A cool crisp night in Vidor, Coach Mathews in a hoodie with the hood pulled over his head but still wearing gym shorts as per usual.

Senior night at Pirate stadium, if Vidor losses another close game here it would be a brutal but fitting way to end this season.

None of you seem to be looking at the brackets. Jasper and WOS could very likely meet again in the 3rd round. Silsbee would have to get by a very good Giddings in the 3rd round possibly which will be tough. I can see a Jasper/WOS vs Silsbee quarterfinal in a best case scenario but Giddings, Sweeny and Wharton and LaGrange or Bellville could throw a wrench in that. WOS gave Nederland their closest game to date I must add with a 1 point loss and has made it to the 4th round the past 7 years since 2011.
In 4A D1 local teams may sweep round 1 but round 2 will be a sweep by the Carthage, Kilgore, Henderson district.
In 5A I can see PAM making it to the 4th round but then they’d potentially face either a really good Hutto or a rematch with New Caney.
In 6A D2 West Brook could go 3 or 4 rounds as all the heavy hitters are in D1.
GP North Shore is a heavy favorite to make the state finals in 6A D1.
Ned and PNG will run into Fort Bend Marshall, Huntsville, Manvel, and/or Marshall within the 2nd or 3rd round. An upset or two could get one of them to the 4th round but that’s a tough road in that region.
Newton will roll to AT&T most likely although you never know. Upsets happen.
Woodville has a tough road potentially in 3A D1 with Diboll, Franklin and/or Cameron Yoe waiting in the 3rd round.

My picks for most likely to advance to at least the 3rd round (6A-3A)

    Newton
    GP North Shore
    Jasper
    WO-S
    Nederland
    West Brook
    PN-G
    Silsbee
    Woodville

You could also contribute middle school
football too. Vidor has one middle school with an A and a B team. Kids on the B team for the most part will get discouraged and decide not to play in HS. Kids at Ned and PNG have two middle schools producing two A teams and two B teams, so now you have two groups of A teams combining in HS so your participation level in the 9th grade is already higher!

I do not think talent wise they are much different but Vidor rarely if ever, are equal in physical size as Ned and PNG along with many other schools. For whatever reason Vidor just doesn't have many lineman sized athletes.

Missed the game, but read all the posts in this thread.  (Thanks Boneyard for your coverage!)   A couple of posts referenced injuries and how at this time of year all teams have them.  Agreed, all teams have them, but how  injury affects a team is primarily determined by that teams depth, and to an extent, what position(s) are affected.   When you have enough depth, you can plug another player in and although he may not be as good as the sidelined starter, (or he'd likely be starting), there is not a drastic drop off in production.   On the other hand, when you have to bring players up from the JV, including quarterback, just to have players familiar with the positions you are asking them to  play, you may have a depth problem.   Not to mention how many are walking wounded and those already going both ways.  Don't take this as an excuse by any means,  it's just what has happened  this year injury wise to a Pirate team that didn't have a lot of numbers to begin with.

Been deleted once so I will try to stay calm. Bottom line those men do more in a season then most of you guys will do in a lifetime. You have a problem with Jeff then quit hiding behind past pirate, or past pirate 88, or realville and go talk to him, bet you don’t have the guts to.

All i know about vidor football is that they are tough, scrappy kids. Might not have the most talent or run the best offense, but they are definitely near the top of setx year in year out at playing tough hard nose ball. I would gladly take a few of the vidor rbs and defensive front 7 guys of the past fews year at png if i had the power to do so. Would take so much pressure off the O. If matthews does anything he makes tough resilient kids who can throw a punch and take one. Whether he is a good coach or not is up to the vidor faithful and those that sign his checks

No doubt some Vidor fans are disappointed, and yes I'm convinced the defense schemes could be better, and yada yada yada.  Facts are, the smallest school in Dist, and it sounds like more injuries than most.  But to those up in arms, I've seen Vidor teams go years without winning.  In 1987 the Pirates scored 48 points.  In 1962 38 points.  Fact is, before anyone starts calling for Matthews head, remember how many really bad coaches there are.  And I've seen to many coaching at Vidor.  There's a good reason for folks saying Interstate 10, Vidor 0.  At least now they have to go to Highway 69, Vidor 61.

Lee has some good athletes for the first time in a while. Just wish they had more depth. Next year they should be pretty good with both the QB and running back regurning.

My opinion is based off the last 19 or 20 years, not just this year. Let’s keep this conversation in context using facts and results. If you want to keep clapping your hands like the Dallas Cowboys Head Coach Jason Garrett does an have mediocre results, have at it. Do you think PNG or Nederland would be happy with a coach producing a below .500 record year after year? Let me answer that for you. NOPE!!! This is forum where people express thier opinions, complaints, etc... We will just have to agree to disagree. Keep on clapping an see if that changes anything,

Quinten Root he was the JV quarterback until tonight, he played great. Not a whole lot of long runs from him but he threw a bunch of great passes when we needed them.

Old man Willie Settle had he still been alive would have been heartbroken over this season. That old man never missed a Vidor game. He loved him some Pirates. I remember way back in the 1970s' and 1980's when I went church with the Settle's in Beaumont he would always talk up his Pirates. Sure was a fine man and a huge Vidor fan.

My hats off to Vidor even though they were part of I-pad gate. These kids have played so hard losing in such crazy fashion. Two overtime losses and the loss on the last play tonight. If those flipped Vidor would be 3-2 in district with Dayton the only thing in the way of a playoff berth. Vidor was literally that close. Literally 10-12 points from being a playoff team. The greatest worst season for a team I may have ever seen

They may end up 3-7, but imo, they’ll be the best 3-7 team in the country.

Vidor fans have to be proud of these kids.  Outmanned, outgunned, But rarely out of the game.  Even with the adversity of heartbreaking losses and injuries, there aren’t many in the District would want to play them again.  My hats off to the Pirates and Coach Matthews.
