Buna is a good team, period. They are solid and steady, nothing flashy, just blue collar guys who play hard and limit mistakes. They will be right in the middle of the district title chase. As far as saying "Silsbee has not lived up to the hype" I'd have to disagree. Take a look at the schedule these guys have played, it's basically been a "Pre district state tournament". Caldwell, China Spring, Diboll, plus several good 4A teams, that's a tall order for anybody. While other teams beat up on hapless nobodies the Tigers went out and scheduled a NASTY string of opponents to prepare for district and beyond. Real baseball people know the Tigers are for real and will certainly have a say in who wins 21-3A.

Rivals you have to pay.  I think it's about a $100/yr or something.  Here is one that they put out that was FREE.  How generous of them.  :)

I had this big long write up but deleted it, instead, here is my quick version opinion. If a kid playing at Nederland, or any other high school, wants to play at the next level, and thinks they have the tools to do so, go prove it on the field, get their name in recruiting data base and go to college camps. Simply being a camp phenom will get you an offer from some level of college. I have a different opinion on what Nederland coaches will do for their players. I happen to think they do all they need to do. Be careful what you wish for too. A full ride to play college ball is a hard ride to finish. Your son will go through things you can't imagine just to get that degree at the end. I can't even attempt to write down in words the dedication it requires to finish what they start, nor can I explain the gratitude for finishing. Just my opinion. Good luck.

It is amazing to read some of this stuff.  But it is the society we live in.  "My baby didn't get a college scholarship!!!!!!  Has to be the coach's fault."  I will say again, I know plenty of recruiters that roll through NHS and they all say the staff is a class act and are open and honest about each kid.  They are gracious with video and information.  Not sure what else a coach can do.  If you are unhappy with the process, subscribe to one of those recruiting services for about $3K, get more letters than you care to read and still have no scholarship to show for it.  SMH.

I've been asking myself that question for years but Mathews is the head coach and I'm sure he has his reasons and whatever they are I trust them.

Yeah, all that winning gets old...I wouldn't want my kid to play there either...smh.

What nobody on here mentions is the outstanding job that the Nederland coaches do teaching their players life skills and how to be productive members of society...let's face it, most little johnnies from around here are NOT going to be making a living playing football, but they will need to be productive husbands, fathers, and employees...you can't put a price tag on that and Nederland's coaches do it very well and IMO nothing is more important

Thanks guys but this is his achievement! I just want him off to college next year. @Bigcam - Coach Denley is a class act type of guy and he has told me some great things about my son that he see in him. Demarcus has worked very hard since the last combine where he posted a 70.92 Sparq and really put it in after season's end. He now knows that it is time to go to work and battle the best of the best in the state of Texas and I expect nothing less. I texted Demarcus the email this morning before posting it on here and his response was simple, " I am thankful!!!" He blew me away with that and now I know he gets it. @Scatright - Thank you sir but I am just happy for him that his hard work is paying off thus far. With a junior day Saturday at UT and then to go to Houston and post those numbers, wow, we are truly blessed! Thanks again guys!!!

Point being Mayfield, quit hammering coaches.  An opinion is one thing, an opinion that could affect a man's livelihood is another.  I am sorry you took offense to the comment about size of your son.  Not meaning to make it personal but I see that I did.  In general, that is what we as coaches find.  Parents get mad that their kid didn't get a football scholarship or a chance to play at the next level and blame coaches, yet their son is not nearly big enough to even think about playing beyond high school.

And, just so you know, I have a son who is 5'9", 160#'s that was a 2 year starter on a 5A team that played in the State Championship game.  I understand as a parent and a coach that he is a very good football player.  I also understand as a coach, he is not a college football player.  I am fine with that.  I know it has nothing to do with coaches but everything to do with physical characteristics.

Great point.  Kids don't go to juco cuz they can't play.  Most of them are FBS caliber players.

Do DI colleges still have the option to bring a non-qualifier in under Proposition 48?

The question was asked how many team won state that played 7v7. Like they are making it out to not be worth it to play. Well 7v7 was made pretty big here in Texas and there are alot of Texas qb's on college and NFL rosters. So my point is it must be doing some thing good for these kids. Whether they win state or the 7v7 tourney.

I have coached at the college level and the high school level.  I can tell you that parents are so misinformed and have such ludicrous expectations that I could talk about this for days.  Here is the break down:

D1 FBS-  95 scholarships in football.  CANNOT break them up.  If you get a football scholarship to one of these schools, IT IS A FULL SCHOLARSHIP.  I would say 99% of the schools honor it for 4/5 years but will pull the scholarships of athletes that have continuous problems.

D1- FCS- 65 sholarships in football.  CAN break them up.  Most of their scholarships go to kickback players from FBS schools.  They will sign a few HS seniors each year but very few are awarded full $$$$.  They usually offer enough $ to cover what financial aid does not.  Most FCS kids are FBS talent but may be an inch too short or 5 lbs too light.  I can tell you, that FCS wants to sign FBS players as much as possible.
SIDE BAR-  Not sure what schools you are looking at but Pell $ does not cover the cost to go to school.  Not even close.

D2-      35 Scholarships.  CAN break them up.  These schools many times are more talented than the FCS schools.  Their rosters are loaded with  kickbacks from FBS players that ran into troubles.  These schools pick up the JuCo kids that didn't take care of their business to qualify for D1 schools.  Most if not all these schools spend their money on transfers and do not offer any football money to HS seniors.  Many times, they offer $500 but that is not a football scholarship.  That is school money any student can get.  Be very careful about sending your athlete to play at these schools.  Quote form a D2 head coach- "The cesspool of academics that is D2 athletics."

D3-  ZERO football scholarships.  This is where most of the high school players fall.  If you ever get a chance to go to watch a D3 game, you need to go.  There are some very talented kids on the field and all of them (in general) were one of the best players on their high school team.  if a kid truly wants to play college football, there is opportunity at this level.  What most D3 coaches find is that kids do not want to play football, they want a scholarship.  Very sad that this is where our society is but a scholarship is seen as a badge of honor now and if an athlete does not get one, then the coaches didn't work hard enough for him.

JuCo- Various #'s of scholarships.  This is where the non-qualifiers are.  If your athlete isn't FBS or FCS, they won't play here either.

NAIA-  Another great option for most HS seniors.  This is a dying level of competition.  If your athlete is offered a scholarship to an NAIA school, look at the costs to see how much is out of pocket.  Usually it is cheaper to go to a D3 school then to go NAIA.  Also, there are not many NAIA close to TX.

Hope this helps and again, this is just tip of the iceberg stuff.

Great points!  I've also seen some Slot T offenses doing 7v7 to get extra reps with their timing of fakes, footwork 'and passing' with their style of offense.  They are not doing it to 'win' a 7v7 game and they don't try to compete in SQTs.  They are doing it because it's a heck of a lot better than not doing it.  Plain and simple.  It's the little things.

why do people assume 7on7 is about offense? even if ur a slot t team, your defense must rep coverages vs pass schemes. eventually you do have to beat a carthage, navasota, lake travis, slc, etc... you better get as many reps as you can working against no huddle/tempo/throwing teams.

teach/rep your friday night pass schemes/no huddle/signals, etc... on offense and your coverages/adjustments to formations on defense during the athletic period in the spring and your players rep them all summer in local leagues and tournaments. how can that not help???

only negative to 7on7 is uil wants hs coaches there to 'supervise' but not coach. let em coach too. the kids want to play and they want their coaches coaching them.

I think it's great. This will be the first year we are going to participate in SQTs. Hosting a non-SQT tournament this year as a fundraiser to help fund the SQTs and possible state. Also have local businesses willing to help out if needed.

Usually do two normal tournaments and the Longview league. Won the Longview league past two years.

Organization is key for us. Have 4/5 guys helping out. Few players that have either been in the NFL or is still currently in the NFL. Few others that are close to the program. None of which have a personal agenda.

Meet with the HS coaches before it all gets started then have a meeting with the HS coaches and players. Gets the point across.

Like I stated earlier, organization is key.
