I was just about to post on this! Proud of C.Dallas! 7 for 7 and amazing on kickoffs!! It's pretty simple, when a kid wants to get better, believes he can be better, he WILL become better!!!

I'm still enjoying the victory last night. Honestly haven't asked but I'll find out later. Sitting here trying to make myself believe all of this is real. When these boys were very young we knew they were special. As they got to be 9, 10, and 11 the reality of what we thought was right before our eyes. We said back then that they had 2 State Championships in them. Now we've lost a few of those boys. A couple of them moved to Beaumont and actually one is visiting Yale this weekend to play football. The pride and joy that these boys have given me and a lot of other people is just amazing. I didn't mean to go on a rant about the boys but it's just what's on my mind right now. Can you even imagine? Three State appearance in a row. Not to mention a State appearance in baseball. Thanks for the ride fellas!!!!

    Keys to Success:
    1.  Tradition? Hardly.  It helps for a team to have some, but not if the tradition includes losing.   Change to "Winning Tradition"
    2.  Coaching Continuity?  Possibly..  But again... not if there is no success.  If your community/players NEVER or RARELY have to
endure a change in coaching philosophy it is a big advantage.  There are no short learning curves in those programs.
One School...ahem....has 30+ years of coaching philosophy.
    3.  Talented Athletes?  No argument there.  A must, though at the High School Level, one truly gifted athlete gets you a big head start.
Throw in 2, 3, 4, 5 at one time.  Good lord.
    4.  Community Support?  It helps tremendously.  No athlete can resist the roar of the crowd.  Its intoxicating.
I personally believe that when talented athletes, not the gifted ones, stay in their community.
Then encourage acceptance of a philosophy that was there before them, with them and will be there after them, then there can
be no confusion of what is expected from them.   Success.

Note:  There has to be multiple examples of success.   Championship trophies, collegiate players, professional players, etc.
Those success stories have to continue to be part of the community to cement the winning philosophy.

For our area, West Orange-Stark got it right.  Lucky? Maybe, all winning traditions need a little luck here and there.
It doesn't matter.  That program has found what works for their community.  Why change it....

I love when WOS comes to town. It brings out the best in our athletes.    Enjoy their brand of football.
The last three years of WOS football is kinda like the Greek Spartans of old.
You can talk noise, no problem, but you'll probably end up at the bottom of a deep hole or piled up next to the others.

    I'm done. Respect.

I'm not sure how comparable Kennedale and Navarro are athletically.  I've only seen Navarro highlights and highlights do not tell the tale.  However, I did watch the WOS vs Kennedale game in person.  Many of my friends could not go so we talked on the phone at halftime.  WOS was shutting Kennedale out but I told them it would not end in a shutout.  That this was a dang good team.
Both are in their respective divisions semifinal....if Navarro is better than Kennedale, then this will indeed be a dogfight.  Kennedale has a monster at LB/DE that I believe is going to Ohio State.  Against him and that D, WOS still put up 45.
Since this is a message board of opinions.....I think the heavier burden lies on the Navarro defense.  If they contain/slow down the WOS offense, then it allows them to keep running.  If WOS imposes their will offensively, then it will be a track meet that Navarro can't keep pace with.

Strangely enough, Cornel Thompson would not be on that list.  However, I understand (I think) what you are saying with that question.  One of the factors of the success of the Mustang football program has been the continuity of the program from Steve McCarty to Dan Hooks, who was McCarty's right hand man to Thompson, who right hand man to Hooks.  And it does take this sort of continuity to establish a winning program.  This is because as sons and nephews of the original Mustangs know exactly what is expected of them when they show up to run that Mustang Mile and what it takes to earn a silver helmet.
And it is the community support for those standards which allows that continuity to remain.  Believe me there are some...you have seen some of them post here....who wish to take their shots at Coach Thompson.  Every community has their set of village idiots.  And he has not always had the golden touch.  I remember that it took 4 games for Coach Thompson to win his first game at WO-S as head coach and that he insisted on moving out of the spread to the I formation.  Even through all of those the community continued to trust Coach Thompson and believe that his decisions, his words and his action were intended for two purposes, to make the West Orange-Stark Mustangs a stronger football team and to make the individual members of that team better people.  You will never see Cornel Thompson saddled with a derogatory nickname from Mustang fans or you won't see "For Sale" signs in his yard after the next loss, which although I find unlikely, could occur as soon as this weekend.  You won't see people calling Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt or seeking an investigation from Orange County DA John Kimbrough for practices that parents think are "a little too strenous."  You won't because even those who might not care for Coach Thompson respect him in the community.
And of course, you need stellar athletes.  Coach Thompson has acknowledged that himself that you need that. hence the now infamous statement that "You can't win the Kentucky Derby with a mule."  And yes, this band of athletes is special, on both sides of the ball, in the backfield, on the line and in the secondary and many of them have played together since they were 5 years old. They are not only talented, but they are some of the most grounded, hardest working and intelligent young men you will ever want to meet.  They don't need to be prompted by coaches to get work in during the months of January, February or March, they are already doing it on their own.  And guess what, the Mustangs that are coming behind them are preparing the same way.  Will they be able to continue what this class of Mustangs have done even if that run ends this weekend?  The answer to that question we won't know until about this time next year or the next few years after.
But it will be certainly fun to find out and those in the community will be as proud of their effort to do so as they are of these young men who have been taking Mustang fans on this fantastic ride.

Lots of good insightful thoughts on this thread. Many things go in to consistency. Hard to put your finger on one. All have been mentioned. For us, we always had the kids, we just didn't believe. Traylor brought that. Took 3 years to get it turned around. Doing things we never thought we could do. Installing the offense and getting the kids to buy in may have been the biggest challenge. We ran it from the beginning, 7th thru 12th. Don't think they even cared about won/loss records. Took some time, but he built a power. So what I would say to get things going your way, is a strong motivator for a coach, time from the school and fans to build it, and build it from the ground floor. From the littlest kids you can coach. Traylor kept his coaches too. Not many left while he was in charge and he surrounded himself with people who thought just like he did. We are 26-2 since he left. Haven't missed a beat.

my sentiments exactly - the programs in this area with the most success are the ones with the longest tenured staffs -- Wos - Newton - Nederland - money not the key to keeping good coaches - it where they live - its home - when the community stands by em  they will give u a program that everyone is proud of - when the right group comes thru you get to look at the finals - thats not an every year thing - but the support and pride of the whole town and standing up for kids and coaches that is a everyday privilege.

We all know the key for us is 1st and 2nd down. If we can force a 2 and long that's where they'll play into our strength. Me personally IMO, they're not going to play keep away for too long. When we get the ball we will score it and force them to play for behind. They won't play the 'i'm just not trying to get blown out' game, in sure they want to win just as bad as we do. So therefore they're going to use the best effort to score. If we get at least 1 non-offensive touchdown, then I say lights out. Praying for a good safe game and safe travels to both teams. Of course i'm rolling with my Stangs!

I'm not impressed with their win over Cuero.Remember,Giddings played them close and that little 2A school like to beat them. They might get some yards like Liberty and might not but they ain't stopping this offense. They had their state game last week.

And Navarro converted six 4th down opportunities! That's kind of amazing, we can't allow that to happen. They actually only scored three offensive possessions and their longest run was 14 yards but Cuero just couldn't get them off the field. Add in the pick 6 and a kickoff return for a score and that was the difference.

Yea because Navarro best hope is 3 yards and a cloud of dust and go for it on forth down but how long will that last if you're not scoring and wos is making the scoreboard look like a pinball machine u can't  be like liberty and try not to win but  just not try to get blewout   there is no tomorrow so u try to put the ball in the air it's going to be a pick 6, cureo made a lot of mistakes in that game against  them and Navarro had a 4th down catch that the WR bobbled all the way out of bounce and they gave him the catch anyway then on one of cureo drives the center snap the ball way over the qb head badly and I believe the game was tied at that point  is watching  the film saying we can't make those mistake or we might end up in the same boat

I can see the perks of running the wing-t offense. Whenever you go up against a team that has a high octain offense such as WOS I think the Wing-T is an advantage to beat them due to the fact you can keep that offense off the field. But its also challenging to the WOS defense to get Navarro off the field and give the ball to Jack Dallas and company to let them get to work.  Looking for a good game on Friday Night at NRG. an team thats been in this situation the last three years, vs. a team that hasn't will be the edge...
I'll take WOS pulling away late in this one.
