DannyShapiroBE reacted to CardinalBacker in RIP Blain Padgett
I appreciated the link provided. In fact, I thought Shapiro was particularly tactful by not even addressing the content in his post.... just a link.
I don’t follow local news closely, so it’s doubtful that I would have ever known what happened had it not been for Shapiro’s posting.
It seems like some people don’t like the message and feel like attacking the messenger.
Honestly, if you haven’t talked with your young athlete about EXACTLY what happened to Blain, your missing a good opportunity.

Disagree. By and large we are all simply a product of our choices whether they be good or bad. I don't think simply sharing a link that sheds light on what transpired takes away from the young man..We all make mistakes. Many of us are fortunate to not pay the ultimate price while many others are not. If anything it should serve as a cautionary tale as well as a great opportunity for others to educate themselves and loved ones on the dangers of opioids.

DannyShapiroBE reacted to WOSgrad in Best Athletic Season 2017-18?
I agree. While the basketball championship certainly puts the Tigers up there, the co-championship in football, making the playoffs in baseball and Kalon Barnes' track titles actually clinches things.
My second pick might surprise some....it would be Jasper. The Bulldogs made the state tournament in two different sports (girl's soccer and baseball), along with a football district championship.
And Danny, don't worry, as the all-state baseball teams have been announced, this forum is headed back to the top of the board.

DannyShapiroBE reacted to Alpha Wolf in Playoff home-field for 4A and below
No guarantee that 5A and 6A playoff games will be on Fridays. They could play on Thursdays or Saturdays as well. Everyone should go to this format for the 1st round. Keep it simple. For the 2nd round, it shouldn't be an issue booking a neutral field for playoff games.

I think the UIL might find that they have to go to this.....aside from the Jasper example noted in the article, most of the bigger stadiums that schools 4A and smaller use during bi-district are the 6A and 5A stadiums that are going to be tied up by the rule giving 6A and 5A schools homefield advantage during bi-district.

DannyShapiroBE got a reaction from Boogy1000 in Is Kalon Barnes the greatest athlete to ever come thru SETX?
Since last September, I've experienced these 'wow' moments from Barnes:
- Caught a punt and a kickoff on a bounce (in the same game) and ran them both back for touchdowns)
- Beat a 6'10" center for the opening tip in the state basketball tournament. Barnes is 6'3".
- Played center for said basketball team because he was the most athletic player on a team that includes three future D1 players.
- Left the field in the dust in the 100, while breaking a state record. The 200 was a breeze as well, which is incredible at a state event.
And I know I'm missing some more. He's the best athlete I've seen since being in SETX. I wrote a couple weeks ago about how he could be the area's next Olympian and I still believe that.

So Coach Thomas from Ozen took the boys job in Temple and Coach LeBlanc from Central took the girls job at Temple. They got 2 good young coaches in my opinion. Meanwhile we just sit and wait...

It is like getting a girl a promise ring. Or getting engaged for a four year period before marriage.

Another thing I mentioned - and that you touched on - is that there's no system for educating players and families on the process. Most are going through it for the first time so are naturally naive about the risks.

That's a big problem with college baseball recruiting right now. Once a kid commits, his recruiting process typically shuts down. Usually other coaches won't look too much into a hard freshman or sophomore commit.

DannyShapiroBE reacted to Ty Cobb in Early recruiting popular but risky for young players
Very good information in that article. I wish the NCAA/college's were forced to send this information to every recruit as soon as the recruiting process begins. I see no positive, for the recruit, in early verbal commitments.
