Since we're bring up stupid quotes, here are a few from Palin: Which newspapers does Palin use to help form her world views? "All of 'em, any of 'em that have been in front of me over all these years." When Courig asked Palin which Supreme Court rulings she disagreed with other than Roe v. Wade: "Well, let's see. There's -- of course -- in the great history of America rulings there have been rulings." When she was a mayor, and a councilman objected to the $50K she spent renovating the mayor's office without the council's consent: "I'm the mayor, I can do whatever I want until the courts tell me I can't.'' On Afghanistan: "They are also building schools for the Afghan children so that there is hope and opportunity in our neighboring country of Afghanistan." After originally supporting the "Bridge To Nowhere": "I told the Congress,'Thanks, but no thanks,' on that Bridge to Nowhere."

Construction Strike Could Derail 2010 World Cup
bullets13 replied to bullets13's topic in SETXsports Archived Threads
those stadiums were pretty modest... i have no idea how many people will travel to see these world cup games, but it's likely in the millions, so they're going to need much nicer, much more accessible, much larger stadiums. the world cup should've never been given to South Africa anyway. their country is nowhere near advanced enough to host the largest sporting event in the world. -
at least if you're of the mindset that any publicity is good publicity.

JOHANNESBURG -- South African construction workers went on an indefinite strike Wednesday at stadiums being built for the 2010 World Cup -- a move that could derail Africa's historic first World Cup tournament. Thousands of workers at stadiums across the country put down their tools after wage negotiations deadlocked earlier this week. Workers are demanding a 13 percent pay increase while employers are offering 10.4 percent. The strike could delay completion of flagship projects such as the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg and stadiums in Cape Town and Durban. Other stadiums in smaller towns have also been affected. The venues need to be completed by December to meet deadlines set by the game's ruling body FIFA before the tournament kicks off in June 2010. Lesiba Seshoka of the National Union of Mineworkers, which represents construction workers, said 70,000 workers were involved in the strike, which would continue until employers met their demands. He said the union was not worried about the completion of the stadiums -- that was a concern of the tournament's local organizing committee. "We are worried about our families getting food, not a rich man buying a ticket to watch a game," he said. Joe Campanella, from the South African Federation of Civil Engineering Contractors, which represents construction companies, said only 11,000 workers took part in the strike. He has said the deal offered by employers amounts to a 65 percent increase, including benefits. However, the unions have complained that some workers are earning about $1.50 an hour and others $5 a week. Workers in South Africa are supposed to earn a minimum wage of about $200 a month. The strike has been criticized for jeopardizing South Africa's chances of hosting a successful World Cup -- a monthlong event avidly watched by hundreds of millions around the world. But the Congress of South African Trade Unions, which represents the country's largest trade union federations, has come out in support of the construction workers and says the dispute is not targeted at the World Cup. "COSATU, and the construction workers, are as passionate about the 2010 World Cup as anyone, and will do everything possible to ensure its success. But we will not tolerate the stadiums being built by workers who are underpaid or working in dangerous or unhealthy conditions," the organization said in a statement. Danny Jordaan, chief executive of the local organizing committee, said the strike would soon be resolved and was confident the stadiums will be completed on schedule. "The construction workers have been the lifeblood of the 2010 FIFA World Cup project. Their hard work has ensured that we are on track to meet our deadlines and that our stadiums will be among the best in the world next year," he said in a statement. Patrick Geqeza, a shop steward at the Soccer City stadium in Johannesburg, said he understood the importance of having the World Cup in South Africa and completing the stadiums in time. "We feel bad about going on strike," he said, but added there was little alternative

Its misspeaking. Who was rendered speechless? I'm beginning to see a double standard here. i "misspoke", but fixed it before you posted did you see the palin/couriq interview? it would've been better had she been rendered speechless. instead she was rendered stupid. there's no double standard. if a candidate gives an intelligent answer, but misspeaks, i can live with that. bush was known for that, and while i'm not going to lie and say i never made fun of him, i never held it against him when i judged his intelligence. palin looked like a deer in headlights. not only did she "misspeak", she CLEARLY had no clue what she was talking about in several KEY areas. considering she was trying to become our vice president, i had a serious problem with that. so, to paraphrase: candidate who knows his/her stuff but speaks poorly = OK. candidate who can motivate crowd/arouse older men but doesn't know what the heck is going on in the world = no bueno.
-
Candidates misspeak all the time. i can live with that. it's when they're rendered speechless by a question they should have an intelligent answer to that i start to worry.

I'm actually a fat phat guy Im so white LMAO so true... if gabe were any whiter, he'd be clear.

Maybe he is or maybe he isn't. He is almost certainly more educated if that matters. Here are some questions. Does intelligence make a person right in political decisions? If a test is given and it is discovered that I have a higher IQ than others on this board, does that invalidate their political arguments? Should the presidency be determined by IQ if it really matters? If so, let's just give a test and pick the smartest man/woman. Does education really matter? My brother has 4 college degrees, 2 bachelors and 2 masters. He is working on his 3rd masters. I would venture to guess that he is way more educated and probably has a lot higher IQ than Palin, Obama, McCain or Biden. I wonder if my brother should be the next President of the United States. does he share your politcal views??? ;D

i heard he'll be coming off the bench. as long as he's got no ego problems with doing that, he'll definitely be a key component to another possible championship run. -

that commercial cracks me up as well... all jokes aside, i think i'll stick to congratulating mr. perkins on here. i don't know that i'd be able to get into the wedding

i can't wait to crash it... perk! perk! will sign my tuxedo?!?! remember when you dunked on me in summer ball? that was awesome! hey, why wasn't i invited to the batchelor party? hey, you had 12 double doubles last year. can i have one?

Good, a point of agreement. I just think it is bad in political arguments to make statements about the other party's candidate that very well might apply to your own. You may not have done so but others certainly have. It is like my old argument about war records. When Bob Dole ran against Bill Clinton, the Democrats thought that a true war hero meant nothing. Fast forward a few years and when it is John Kerry against George Bush, all of a sudden the war record is of utmost importance. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. defnitely a valid point. i don't know if it's as much throwing stones in glass houses as simply doing your best in every election to highlight the significant achievements of your candidate while doing your best to downplay the achievements of your opponent. everyone debating on here does basically the same thing, trying to highlight the highs of our arguments while glossing over the lows, and then trying to bring up the low points of the other person's argument while glossing over the high points.

exactly.

You are probably right about this but one thing that also helped Obama get elected is the things he promised which have not happened since he as been elected, he told the sheeple what they wanted to hear and now he is doing whatever he wants with the help of congress. every president ever elected was at least partially done so based on a bunch of impossible promises that they made to voters during their campaign. empty promises are as much a part of politics as actually getting things done.

Kobe won't miss him. he only averaged 9 points a game this year, and has averaged less than 7 a game in a five year career. the fact of the matter is, it's a WHOLE lot easier to score when you have Kobe penetrating and drawing three defenders. Also, looking at his stats, he's either injury proned or wasn't good enough to make in on the court over the past 3 seasons. in his first season with the knicks, he played 80 games. the next three years he played in 57, 57, and 35 games, respectively, before playing 82 games this season. the rockets just gave a very average player a pretty big contract, long contract. Approximately $6.5M over the next five years, making him the 3rd or 4th highest paid player on the team. -

the question is how well all five of these personalities will mesh. they did well last year, but that was before Rondo became a superstar in the playoffs. Now you're going to have 3 legit superstars, and two more players that think they are (Rondo may be one eventually, but i think his numbers are going to shrink dramatically in this lineup). how well will they get along? i'm not making any predictions. i didn't think the "big 3" would make it, and they certainly proved me wrong. -
maybe it's an issue for the police now?

today was his 68th career PGA title, putting him only 5 behind Jack on the career list. he also has 36 wins on the European tour. Jack had 0. Tiger is only 33 years old. Jack won 28 titles after he turned 33, so i'd say that Tiger's well ahead of his pace. It's also worth mentioning that Tiger skips many, many tournaments a year, which means he'd probably already be well ahead of Jack if he chose to play even a slightly fuller schedule. he also trains like a world class athlete, so i think he'll be effective and on top of his game far longer than Jack was, barring some unseen catastrophe.
