Long story short...better build some confidence in your kids or they won't believe that you know how to win. -
Evadale 97 West Hardin 64/FINAL
oldschool2 replied to WOSgrad's topic in High School Boys Basketball
Say 2 teams play each other first game of district. Both of similar skill. Team A makes a schedule conducive to winning and is 13-2 going into district. Every kid on the bench got lots of good experience and the team was able to work on any and every situation to come. Team B makes an excruciating schedule ( to prepare for the playoffs). They are 2-13 going into district. The only time the backup players got to play was after the game was too far out of reach to win. In which time they, too, got their teeth kicked in just like the starters did. Which team wins that first game in the district against each other? -

The result of this game would have been the same regardless of the non-district schedule. A tough pre-season schedule making you better is a myth. -
Seriously just had a conversation about what race a coach should be...wow. lol
-
Just out of curiosity...what kind of numbers did Central and Ozen have in their high school football programs? I was at a buddy's house talking to a guy that coaches at a school that we speculate will be in that 6A district with them. So just wondering...what kind of numbers might they potentially have?

Hiring a head coach.. would you rather
oldschool2 replied to dillonpanthers's topic in High School Football
A school can use whatever reason they think is best for the hiring of any employee...I just wish they would stick with the decision long enough to see it come to fruition. That takes longer than a couple seasons. And I know schools can't help it if a coach leaves but if they don't get to at least see their freshmen become seniors then it's impossible to know what kind of impact a coach had on the program. There's too much of a "quick fix" mentality when it comes to stuff like this. -
BISD Votes to Merge Central and Ozen beginning in 2018-19

Gang fights coming. -
I predicted earlier on that they might split. I know EC is probably better on paper but I’m going to stick with that. I’ll say they both win at home.
-
I think a lot of these All State / All Region type awards are mostly stat driven. When a team has a good team and a lot of good players the wealth is shared... maybe that’s the problem. The people that make these lists only have season stats to go on...for instance if Newton had 3 1500 yard rushers and some other team had a 2000 yard rusher...guess who might be more likely to be on the All State list. Doesnt always matter who’s better just who had the better year on paper.
-
That is a fact. It is also a fact that the same coach got shut out in round 1 the following year.
-
I don’t know what happened. But 12 in his 1st year...and 7 the next. That’s literally 1 game away from only winning half as many games one year later. I mean...I’m sure it was because they were gutted by graduation. But according to your logic there’s no reason they didn’t win 12 again.
-
Great example. I guess I can’t argue that point. Well...unless I say this. Danny Malone came in and led PNG to a 12-3 record his first year and a Round 4 loss. But then the very next year he went 7-4 and was shutout in Round 1. Um...was it coaching that made the difference? It’s simple. Kids graduate...or improve. At EVERY school on the schedule. Maybe a few of the other schools had big senior groups the year before he got there...I don’t know. Saying that he came in year one with the same kids as the year before is not true. Unless you think that a bunch of 16 year old sophomores are the exact same players that they will be as 17 year old juniors. I’m not saying that’s the exact scenario but I think you get my point. A LOT changes from one year to the next. Even if one team has the same kids...because other teams may not have the same kids.
-
Not sure why nobody ever talks about that...
-
What way? They won it all in 05 right? I know that’s relatively recent...especially to an old fart like me. But in 05 the kids on this year’s team hadn’t even started kindergarten yet. So it’s not that recent. But what I’m referring to as recent they spent the better part of a decade bowing out about round 3. All of the sudden they split all of the districts (4A and down) in half and they make it to the title game 2 out of 4 years. I’m not saying they weren’t really good...in fact they maybe could’ve beaten the champ in D1 had they played. But to think that the UIL didn’t help out is a little naive. It actually happens every other year...whatever number that UIL deams as “the cutoff” creates brand new winners and brand new losers for 2 years at a time.
-
I meant recently
-
And don’t mean to shortchange any accomplishments...because it is certainly a feat of Hall of Fame proportions. But let’s not forget. Before the UIL literally split the classifications in half WOS wasn’t even getting out of the region. And Newton wasn’t either.
-
Fact. No offense...but this response sums up the culture of most of this area. Schools like Carthage DO think a title is worth that type of money. Which is what explains his salary, the turf college level field, the 100 yard indoor practice field, the $100K instant replay screen...etc. You may not think all that matters but it’s doing his recruiting without him trying. Not to mention the type of community support it shows to allow a high school to spend that type of money on football.
-
Negative. I just have a lot of buddies from my college basketball days that coach. And a lot of family. And LEAST talent? No. Less talent? All the time. That just happened with Highland Park. They still had a ton of talent just not as much as Manvel. I’m actually surprised it was even close.

From my original post. ”Now I’m not saying a good coach won’t make a difference.”
-
Ok. Like I said...no sense in you and I continuing the conversation. We’ll never see eye to eye on this one.
-
I know it would never happen but I wish it would...just so I could liquidate my assets and bet you every dollar I had. Because if you think that there’s no reason continuing the conversation.

And you said that you agree that the staff changes when HC changes...
