confronted him for jay walking, robbery, or something else. So for this we burn down businesses, destroy people's lives, and look like complete fools to the entire world. Then we try to tell other countries don't kill and eat a whale, because you should be civilized like us! The leaders of the black community that have stirred this up or even didn't try to stop it should be embarrased. Everyone wants to be equal and have equal rights, then starting acting like you are not from a third world country and are part of a civilized society and maybe people will see you as equal.

We do a good job of getting sponsors in order to broadcast hundreds of events a year. SETX has done a good job of supporting its local teams to the extent that many fans are able to get onto this site and listen to games that they are unable to attend.

And the reality is there will be a lot more than 50 jobs linked to the pipeline...right of way maintenance, equipment rental companies, the businesses that sell goods to these workers...the list goes on.
 
The bottom line is even if the pipeline provided ZERO jobs, we would be getting oil from our friends to the north rather than from folks that hate us.

I hope the Dems stay on track with their message...obamacare is great...the folks that didn't vote in the midterms are telling us to carry on...veto, veto, veto the Keystone pipeline.

I was on my own and paying my own way at 22 with an education and a career, and had a wife that was doing the same. Now at 31, while neither of us are in a high paying career field, we have a beautiful new house on 13 acres of land, as well as a decent chunk in savings. IT'S REALLY NOT THAT HARD TO DO. I think our country would be well served to better teach young people to manage their money rather than how to qualify for free money.
