I think size may be the problem. And please stop saying "not good enough for D1..but maybe juco or D2". There is a TON of talent on every level of college athletics. I'll admit there is a significant drop off most of the time..especially in terms of size and athleticism.. But coaches on those level are trying to recruit the best possible players too. Colleges beat teams in higher classifications every year.

Apparently you're unaware of how much impact a player of that caliber can make in a small school. Especially one that's in the backfield. Well let me clarify...it...literally...is the difference between winning state championships and not winning them.

I know it would be the easy thing to do. I just don't know why they would put Coldspring and LaMarque in the same district in Region 4. LaMarque I could see no doubt...but I still like to think that UIL at least keeps the regions geographically sensible. Coldspring is a lot further north than the typical region 4..at least when you consider Hardin, Anahuac, and East Chambers have actually been in and out of region 4 already. Honestly I don't know tho...UIL definitely does not always do things that make sense.

You're gonna make a comparison to a team (small school) that had D1 commits in the backfield?.. TALENT goes the WHOLE way at that level. I'm not saying the Waskom coach isn't a good coach...but he's not winning state at Colmesneil High School. I'll bet every dollar I have on that one.

True, every head coach get's their first head coaching job at some point. But you're wrong if you think they'll find somebody truly committed to building. This is a stepping stone to the fullest. You're also wrong if you think you have to have head coaching experience to get a good head job. Why would you risk taking a crappy job just to say you've been a head coach?.. unless you're young (don't know any better) or bad. I was told by very good sources that the previous AD's got zero support from admin, and once you start losing everybody knows you get zero support from the community. This is a no win situation. Head Coach experience or not.. He will make no money, get to hire no coaches, get no new facilities, have no support, and WILL NOT WIN. Why on earth would anyone put themselves through that?

Exactly like I said. A rookie coach looking for the title of Head Coach...so they can have it on their resume. Be sure and tell them that they will probably not get very much of a payraise if they get one at all. In my opinion it won't be worth the headache they're about to endure. But that's just me...well...and several people I know. Good luck to all involved.

I think part of a Sup's success is based on what they do for the school financially also. Sup that leaves a school in the positive has a lot more probability of landing a better sup job than leaving a school in the hole. That trumps a well rounded athletic program. Especially for smaller districts that depend very heavily on every single dollar earned/spent...and literally have people's job depending on the number of transfer students they may or may not get. It's not about the kids like it should be..Otherwise you wouldn't have teachers teaching more than 1 prep or several different subjects..like a lot of small schools do. If my kid's math teacher only teaches 1 grade of math, and your kid's math teacher teaches multiple grades of math...my kid is learning more math. I don't care what anyone says..you can't put your entire focus on several things and expect to be good at them. But schools do it anyway to save from hiring more teachers. And that's just an example. Like the one on topic now...why hire another administrator, and a teacher...when you can just give the teacher a stipend for doing head football. It's about money...and it's a shame. Because if they do that the kids will suffer. And maybe the sup won't absorb AD responsibilities... they still won't be willing to pay what it's gonna take to get a good football coach. I've heard from very good sources that the last few Colmesneil AD's were making a salary in the 50'sK range. So you know what...I change my mind. The sup needs to take AD duties because they won't get a good one anyway. Happy hunting.

The fact that the sup is absorbing the AD responsibilities shows that they as a school district care very little about the athletic program. It would've been hard enough to hire a good football coach because it's quite obvious that the talent pool (if there ever was one) is completely drying up. Now throw in the fact that the HFC will likely have to teach classes...even if it's P.E...you are guaranteed to get a coach that is either a terrible coach and can't find a job anywhere, or a rookie coach that's looking for the title of Head Coach. Either way Colmesneil will not get a good football coach because they aren't even trying. I would say I feel bad for the kids and community but they deserve what's coming.

Sounds like typical small town crap to me. People start bashing coach because they aren't satisfied with results. Nothing at all to do with the fact that maybe the kids aren't any good.. Not at all.. Am I mistaken or are the kids playing now part of the same groups that had to have 6th graders play in JH so they'd have enough for a team to begin with? And didn't these groups pretty much go win less in sub-varsity and JH competition? Same song and dance..smh. By the way..1st you meed with the Coach himself. (if he'll meet with you. I wouldn't.) 2nd step in the chain of command is Sup, not principal. AD and principal are on same level. Then if not satisfied you speak at board meeting. But board makes hires on Sup's recommendations (vast majority of the time). At least they should.. You can't just fire someone because of disgruntled fans or parents. The guy is under contract and will remain under contract unless he is non renewed or breaks the agreement of his contract. Shame this community gets so much attention because of a few idiots.

Just throwing this out there. HJ outscored Silsbee entire game but 2nd quarter. I know all that matters is the win. But things may be different next time. And a lot of talk about Silsbee being "hot" from 3. 7 for 25 is hot? Well dang...I was a better shooter than I thought. Ok. Carry on.

Athletics isn't for everyone. Perhaps these kids weren't in good enough condition to endure the physical requirements of being an athlete. Looks to me as a sign for a schedule change. Like my dad used to say "if it's too hot in the kitchen...". I'm sure you know the rest. And yes...pansies are multiplying at an uncontrollable rate. Let's just beat society to the punch and drop athletics class altogether, sell football equipment, sell scoreboards, and go to flag football, offensive only basketball, and pitching machine baseball...wouldn't want anyone to get hurt. After the game, the kids could celebrate the fact that everyone won and hold hands while singing campfire songs.

Who was HF's coach during all this? Sounds like they would've definitely had the talent to make a run at it.

AAU is a necessary evil. The benefit they get from it is that they will be on the floor with other good players. But as far as learning anything concerning basketball foundation skills..nah..I don't think so. Learn how to hone their ability to score or handle the ball one on one for sure. But there isn't any TEAM defense being played in most AAU circuits.

Teachings? Surely you jest. The little AAU I've seen is as follows: Can't play defense...otherwise wouldn't be able to snowbird (and get a dunk). And when the 5 defenders beat the ball down the floor, normally the person that crosses half court with the ball is using some 1 on 1 moves to try to score. Normally everyone else stands out of the way.. That was my take on it anyway. I probably won't be watching any "AAU" ball anytime soon. I catch a fair amount of college games though. Both TV (of course) and in person. For a while, skill was on the down slide and athleticism was on the rise. However...I think skill is catching up to athleticism. I think the reason is the shot clock. It forces kids to become scorers because when you only have a set amount of time each possession you have to have players than can score. College coaches are recruiting more and more really athletic kids that have the ability to score. The more I think about it, the more I really wish they would put in the shot clock in high school. Who want's to see a team full of defensive specialists that stall because they can't score. I love when people tell me "my kid/grandkid is a really good defensive player". Oh you mean they suck on offense? Can't shoot or dribble?.. haha

Well I've been trying to explain since the time my account was created the reasons the rest of the state is leaving setx behind. Especially in football and education. Especially since my previous post was to a WOS fan. It's simple. Money = high quality coaches, high quality teachers, more coaches, more coaches that have fewer or no classroom assignments, nicer facilities (venue/weight room/locker rooms/ library/etc..) which attract families/players, players in summer speed/strength camps, 7 on 7 summer tournaments (sponsored), personal training. It's a slow process but money can and does buy wins. Typical setx attitude is "well this is how we did it in 1980 and it's good enough". There are always exceptions...but for the most part look at ALL football state champions over the last decade, and look at their facilities, coach's salary, average household income in school district... Like I said, there are some that don't necessarily apply. But it is no coincidence that the same schools/areas are making deep runs every year in football.

Well..actually money does have quite a bit to do with it. More than you think. I know it's hard for setx fans to understand.. But anyway.. on top of that you also need good players. Because all the heart and pride in the world won't win without talented players. Sorry.

It doesn't matter how much money you pay or who you bring in.. Barbers Hill isn't winning a state championship in this classification unless the coach is bringing a bunch of players.

Unfortunately it doesn't really matter how you may feel about it...or that they've been top 25 every year for the past 10-12 years. TABC most of the time bases it's ranking on records. And they get their records from maxpreps.com. So if a coach doesn't enter all of the team info (win/loss) into maxpreps then that team will most likely not be in the rankings. And if a school does have info in maxpreps but that team has several losses...they may or may not be in the rankings. I'm pretty sure it would have to be losses to other ranked teams. That's like UH being ranked so well in college football for a while...even tho they probably couldn't beat half (or more) of the teams in the SEC that weren't ranked at all. Rankings don't matter. Who cares if they're ranked or not...

They need to cut him loose. No way this is good for the team, especially knowing he may decide AGAIN that he wants to "focus on football". I say get rid of him.

I 100% respect the kid's wishes. He wants to drop basketball and get ready for his career in college football...go for it. I was just speaking in regard to an earlier post that said he's changed his mind once before. Giving me the implication it may happen again. I'm just saying Kountze basketball doesn't need that. Play...or don't play. But don't go back and forth. Those Kountze kids need to know they DONT NEED any one player to have a good year. Would it help? Sure. But just move on and make up for the absence somewhere else. I will add that personally I don't believe that playing would've hurt anything. I doubt he would miss any "prep time" by playing basketball instead of focusing on football. Maybe get a little more time in the weight room...but going to miss a lot of running. Whether court or grass...sprints are sprints. No way he runs as much on his own that he would playing basketball especially in Kountze. But hey...to each their own.
