MONT BELVIEU — The Barbers Hill Eagles advanced to the championship of the Gulf Coast Classic with a 49-29 win over Goose Creek Memorial Tuesday.

Ian Hamlin and Kody Mourer led the way for the Eagles with 16 points and 11 points, respectively.

The Eagles, who have not won the Gulf Coast Classic since 2005, started the game off with a 14-2 run.

“We just have to put the ball in the basket,†Patriots head coach Jeff Keener said. “We had a lot of looks at the rim and now we just have to finish.

“After we fell down 14-2, I felt we did a good job all game of trying to battle back.â€

The Patriots answered back after falling down going on a 6-1 run to end the first quarter down 15-8.

The Eagles found their shot again though in the second quarter outscoring the Patriots 13-9 and took a 28-17 lead into halftime.

Both teams came out after the break though and played physically in the third quarter which resulted in just 11 points being scored, eight by the Eagles and three by the Patriots.

Eagles head coach Nathan Toon said the Eagles like when it is a physical ball game.

The Eagles outscored the Patriots 13-9 once again in the fourth quarter to cruise to the 49-29 victory.

Both teams head coaches said they felt their players did a good job of playing hard all game.

“I felt we rebounded well,†Eagles head coach Nathan Toon said. “We wanted to get into our offensive sets and I felt we executed well when we did that.â€

Keener felt his players competed well with the Eagles in the game.

“We just have to get better on the defensive glass,†he said. “They just wanted it more on the boards then we did but we did play well defensively.

“We just can’t give up that many offensive rebounds.â€

Toon said the Eagles still have a lot of room for improvement.

“We need to shoot free throws better as well as work on are zone rotations defensively more as well,†he said. “We had a few mental lapses as well so we just need to keep our intensity better.â€

Jerel Zayas, DeMartie Allen and Pedro Alvarez led the way for the Patriots in the loss.

Zayas and Allen each scored six points while Alvarez had five points.

The Patriots followed up their loss to the Eagles with a 58-29 loss to Nederland Tuesday knocking them out of the Gulf Coast Classic.

The Patriots will be back in action Tuesday when they host Dayton at 7:30 p.m.

In other action at the Gulf Coast Classic in the boys’ division, the Sterling Rangers beat Little Cypress-Mauriceville 63-41 Tuesday.

Cartivious Kincade, JyQuis Mitchell and Andre Corley led the way for the Rangers, who improved to 12-5 with the win.

Kincade had 17 points, Mitchell had 16 points with four of his baskets being three pointers and Corley had 11 points.

“I felt we played hard defensively,†Patton said. “Our goal was to come in here and repeat as champions but since our lose we had to refocus ourselves.â€

The Rangers will be back in action today at 10:30 a.m. when they play Spring-Dekaney in the consolation bracket championship game.

Imagine that... Barbers Hill in the finals. Whata tournament.

There is a reason HJ and Kountze do not come to this tourney but if it makes BH feel good about themselves then so be it---of course they could just play their JV

Oh lord someone call the Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaambulance! What has BH done that is sooooo bad that Kounce (Which won it one year) and HJ will not play??? Did they not bow to mighty teams from the East as they enter the Gym ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, well, BH's refs can't compete with Lufkin Hudson's for notoriety-- but they're obvious enough that I'm glad HJ went to EC instead of BH.  Besides, HJ already dispensed with BH, on a neutral court, a few weeks ago, 72-53.  The EC tournament allowed HJ to beat Kelly, Hitchcock, and Newton, teams as good as or better than BH.

Congrats to BH on winning their own tourney.

The only question that I have is why would some BH people run down HJ and Kountze for not playing in your tournament.  They have chosen to play in tournaments.  Both have won it before and they chose to play in other tournaments.  Why give me a good reason!!!!!!!

Also I know that in the Aransas Pass tourney a few weeks ago HJ handed to BH by about 20!!!!!  It would be closer on BH home court, but quit complaining about teams that chose not to play and enjoy your victory of a very good Cleveland team!!!!!!!

It appears to me, if I'm reading the posts correctly, that it is not the BH people complaining about HJ and Kountze not playing in the BH tournament. HJ and Kountze represented themselves well in the past at BH. It is being insinuated by other posters that they didn't play at BH because of the refs.

Ding Ding Ding we have a winner ;D I was wonder where in the heck Lazeek was getting all of the junk he was spouting!!!

Lazeek as you said WHO CARES!!!! BH won their Tournament Nobody is saying they would beat HJ, Kounce or a half a million other teams!!!! All they can say is they won this one and I think after what Cleveland did to Silsbee and the rest they faced that it was a quality win by the Eagles. Oh and Happy New Years ;D ;D ;D hope you get the BH chip of your shoulder for 2009 :-*

was there really a bunch of trouble after the game? how bad was it?

I didn't see any trouble at all after the game.  The Cleveland players and coach all showed good sportsmanship, as did BH.

So where did this comment come from.

Bronco/Cat Fan posted, "Barbers Hill beat Cleveland for the championship. Don't remember the exact score. Cleveland fans were out of hand. Lots of police presence deterred things from getting worse. Cleveland players were even mouthing to BH fans after the game. Poor conduct from Cleveland group." So where did this comment come from.

I heard about, but did not see, one Cleveland fan who was escorted outside by police.  There was a lot of yelling at referees, but not any different than most games home or away, in fact I couldn't hear much from the Cleveland side because the BH fans were chewing out the ref's pretty loudly as well, lol.

From my vantage point, which was behind the Cleveland bench, there were inappropriate comments made by several Cleveland fans at which time the police made their presence known. This went on the whole game. One lady in particular was being laughed at because of the ridiculous comments she was making, at which time she threatened the young man saying she was going to hit him in the head. As the tournament trophy was being presented to the BH team, she loudly repeated three times "yeah, but you'll cheated". A lady from BH sad at that time "Give it a rest" and maybe you"ll need to hold your own tournament if your that unhappy. Several Cleveland men then approached the stands and said "You are not going to curse my wife" and two of the Cleveland players turned around and started jawing to the lady from BH. There was not a curse word uttered by anyone! A policeman then stood in the stands between the men from Cleveland and the group of women from BH. Real classy !
