  1. I like the move Rice made getting some of those kids on both rosters! Way to go Owls!
  2. True...having a talented O-line is important to protect the QB and skill players and having "championship game experience". BUT...you've gotta have more than an experienced O-line. WO-S posses more weapons than usual, including a talented O-line that you’ll see emerge quickly. Lots of weapons this year for the 2009 'Stangs. DC knows what he's talkin' 'bout this year!
  3. LCM has 15, then you have to add about 3 or 4 guys that are improvements over last years starters that didn't play under Moody. And we got WO-S's coaching staff that was neat too. What do you mean, ¨improvements over last years starters¨? What part of the WO-S coaching staff did you receive that you think is an asset to LC-M football?? Hmmmm???
  4. However, kids now days have access to loads of alternate sports related weight gainers, whey protein drinks, creatine, fat-burners etc. Such over the counter enhancers speed the heart rate up and blood pressure to boot. We could go without water back in-the-day (not by choice) and still practice hard! Not anymore, way toooo many dangerous items out on the market that can cause a kid heath problems.
  5. There will be some size on the WO-S O-line. Average weight across the line 240bs, smallest man hovering around 205lbs. Those guys will be just fine!
  6. I heard from an inside source that the WO-S Superintendent made the choice, but Hooks gave his blessing. Hey, it's always a good thing when a WO-S Alum comes back home!
  7. O-Line will be better than it has been it quite a longtime. There have been some o-line studs in recent years, but there has not been a cohesive unit play as well as the group coming-up. This group of 'Stangs will be mighty fun to watch!
  8. I don't see WO-S dropping down to AA anytime soon. My son’s entire kindergarten class for the 08-09 school year has more than 220 kids alone. It'll be fine.
  9. Both squads are very talented this season, however... I'm taking WO-S by 3. Should be a good one either way!
  10. Every team has holes to fill year in and year out, but unless you have some sort of inside info/magic ball that us other Mustang fans don not have, the holes that need to be filled are few. There's an extremely strong core group of ponies, that will be bigger, stronger, & faster, including an undefeated JV squad that has not lost a game since their Jr. High days. The stable's are quite full for the next several seasons in Mustang Land. Trust me, and I DO have some inside info. ;)GO 'Stangs!
  11. A completely unnecessary poll. It should be removed. Oh, and by the way, it's West Orange-Stark, no S.
  12. We'll be there next weekend supporting you, wherever it might be?! Great job, your neighbors from Orange are behind you!
  13. I gotta say the semifinal game between WO-S and Kerville Tivy on December 12, 1987. Quinton Tezeno stood the RB up the goal line for a goal line stand. Awesome, simply awesome!! The 'Stangs went on the win state that year against Rockwall 17-7 and finished the year undefeated 15-0.
  14. Mustang Deja Vu Second half surge lifts WO-S past Coldspring, 36-8 Van Wade The Orange Leader DEER PARK — It was a case of déjà vu for the West Orange-Stark Mustangs in the first round of the playoffs against the Coldspring Trojans. Leading just 14-8 at intermission, the Mustangs dominated the second half just like a season ago. The third-ranked Mustangs erupted for 22 unanswered second-half points to post a 36-8 victory in the Class 3A Region III Division II bidistrict playoffs at Deer Park’s Clyde Abshier Stadium as senior tailback Quintavious Garrett rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. WO-S (9-0) led last year’s bidistrict playoff game just 12-7 at the half but exploded with 37 points in the second half en route to a 51-14 victory. WO-S’s “Chain Gang†defense held the Trojans to 184 yards and to just 39 in the second half. WO-S put up 328 total yards. Quarterback Ortavious Hypolite completed 6-of-10 passes for 91 yards and rushed 12 times for 73 yards. “The kids played outstanding, especially after the first quarter,†said Mustang head coach Dan Hooks, who picked up career win No. 260. “We controlled the second half just like we did last year. We were able to cut them up with Garrett, who ran all over the place. Hypolite was cool, calm and collected as usual.†Hooks was thrilled with the defensive effort in the second half. “Coach (Cornel) Thompson gave a ‘State of the Union’ address at the half and the kids responded,†Hooks said. “Coldspring, give them credit, is much-improved over last season. Our old defense was just too darn tough after we made some nice adjustments.†WO-S will now face Caldwell (6-3) in the area round of the playoffs next week. “Caldwell, we don’t know much about them but we’ll find out about them pretty darn quick,†said Hooks. “They have to have a good club to be where they’re at. You just take it one week at a time. All we’ve been worried about is Coldspring.†The Mustangs made a statement to start the second half and the Trojans (6-4) had no answer. Leading 14-8 at intermission, the Mustangs took the opening series of the second half and ran eight straight running plays in a 66-yard scoring drive to up their advantage to 22-8. Garrett carried four times for 49 yards and finished it off when he gutted the Trojan defense for a 37-yard touchdown gallop off left tackle. Hypolite then found Roderick Simmons on a two-point conversion pass to make it 22-8 with 8:52 left in the third. Coldspring continued to let the floodgate open. After Trey Franks brought back a punt 26 yards to the Trojan 26 the Mustangs scored again two plays later when Hypolite hit receiver James Haynes on a short pass to the left and the sprinter did the rest, scooting down the left side for a 24-yard touchdown reception, upping the lead to 29-8 with 6:26 still in the third. The Mustangs put the icing on the cake with 0:56 remaining when Garrett busted loose for a 53-yard touchdown gallop through the heart of the Trojan defense. The Trojans struck first blood late in the first period with a perfectly executed five-play, 71-yard scoring march. Trojan quarterback Chad Allen hooked up with receiver Ashton Perry on a 28-yard strike along the left side that went down to the Mustang 43. On the next play tailback Andrew Leigh sprinted around right end on a 38-yard dash that went to the WO-S 5. Three plays later Allen punched it into the end zone on a 1-yard sneak. Coldspring then went for the two-point conversion as fullback James Scott barreled in for the points making it 8-0 with 2:28 left in the first quarter. “It took our kids a little bit to adjust to the speed factor,†said Hooks. “We haven’t seen speed like Coldspring in about four or five weeks. Plus, Coldspring was a physical team. We needed to face a team like that.†The Mustangs bounced back in fine fashion, zipping 60 yards in eight plays. Hypolite hit swift receiver Franks on a 30-yard strike down the right sideline that went to the Trojan 25. The Mustangs drove to the Trojan 13 but eventually faced a fourth-and-11 at the 15. WO-S elected to go for it. Hypolite dropped back quick and found Franks, who ran a beautiful fade route, in the right side of the end zone for a 15-yard scoring toss. The Mustangs elected to go for two to tie it but failed on a Hypolite run attempt as WO-S trailed 8-6 with 11:16 remaining in the half. After a good defensive hold, the Mustangs went ahead with a 10-play, 56-yard scoring drive. Hypolite ran for 23 yards on the jaunt and tailback Garrett carried six times for 25 yards and capped it with a 2-yard blast up the middle. Hypolite darted off the right side for the two-pint conversion, giving the Mustangs a 14-8 edge with 6:10 left in the half. Coldspring outgained the Mustangs 145-127 in the first half. Leigh had seven carries for 61 yards to pace the Trojans. Hypolite completed 5-of-7 passes for 67 yards in the half. Franks hauled down three receptions for 54 yards. 23. Nice statement... The OF kids certainly deserve more than what the coaching staff allowed them to do tonight regarding their performance. How many times can you run the same running play up the middle? WOW... that's a head scratcher there. The OF players didn't stand a chance when you can stack 11 men in the box play after play. It's no wonder the 'Stangs held them to just 40 yards and NO 1st downs. Certainly OF has better talent than what they showed? However, it's kinda difficult to showcase that talent when your OFC only has 2 plays in the play book. Nice... ???
  24. I can remember back in the day, the intimidation factor of opposing teams talking about driving down Newton St. in their Yellow Dawgs, seeing the oversized Horseshoes leading them all the way down to, now Hooks Stadium. Lots of mystique...
  25. That's right. Nice to see the old lucky Horseshoes runnin' down Newton St.
