I’d still favor HJ in a matchup with beavers and sneed, but can’t argue that on paper it’s close.  West Brook has improved vastly this year on a solid squad from last year.  That said, the only reason HJ quit beating quality 6A competition is because they had to start district.  Would love to see them play a warmup game before playoffs.  It’s the only real local matchup that makes sense for either team trying to be challenged before the playoffs start

Yes at Montagne Center. That would be a playoff atmosphere certainly

They’ve been better than I thought they were.  I was going off of last season, and the start of this season, where they had a good record, but played a lot of teams in lower classifications to inflate their record.  They’ve played a better schedule this year, while also performing better.  So it wasn’t a typo, but I do admit that I misjudged them.  I still think HJ is the best team in the area, but I’d put WB at #2, where as a couple of months ago I would’ve placed them 4 or 5 probably.

I would give the slight edge to WB based off of recent play (8Ws against 6A competition). Call it a wash with WB splitting with Summer Creek and HJ losing to them. Plus no Ashlon Jackson walking on the court

Did not, but that's not a game the "best team in the area" should be losing by 20.  West Brook isn't a bad team, but they're not that good.  They're coming off a season where they had a nice record, but racked up 10 of their 25 wins against bad teams from 5A, 4A, and even 3A.  HJ was 20 points better than them last year, and I guarantee you they're not 20 points worse than them this year.

You also mentioned WB wasn’t that good… however they are state ranked in the highest classification. Was that a typo as well?

I think we’re far enough into the season with enough results to say that HJ is still clearly better than BH.

HJ is 7-2 with an OT loss to #11 9-0 6A Cinco Ranch, and a 6 point loss to #3 10-1 6A Summer Creek, a state semifinalist last year.

BH is 9-5 with losses to #24 Judson (who HJ beat), West Brook, Cy Ranch, #19 Houston Memorial, and San Antonio Johnson.  All 6A schools, but West Brook is 9-5, Memorial 7-6, and Johnson 5-4.  Memorial beat them by 30.

WB was never 9-5. Please check TABC Rankings they are now 27-3

I posted the following in the WB Summer Creek thread

WB and BU are low on talent lately but even if Beaumont had 1 school, 2 schools, or 3 it wouldn’t make a difference. For the most part, and there are a few exceptions but not many, the successful schools in 5 and 6a are large suburban schools in which the districts have money and the parents too.  The schools have better facilities, coaches, and the parents have money to pay for individual coaching.   For the most part WB and BU are missing both of these two ingredients. It’s sad, but Beaumont ain’t what it used to be and it’s getting much worse.  The schools are dangerously close to being like inner city schools. This isn’t the kids fault and I feel sorry for them because it’s the parents and former administrators that ruined everything.   Maybe they can turn it around but it’s unlikely. A drop to 5a might help but people of all types are leaving BISD and I think that’s what left won’t win many games.

But in basketball this will be a very different conversation

So, Beaumont with a population of 115K with one high school.  I submit as evidence Alief and Plano as ISDs with huge schools and no success in football.  When the UIL works their majic in '24, the 6A cutoff number will rise, which should drop WB and BU to 5A D1.  All the growth is west of the Trinity river

Alief has at least a state finals appearance as they dominated chip ambres 1997 bruins in the dome for the region 3 title. Plano has a couple of ships at least and also state final appearances.

My honest opinion is if you combine the BISD schools - there would be a huge exodus to Lumberton, Nederland and PNG.

Did Kroger get hurt in a scrimmage or something? Why is a 5’7” kid playing? You kind of highlighted why I think Gary Joseph is the best coach in the state. He’s working with way less than guys like Dodge, Samples, Kay or Surratt. Still, Joseph only has one 10-win season and one 11-win season, the other 16 seasons he’s won at least 12 or more games.

As I said defensive mind yes. That offense is outdated which puts him behind tremendously. Look how Todd Dodge exposed them in the semifinals last year

They’re also 1st and 2nd in talent and probably top three in coaching at the 6A level, pretty lethal combination. Only coaches to coach at least 23 of a possible 24 playoff games at the 6A level the past four years are Jon Kay, Reginald Samples and Todd Dodge.

To be clear, I think Gary Joseph is the best coach at the 6A level and the state in general. I think Samples and Kay are top 3 now that Todd Dodge has retired.

I can put coach Joseph as a defensive mind in the top three. Due to their lack of evolution on offense I can put a couple of head coaches ahead of him overall. Just my opinion. They better hope Westlake goes D1 otherwise they won’t beat them with a 5’7” QB who can barely throw 30 yards

I remember Stump would require lifting sessions 2-3 times a week during the season. It definitely helped the team a lot, is Langston gonna do 2-3 or is the issue to where it needs to be 4?

He just said lifting more on the KMBT two-a-days interview when he first got hired last year. I would say at least 3-4 days. Especially if all practices aren’t padded

The starting QB for Lamar is the same Rosenthal kid from last year. It WB has anything on the defensive line they’ll probably be able to get to Rosenthal on a pretty regular basis. He was only 4-11 for 104 passing in last year’s game but he rushed for 140 yards on 15 carries. It just looks like WB struggled in general in the trenches against Lamar last year though. Lamar had 47 rushing attempts for 324 yards and 6 TDs.

That’s just flat out out-muscled. We got bodied basically lol #weightroom

Chuck indicated that there will be more in-season lifting. Which I like. I hope the results from this come to fruition this year

There's no guarantee Jenkins ends up at A&M.

Anyway, he and his receivers should do well. Concerned about the defense though.

Give me the Brook by 3 at the house. Yes Jenkins could end up anywhere. UT, UGA, Lsu etc. A&M was smart with giving him an early offer but I think the offers will continue to pile up for this young man. #BGOE

During the controlled scrimmage West Brook 1's outscored the Nederland 1's 2-0. The Nederland 2's outscored the West Brook 2's, 2-0.

Thomas was picked off a couple of times. Once in the end zone during the controlled portion and once at the one during the live action. West Brook also fumbled inside the twenty as well during the live scrimmage. They'll have to clean that up to compete.

Trosclair looked good in the two "live" quarters. West Brook played a freshman QB in their last drive and ran the ball the entire time for the tying score.

I say "live" because QB's were down if touched.

Now this makes a little more sense. Thank you Mr Elam 🙏🏽

    2nd Half of scrimmage

    Westbrook 2 rushing TD’s

    Nederland 2 passing TD’s

Nederland defense came up with 2 turnovers. A pick at the 1yd line by CB #24 & a fumble recovery at the Ned. 20 yds line

#10 had a better 2nd half at QB, completed several nice passes on a couple of drives for 2 TD passes. A 30 yd TD pass to #6 Caywood & A 5 yd TD pass to #1 Barrow. 2nd half also had kicking game which #16 for Nederland had some nice deep kick offs, punts & made both xtra points

Overall both teams look decent, both need some players to step up on both sides of the bal. Westbrook offense will need to score 60 a game to compete with the top 4 teams in their district. Nederland will need quite a few young players to consistently make plays  on both side of the ball, play ball control offense & score , lights out defense, mistake free football & get some turnovers each game to get a playoff spot. Imo

So what you’re saying is BWBs defense is soft as tissue at this point? Got it haha
