In season finale... McNeese + Lamar = Full House Lamar + Texas Southern = 3000 fans at most (perhaps even less considering TxSo has drawn under 1000 before, mostly would be Cards fans in Houston) You have to understand, no one will care about Lamar vs Texas Southern. You will get no coverage if that were your final game because they'd bring a piss poor record into the contest. No one would show up. Lamar's fans wouldn't even want to waste time going to Durley Complex (it resembles a YMCA field). With McNeese vs Lamar, you would get a strong crowd on the rivalry alone, as McNeese travels when they are good or bad (more when they are good, of course). It would have some meaning whether it was playoff opportunities, SLC championship or what not. It'd actually be a competitive game. Playing Texas Southern in the season finale does nothing. Each team in the SLC could be the Tigers by atleast 20 and some (UCA, SHSU and McNeese) would probably win by 30+. If Lamar wants to do things right (which you all claims it does), playing Texas Southern in the season finale should be nowhere on that list.

Not much more than you are getting now, especially if TxSo has their typical piss-poor record in that final game. That game would not do anything as the media (the area writer) tends to bounce around when it comes to the PVA&M, TxSo, SHSUs and such. They go with the 'hot hand' and who has the more attractive match-up. If TxSo brings their usual 2-8 or 1-9 record into that game, no coverage.

updated commish standings thanks to tt
TexasTerror replied to lu cards's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Oddly enough, UT-Arlington, a non-football school, dominated the Commish Cup when the "main sports" (football included) were counted double. Two of the top three in the All-Mens standings since 2003-04 have been non-FB schools. It does not take football to be successful in this battle for the cup. For SHSU, the formula was... Consistent production from the usual suspects (which included the T&F components) + One Surprise Sport that we do not expect to produce (last year it was WTennis, the year before it was VB) = Commish Cup -
How does this help recruiting purposes? A probable win. Texas Southern won't travel to Beaumont because their season will always be a wash in the final game. Lamar won't be playing in a meaningful game every year as quite a few of the SLC final weekend games are due to playoff and championship implications... Seems to make little sense.

As I said above, since that was all my post, baseball is the difference-maker. Lamar can not free fall or they will get passed up. Track and field, ask any coach and they can tell you how the standings will fall and almost pick within a place or two of where there team is going to place... -
Nicholls State and Central Arkansas get no penalties. Everyone else gets rung up. The biggest ones of note are Lamar (2 men's basketball), SFA (3.18 football), Texas State-San Marcos (2.95 football) and UT-Arlington (2 women's basketball). Lamar University - Men's Basketball - 2 scholarships McNeese State - Baseball - N/A; Men's Golf - N/A Northwestern State - Men's Track Outdoor - N/A Sam Houston State - Baseball - 0.1; Men's Track Indoor - 1.03 Southeastern La - Men's Basketball - N/A Stephen F Austin - Football - 3.18; Women's Basketball - 1 Texas A&M - Corpus Christi - Baseball - .56 Texas State University - San Marcos - Men's Basketball - N/A; Football - 2.95; Women's Basketball - 1 Texas - Arlington - Baseball - N/A; Women's Basketball - 2 Texas - San Antonio - Baseball - .49; Mens XC - .5; Women's Basketball - 1 Courtesy of the NCAA

Plenty of rivalries in the final weekend. As it stands now, each game has a lot of meaning, especially since UCA vs McNeese is going to feature two of the top SLC teams each year and will have title implications. When Lamar comes in, it has to change unfortunately and poor UCA will get the late season conference bye week...perhaps they can get UAPB in a yearly game to close out their regular season? McNeese vs Lamar SHSU vs Texas St-San Marcos Nicholls vs Southeastern SFA vs Northwestern St UCA vs...

Lamar stadium wish list tops $18 million
TexasTerror replied to UNLV's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
Most reasonable post on here. The big thing, that you and I have discussed before is the college athletic landscape. No telling what the next few years will bring. I'm expecting some major changes -- as it relates to the "moving up process", conference alignment and similar major issues impacting the state of the NCAA's highest level... From what I've gathered, the typical rules for a capital campaign are that you do not publicly announce it until you really got some nice $$$ in your pockets (or at the very least, committed). Does not make much sense to me, does a little perhaps -- but that's how SHSU did it and they were using a firm familiar with capital campaigns. -

ABR, I've seen the donations going to academics. My questions are pertaining to the $30M figure you threw around. Is that a) part of the capital campaign or money that is going specifically towards athletics? It has to be one or the other and you are not being clear nor was your answer. -

UNLV -- you do realize that USA is already a Sun Belt member in all other sports? Their addition to football is going to happen without question and I do not believe the moratorium impacts them at all, even if it is extended. SBC already has 13 schools now, though only 10 will play football by the time USA gets there...you would think like any league, they'd want to get to 12 football schools for purposes of a championship game. Time will tell.. -

That $30M that is being thrown around...is that about the capital campaign you guys are unleashing (where not all the $$$ is going to athletics)? Or is that directly for athletics? What about the capital campaign? I'd assume the capital campaign would not go directly to athletics, unless your institution did not realize the importance of academics. -
Cardinal Stadium renovation plan in works, not final

That's not the point. The point is that he put out the notion that things are not certain that Lamar would start play at the I-AA level. It should be as clear as day... -

I'm not a big Perryn Keys fans by any stretch, but this below remark was not too bright -- not sure how Lamar would be able to begin at any other level. It's as if Perryn just joined the conversation and he's not grasping the concept... "If the Cardinals begin football at the Division I-AA level as expected, they'd have 63 players on scholarship and dozens more as walk-ons." FYI Perryn, it's called Division I FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) nowadays... -

Correct your results, SHSU was assessed a penalty. Seems we tied with LU. -
UNO won the SBC tournament... As far as the SBC and baseball goes, per the weekly release... Consistent top 10 conference in RPI too...

Another new program... ODU has sold just south of 10,000 season tickets for the 2009 season (yep, there's plenty of time left) and there's plenty of excitement. They are planning on having 74 players report to their first camp this fall. Two years as an independent before playing CAA football. Figured you'd want to follow ODU...I know a few of you and I have messaged about them before. [Hidden Content]

Intended OOC SOS 2008 - Not available 2007 - 74 2006 - 84 2005 - 89 2004 - 68 2003 - 70 Lamar has floated within reach of that top 75 number as far as intended OOC strength of schedule goes. Guess the teams were not producing and the SOS went higher.
-
Lamar SOS according to Boyd's World is 182. The Southland Conference as a whole ranks 17th in RPI. Not sure how you are thinking that Lamar will be top 75 in RPI. Scalp'em -- your OOC schedule was not that impressive. Best team was Kansas State. When your best win is 150+ OOC, do not expect to be RPI top 75. Monroe. 62. Kansas State. 74 La-Lafayette. 114. Illinois. 115. Michigan State. 165. And do not worry -- SHSU is not much better by any means. We do have a win over Rice which is very high up there, but not much else impressive.

You will note that I said..."Being at a school that competes for the legitimate NCAA national championship in football -- could not do that at Texas, A&M or at the time, Lamar." Texas does not compete for an NCAA football championship. It's been beaten to death on here, but there is a reason that Appalachian State is the NCAA Division I champion. They do have that pretty NCAA football trophy that looks like all other NCAA trophies sitting in Boone, North Carolina. Can not say the same about Texas... -

a) Better Radio/TV department -- more opportunities for students Being at a school that competes for the legitimate NCAA national championship in football -- could not do that at Texas, A&M or at the time, Lamar. c) The college experience, close enough to come home, but not at home d) Better chance at going to the NCAA basketball tournament (SHSU went in '03 - UH did not go while I was in college) -
You get both... a) trophy bragging rights Could not find picture on web site, but soccer media guide -- page 10. Smallest media guide, figured it'd be easier for you guys to open. Right next to the 'Simply the Best' -- the three cups in a row. [Hidden Content]

Lamar has improved greatly in the track and field components in addition to VB and WBB over the last few years. To me, that's where the success lies for your athletic department. SFA does not have women's golf while you guys do not have softball, which should cancel each other out. I think Lamar has won the Commish Cup this year if they don't fall off the back of the bus in the outdoor track and field components...
