  1. I'm glad you got it straighten out that it was 7 on 7 football. i've covered six man games, eight man games and 11-man games. I've even read about nine man games but never saw one. I love 11-man football. Eight-man is not bad at all.... six man is a game of a different sort.

  2. I noticed last week that there were only 22 or 23 players on the sidelines for Silsbee. That is fine but if you are playing two platoon football then there are really not that many reserves to send into the game so you can't sit your starters as much as many of us think that you should. Who knows there may me more varsity players suited up this week.

  3. I can't really say anything because I never did get around to casting my vote. I wanted to hear the press conferences of the coaches. I really thought the big guy from Levelland was one of the two best players in the first round and Devon McCain was the other. He did not even get on the team. Kortrijk Miles did not do much of anything the first day and he ended up being the MVP.

The big guy from Lamarque was very much a factor. I really wish we had someone like that to come in and play ten to twelve minutes a game for the Tigers when we need a change of pace. He completely took Lincoln out of their game. They could not penetrate the lane and he got more than his share of rebounds.

  4. You always hear about games where the team left it all on the floor. The game between Silsbee and Smithville was just that. Both teams left it all on the floor. One team had better shooters and more bulk. The other was more athletic and probably more aggressive. In the end both teams gave it all. I saw the ref check on one girl. She came into the game hit the floor and came up bawling. Her team was ahead at the time. I don't think either team thought they would lose. It was one of the best girls games I ever witnessed.

  5. I think that this is the first good shooting Tiger team that I have seen in years. Monday they did not shoot free throws well but you have to remember that a majority of the players were playing without even one practice. Conditioning has a lot to do with free throw shooting. My guess is that they will shoot better at the free throw line or Coach Sigler will have them sitting on the bench. In addition to Devon McCain not playing (and he is special) Trajan Harris was more or less hobbling around. That left Maze, Grubbs, Adams and Tanton as who had been in the gym a little.

The refs did a good enough job. They called 63 fouls, 33 against Silsbee and 30 against Westbrook. They probably could have called more from what I saw but they might have blown their insides out if they had called everything that happened. Westbrook reminded me a little of some of our players. They were longer on athletic ability than they were on basketball skills. Wait a few weeks before you judge to harshly. Michael McCain had quarter scores of 2-1-7-7. He seemed to be getting in the rhythm as the game wore on. Others will catch up in a week or two.

  6. I've been watching Silsbee for 25 years. I suspect that back in the 70's some of the teams were much better than this team but there is no way to find out. The offense is outstanding, the defense has a lot of players with good athletic ability but they started the year short on talent. The line opened the season without the services of an all district player who was probably their best defensive player who did not report out this year. The situation was complicated when Heath Jones moved away after three or four games. The defense has shown improvement all year, The defensive group has had a year to improve and they have some of the most gifted athletes on their side of the ball.

  7. It is hard to believe but Jeremy Johnson, a former quarterback at Silsbee High School and Lamar University played quarterback for the University of Charleston last week and completed seven of eight passes for 177 yards and two touchdowns. He suffered one interception. He also carried the ball ten times for 24 yards and one touchdown in a 56-44 win over Notre Dame College. University of Charleston plays in the Mountain East Conference which is a Division II conference like the Lone Star Conference.

  8. I watched Silsbee last year. Sometimes I saw Partain playing quarterback and thought why don't they have Thomas in there and other times I saw Thomas playing and thought why don't they have Partain in there. They were pretty equal. Patron was a better passer and Thomas was the better runner. Unfortunately Silsbee was not very good and neither of them looked very good. Last spring when  Partain was injured and it appeared he would not play this year. Thomas went to work. He lost weight, got stronger and came back ready to play. Now he looks really good. Patron would have improved too if he had been able to play. They are both excellent athletes and excellent young men. I hate to see people speaking negatively about either one of them. Hopefully Partain will get healthy and make his name in baseball or return for a senior season in football. This is Thomas senior season and I for one am hoping he makes the most out of it.

  9. During the live scrimmage I had Hampshire completing one of two passes for 65 yards and rushing the ball eleven times for 39 yards and one touchdown. They had two penalties for 25 yards.

Kountze had one Int. They rushed the ball eleven times for 99 yards and had one penalty for 15 which negated a real long run by Arnold.

He earlier had a 68 yards TD in the controlled part of the scrimmage that was called back for a penalty about 15 yards behind where he was running.

  10. I haven't heard from Tom in a long time. He always wanted to be a journalist. In high school he was on the school newspapers in the days that the only thing I knew about newspapers was that you read them. Here's wishing a class mate from the class of 1970 at Northside High School

    a happy and successful future.

  11. I know both Joubert and Franklin pretty well. Joubert has a goal to sometime be a college basketball coach. Franklin told me the other day that his long term goal is to be a college baseball coach. They are both good guys and both have sacrificed to make the system work in Kountze. I hope that both are able to reach their career goals. I want to compliment them for the excellent job that they have done and wish them the best in the future. Franklin did a great job and if Joubert is selected to be the coach (which I believe he will be) then I think he will do a great job. Kountze has some talented athletes and I believe that the school will have more success in the future.
