he whole thing about D1 commits is crazy.  The schools with the most commits is ozen and central in the past years and they didn't do anything.

They have had several, but I don't think they have had up to seven players on one team. They normally would have 1-3 guys at a time and that was it. I agree, a few D1 players do not make a team great and make them win, but having (7) of that type of caliber players on one team sure does help.

They would win the championship every year if they got to play the Bob Hope Schools of the blind that Newton beats up on all the time.

Yes. West Brook would win the 3A state championship every single year if they played in it. I don't think anyone would disagree with that. We all know they would wipe the floors, as Newton is doing too. Too bad WB can't do it in their classification. I would like to see them do something good for a change. At least WB is the best team in Beaumont, though.

    That’s not bad.

The problem comes when those bigger schools send in fresh subs and your guys can’t catch a breather. It makes a difference.

The other problem is this. Guys who stand out as linemen in 3a would be kinda ho-hum in the larger classifications.

I’m not talking about crappy, sorry 5A programs. I’m talking decent, playoff quality programs.

I fully expected Newton to pick up an “L” or two through this stretch of non-district. They have not. Nobody is going to argue that WOS or Gilmer are having good years even if you don’t factor in the Newton games, though.

You guys should roll through the 3A playoffs. Enjoy it and stay in your lane.

I agree with you. I just don't consider Vidor, Nederland, PNG, and Beaumont United being in that category and to be above average this season. Neither of those teams are honestly that good THIS SEASON where you could put them above THIS years Newton team. In years past, of course, i'd predict those teams to win. In 2018, I just can't see it. I do agree with you that the larger quality playoff teams would edge Newton, but not the teams here in SETX. That's not a knock to them and I hope all the teams do well around here.

It’s not the D1s that are the weak link. There’s a reason that “D1s” at bigger schools don’t play both ways. They have OPTIONS, which is something that Newton doesn’t have.

I don’t care who your offer is from, if you have to line up as a receiver against a good CB and then turn around and try to cover a fresh D1 receiver series after series, both of those guys are gonna make you look silly in the second half.

Same goes for the lines. Playing both ways works fine against smaller schools. It even works well enough against mediocre big schools.

When you run into a team that has a few decent players like Newton has, AND an abundance of kids that match up well with Newton beyond the skill positions, Newton would lose every time. It’s just the way things work in the real world.

I totally understand where you're coming from and I would agree with you in most cases. Though, Newton has a total of (0) lineman that start both ways and a total of (2) skill guys that start both ways. So...... From 2016 and back, Newton has had several of guys start both ways. In 2018, Newton has 2 guys that start both ways. They have plenty of options this season with extremely talented kids. Next season, we will see several kids start both ways i'm sure.

  4. PNG, Nederland, Vidor and Beaumont United would NOT beat this years Newton team. I believe that West Brook is this only team in SETX that would beat Newton, with PAM in a true battle to beat Newton. People say this because Newton is smaller, but WOS hands out L's to PNG, Nederland and Vidor normally. Well, the truth is, Newton is loaded with top talent this year and the depth behind all of the division 1 players are there. They have (5) big time division one kids, with (2) more about to receive big offers. No other team around has that type of talent on their team at this moment. PNG, Nederland, Vidor and Beaumont United wouldn't come out on top this season, but they probably would in other years. I'll always hold WB ahead of Newton though.

  5. I believe that Crosby will win this game, but WOS will only get better from it. I see them starting out (1-3), which is not bad considering who they have played and how they're somewhat down, then winning out and going 4 to 5 rounds deep! If this team keeps getting better and finds their offense, then they could very well be playing in the title game once again. I just don't think they're there yet to handle a clicking Crosby team. I am rooting for WOS here! Prove me wrong!!!!

  6. I think Woodville wins this one by 2 scores. They are pretty solid and have a very good running game. Though, I do not think Woodville can get past a top 3A team with just their good running game. With their athletes, i think they should spread defenses out a little more at times. Solid, fundamental, athletic 3A teams will knock them out again.

All the talk about WO-S finding a QB needs to take a rest. Please. The sophomore QB we have has tracked nicely upward with his play at every level since 7th grade. This was his second start, in wet and sloppy field conditions, with an all time great Newton team in front of him. That should stop being the measuring stick for this kid. He is right where he needs to be. Have patience and show some better reasoning here, please. He will be fine. I expect improvement from him throughout the season. So should you. Watch and see.

I agree. I think he’s going to be very good. He just may be the guy that tears Newton apart next year, who knows? He played against a team that rushes 5-6 guys every play, has a very talented secondary and the field was a mud pit. After a tough Crosby team, he will start gaining confidence and looking better. The schedule gets a lot easier, so that is a time I believe he will grow and be a different player by playoffs.

No team can maintain forever. I think this tough schedule and going to Crosby twice will benefit orange especially for a state run in 2019. This year Jasper may get will have a hardened west orange team.

Jasper will not beat WOS. Look at who each team has played and will play before they meet up. WOS has a great pre-district and holding their own. Jasper has possibly the worst pre-district and possibly district in 4a. Don’t get me wrong, Jasper is a good team, but don’t let these scores and records fool anyone. WOS would go undefeated with Jasper’s schedule too. WOS is still the better team here.

I think this makes the Silsbee/WOS matchup more intriguing.

Could this be Silsbee’s year to knock off the Mustangs? It looks like they’ve got a decent chance with both offenses sputtering.

Both teams are solid. Both teams have taken losses to solid 5A teams and then Newton, so their records honestly aren’t as bad as they look if you look at the teams they’ve played. I give the edge to WOS. They have a lot of athletes on the field and can stop the run for the most part. Barlow had a lot of yards, but a lot of those came on two big runs.

If it takes 5 D1 bound players and  WOS only completing 4 passes on the night to beat this very young team...WOS has a very bright future...FIND A QB!!!!

It took a good team to beat a good WOS team. Enough with your young stuff. WOS was young last season and had so many new starters, yet, they played for the title. It’s just the fact that Newton is solid and won the game plain and simple. WOS is still very good.

if Jasper keeps playing the way they have been, it won't be long before we see them in these rankings. I'm guessing that we'll have beat WOS before anyone will notice...

Yes, I think Jasper will need to beat a good team before they get real recognition. Jasper is good this year, but their schedule is horrible. Looking back after week 4, Jasper's best opponent will be Lumberton. The other 3 teams that they will play just may have a total of 0 wins combined after week 4. That's not good, not good at all. Good luck beating WOS though. That's the game that will determine if you guys are rank-able or not.

In all honesty, a Newton D1 isn't like a typical D1.  You can tune in and eventually you'll see D1 kids from other schools playing college ball.  It's kinda like Newton kids go into the witness protection program, never to be seen or heard from again.

I've got Newton in this one, regardless.

Well, being that Newton has only sent 3 players to a power 5 school in the last decade really does not give a clear picture to your comment that you continue to state. Roney Elam, the one you always claim that does not play much at A&M, has not lived up to being a caliber college player. He's only started one game against UCLA last season, but hey, he's still there getting playing time here and there and getting a college degree. DJ Dean, started for Arkansas his sophomore and junior year, then battled the injury bug which kept him out of the draft. He was ranked the 4th best CB in the SEC after his Junior year and then only played a couple games after being injured. The other, Kevin Shorter, was commited to UT and never went due his spinal injury. So, it's not like Newton has sent many at all. But, they do have plenty going to power 5 schools now and they will all see playing time really early in their career. I guess that has to happen before you actually shut up about Roney Elam not getting much playing time at A&M. lol.

And I do give credit where credit is due. Newton o/L is better.and brown is no doubt the best WR and best DB that will be on the field. Newton want be able to blitz as much as they do bcz of the 4 wide receiver set they will see.and once CT gets a hold on what ur trying to do offensively. U best believe it will be a couple QTrs Newton will have trouble scoring bcz he is the best in the business.

Newton will still blitz just as much, man. They will run man coverage with your 4 wide receiver set just like they did in 2014 being that Newton had the athletes to do so that year. We couldn't do that in 2015 lol. Newton just didn't have the athletes and you guys were just on a different level. This year though, Newton will run man to man. With WOS not having a great and confident QB, and Newton having really good defensive backs, you better believe they will be rushing the QB all night.

My pride is aside.im keeping it real. I'm very realistic. This kid goes both ways.and he is on all special teams.so his touches are limited.barlow doesn't go both ways.huge difference. Barlow has something that cooper doesnt.and that's stats.so if things are based on that than he is better.once again Cooper is on both sides of the ball.which makes things twice as hard.

I was not basing this off of stats what so ever. I totally understand that Cooper plays both ways and is on the field more than Barlow is. That takes a toll on a player for sure. I am done comparing the two. I just watched Coopers hudl and he is very good and looks to have D1 talent for sure! Is it because his size that he's not getting the recognition that he should? I see that he doesn't have great height and weight that most colleges look for at the RB position. If that's the case, then i feel bad for him because he can definitely play with the top RB's in the state. Barlow has the size being that he's 6'0" and 200lbs. Cooper is listed at 5'9" and 178lbs on his hudl, so i am sure that hurts him.
