Memorial shocks Lumberton in 4-3 comeback win
HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

The Port Arthur News

LUMBERTON -- By anyone's standards, Tuesday night has to rank as the most prestigious Golden Triangle soccer victory ever for Port Arthur's Memorial Titans.

Trailing 3-1 in the second half, coach Brian Morgan's Port Arthurans rallied for three goals in the final 25 minutes and notched a rather shocking 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Lumberton at Raider Stadium.

Regarded by the 20-4A pre-season favorite by many area observers and the 20-4A boys defending district champion, Lumberton led 1-0, watched Memorial even the score by half and regained a 3-1 lead early into the second half.

That's when the Titans' senior forward Omar Zepeda turned into into high gear, scoring one header and assisting Ruben Diaz and Armando Rangel with two other goals.

Memorial (1-0) never has claimed such a big win under Morgan, the second-year head coach, who was quick to praise Tuesday night's season-opening opponent.

"We knew Lumberton could play," Morgan said. "They're a real good team. We were kinda down when they got ahead 3-1. It's really big the way we came from behind, but now we need to put together a couple of good practices this week and build on this win."

Junior midfielder Saul Carillo tied the game at 1-1 with 10 minutes left in the opening half. Zepeda's assist to Diaz trimmed Lumberton's lead to 3-2 in the second half. Carillo's corner kick enabled Zepeda to cash in a header and tie the game 3-all with 19 minutes to play. Zepeda passed to Rangel for the go-ahead goal with 16 minutes left.

The Titans will host North Brook next Tuesday night on the PAISD auxiliary field at 7 p.m.
