Karam makes OT goal, rescues Lady Bulldogs

HIGH SCHOOL SOCCER

The Port Arthur News

NEDERLAND -- Sophomore midfielder Stephanie Karam fired a 20-yard shot over Lumberton's goalkeeper as Nederland rallied for a 2-1 overtime victory on Friday night at Bulldog Stadium.

Karam received an assist from Johnna Wagner about 6:30 into the first of two 10-minute overtime periods.

The Lady Bulldogs (15-1 and 12-0), as expected, encountered their season's closest call on their home field. A pair of Lumberton shots bounced off Nederland's goalposts and the winners never led the game during the 80 regulation minutes.

Lumberton (10-4-2 and 8-4) scored 12 minutes into the game off a corner kick and owned a 1-0 halftime advantage. Nederland's Taylor Carlson tied the game at 1-1 in the 18th minute of the second half. Carlson finished off an opportunity which started with Logan Matt's corner kick from the right flank.

Nederland led in shots on goal, 18-7, with both keepers -- Heather Hussey of Nederland and Kelsie Binetti of Lumberton -- collecting four saves apiece.

"We had at least two good looks in the second overtime (to add to the 2-1 lead), but we weren't able to convert them," Nederland coach Julie Johnson said. "It was sketchy. We had a lot of moments where we didn't have the ball control that we needed."

Nederland will visit Central on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Port Neches-Groves girls 5, Hardin-Jefferson 0

SOUR LAKE -- Port Neches-Groves stayed true to the ground game and methodically blanked Hardin-Jefferson 5-0 on Friday night.

Coach Aimee Bates' Lady Indians (14-2 and 11-1) dominated shots on goal, 33-5, and received two goals from Marissa Elam and Melanie Garcia and one from Emily Pacetti.

Michelle Morgan led the assists column with two while Alexis Smithy added one. The goalkeeping chores were divided between Brittney Fruge and Breane Martin for one half apiece. Bates watched her team take a 3-0 halftime advantage.

"I thought we controlled the ball well," the PN-G coach said. "We decided to keep it on the ground and we looked for the switch to change our point of attack."

PN-G has an open date on Tuesday before it hosts Little Cypress-Mauriceville on The Reservation next Friday at 4:30 p.m.
