If Bmt. United wants to move towards the modern era of FB with an explosive Offense, they should hire Brandon Craus. When he left Dayton as OC like 7 years ago, they were a very good Offense that scored well over 30+ pts every game. Then he left and went up to Groveton as AD/HC and in less than 1 year turned that program around and went on an Offensive Explosion there too. I believe he ended up sending like 3 kids from a 2A school into college to play.
I would love to see him at a school where he has lots of athletes to choose from and great facilities.

Well, to be fair the databases I researched only go back to '88.  There may be more titles.  But according to what I saw the Lady Lions' 1989 title is the most recent and the only one I saw out of of SETX from 1988-2019.

Soulja, I told you and Q last night at the game that WB would make the playoffs.  You know I could care less about the school but I like the coach and the young lady's.  After Friday's game, they will be at the halfway point and I see a 3 way tie coming for the 3rd and 4th spots at 4-3 between WB, LaPorte and DP.  The second half of this schedule is going to be so important.  Don't count Sterling out yet either if they can get a win over DP Friday.

This irks me!!!  Can't find them on here.  Can't find them on Maxpreps.  Can't find them on Twitter, Facebook, etc.  The district chairman (Channelview) can't even give you girl basketball finals.  Lucky I've established a method (email, messenger, text) to contact just about every coach in our 6A district and with Soulja's help we get it done.

I agree with you, open gym is usually full of boys but several of our girls on our team grew up playing with boys and it shows on game days.

I would have to say non of them are pure shooters, more of scorers because they will get their points from a variety of ways.

One can shove a seed in the ground and tell it "you need to grow", but it has a better chance of making it if it is nurtured and cared for as it develops.....

here is another thought to get some discussion on the original topic.  Shooters vs scorers.
Depends a little on the system they are in.   We are a pressure defense and dribble drive offensive team.  (if you can't dribble drive then your minutes are limited a little) We are trying to develop players that can drive, score, and shoot.     We have two players shooting about 30-35% from behind the line.  One has made 47 3's and the other has made 38 - (29 games) not sure how those numbers compare to the other "shooters" in the area but I know the opposing coach's yell "SHOOTER SHOOTER" every time one of them catches the ball... Lol

Our gym is available a lot during the off season for our girls and the past 3 years we have had great turnout in numbers of girls that access it.   There has been a direct correlation between this group putting in work in the off-season and having team success in the season.

Then HJ is most certainly doing it right. They are making all of the necessary deposits.  That's what I used to tell my kids growing up.. If you need a withdrawal later, deposit the time/effort now.

Great observations on here with Coach Shu and many more.  Here as the WOS girls coach here is what I have observed.  Repetitions are key to any success in sports.  Since being assigned as the head coach here I make sure my gym stays open for my girls.  Unlike other programs we don't have a little dribblers program here yet and a lot of my girls can't afford AAU.  However, we utilized the UIL's new rule for skills training this past summer focusing on fundamentals and I have seen it pay off.
We're still behind on skill set but we make up some of this with our athleticism.  Girls are not like boys and besides the obvious here is what I mean.  A boy will watch basketball on tv or play the video game of 2K and then head outside trying the moves he just saw.  Girls rarely will even watch basketball on tv and if they do they rarely go outside to practice what they saw.  Now I know they're anomalies to this and few girls will do it.
The key to growing basketball in our small areas is through little dribblers but we have to still think outside the box.  It does us no good to run a little dribblers program where we have 2 teams that play each other every week or mix teams with boys/girls.  What we need to do is run little dribblers like we do pee-wee football.  For example West Orange Stark Little Dribblers plays Bridge City this week at all ages and one of the programs host the event.  Next week WOS may travel to LCM area and play their Little Dribblers program at LCM.  What this will do is a few things.  Number 1 make it where you build competition and make the community start paying attention on Saturday.  A lot of people would pay to go see these type of games on Saturdays which will fund the program.
It will also make parents aware of the competition that is out there and the work that needs to be done.  If this is done properly then a pipeline will be heading to the junior high.  My girls played Little Dribblers for years either on mixed teams (boys and girls) or playing against one all girls team where a parent stacked one team against the other team.  The mixed teams saw the girls getting  pushed to the side not  getting the development they need and the stacked team stroked a parents ego that really couldn't coach but because they had the stacked team looked like coach of the year.  In the end my girls left the sport for softball or volleyball which broke my heart being a basketball guy.  They saw it was a waste of time and enjoyed the organization of softball/volleyball more because it was more competitive.
In order for us to grow girls basketball for the whole area we have to change the process at the grass roots level.  If this is done then we will see more girls going off to play college ball from all the schools and not just a few handful.  We will also see shooting, ball handling and other skills grow.  Last statement, Martins Mills has basketball figured out.  I went there this past summer visiting a buddy who's daughter is a stud on the high school team and saw their process.  The Little Dribblers is ran like I mentioned above and ever kid has a pass-code to the gym and can go shoot anytime of day.  Kids put their code in flip on the lights and get to work.  Now I know we don't all live in a town like Martins Mill but my point is their facilities are accessible for kids to get shots up.
    My two cents.

I do also, thats why I am able to say that the ones who do make gyms available are greatly outnumbered by the ones who dont especially for girls in our area. Or they say its gonna be open gym but lets be honest.....it is primarily for the boys.  Then the girls have to "get in where they fit in" which in that case some will but most wont.

No argument here.  In fact, I think little dribblers is the single biggest contributor to bad basketball in rural America.  Kids don't learn anything except bad habits.  Girls especially (with shooting) are often times not big enough or strong enough at very young ages to get the ball to the rim so they are encouraged to get it up there however they can.  That's so detrimental.  Small school basketball is a cesspool of 2 handed shooting, right handed dribbling, and stupid fouls / tie-ups. It's hard for me to even watch high school basketball anymore (locally) because I just stay mad the entire time.

Exactly, HJ hawks are successful, because Coach Fogo has the gym open 24/7, if not they all have access to the Nome Dome, most schools kids are lucky to have access once a week. Too many distractions these days to not shoot in the front yard.

My kid learned her left hand, because she would tell me she is bored in the 4th grade and I would throw her a basketball and make her dribble around the neighborhood with her left hand only!

Yesterday, she drove 2 hours to work with trainer for two hours and drive two hours back. Then came home ran to grocery store bought her food for the week and meal prepped for the week. She works out every single day to get stronger. She has come home after a tough physical game, changed clothes and went and worked out. She has lost 15 pounds since last season and looks faster, quicker, is jumping higher than she ever has.

I’m not talking about school coaching at all, the girls that are playing AAU ball and taking private lessons is what I’m talking about, and like Coach Schu mentioned in youth sports. If a High School coach is teaching and breaking down the shot, it’s too late.

A HS coach should be able to see if a shooter is struggling and make adjustments.
Little Dribblers in this area is the most popular youth basketball in this area and the leagues do not train the coaches, so you end up with a bunch of moms and dads teaching form shooting completely wrong. Then most private lessons focus so much attention on ball handling and getting to the rim and you get scorers from this and not shooters!

I wasn't implying that it's an excuse you were making, just a bad excuse for anyone to make.  Want to shoot better?  PUT IN THE TIME/EFFORT necessary.  Not just shots.  Proper shots.  Practice doesn't make perfect practice makes permanent.  You have to practice doing the right thing.

Piss poor excuse.  I didn't have a shooting machine and made more three pointers in the state than any kid that played.  Any classification.
Larry Bird didn't have a shooting machine either.. in fact.. it was because of him exactly why I was able to shoot so well.  He said one time when asked what needed to be done to become a great shooter like him: "Wake up before the sun comes up and shoot game shots until school starts, go in the gym during lunch and shoot game shots while your opponents eat, stay after practice and shoot game shots until it's time to eat/sleep.  Repeat everyday.  Do that, and you may be able to shoot as well as I can."

Shouldn't have never been given the opportunity to be the head coach at United in the first place.  He didn't have the energy to do the job and that came out of his mouth before he was given the job.  But he belonged to THAT church in Beaumont and one thing they do is look out for each other over there.  So happy for the kids on my side of the freeway to be moving on from this.  Hopefully the AD does what's best for the kids this time around because like i told him in conversation, he failed at that with his last hire.  Give our kids the same opportunity as you do the ones on the other side of the freeway...

Ey, no one danced around this at all.  It was stated on here many times that the current coaches will be utilized in matter what and many applicants walked away after being told that.  That's why I said BISD didn't handle it right the last time and hope they 'do it right' this go around...

Let's cut to the bone here. The real reason why Arthur was hired was because BISD did not want to let any current assistants go. They told applicants that they could not bring in their own staff. If hired, they had to work with the current assistant coaching staff. Most legit applicants then decided to withdraw their applications leaving BISD only a select few to hire from.
I will be curious to see what happens with this hire. Will someone outside be hired and will he be allowed to fill his own staff?

He would have been a better fit than the now 2nd time retiree but like Soulja said, if the Superintendant doesn't like you, you don't have a shot in hell.

He answered the church part for me and you'd be surprised bro how much influence goes on in Beaumont because of this church.
For the 2nd part of your question, nobody in particular.  AL didn't even apply for the position but they went and sought him out.  They THOUGHT he was the right man for the job.  I noticed that a lot of Ozen faithful thought so as well, unlike the Central alumni.  There was a list of 70 applicants (meaning people that actually wanted the job), with various amounts of experience from guys that would have been first time head coaches to guys that had won state titles.  I feel the majority of the guys on that list could have went 7-13 over the 2 year span but most would have done better and made the playoffs at least one year if not both.  I didn't start this topic but I'm glad the AL era is over with...

United needed more.  Yes, he did a good job being a disciplinary type coach and he did improve between his second year, but you can clearly see that the game passed him by. BISD made a bad decision turning away more qualified applicants initially.  Hopefully, they do it right this time.  I personally don't know Coach Lewis and have never interacted with him,  but @Alpha Wolf has and I believe him as far as lack of energy toward our kids.  Need someone with the fire, dedication , and energy for this program.  No excuse to not being in a decent coach.  Facilities are here.  Athletes are here.  ALso, the Ozen/Central debacle is pretty minimum now.  On to off-season  football and let's see how this pans out...
