  1. Ozen was able to prevent a lot of big yardage plays, but seems like Vidor was picking up first downs on second down quite a bit and methodically driving the ball. I know on their first two drives they had a quarter's worth of possession time.
  2. Yes, I'd be interested to see how many penalties the Pirates had tonight. Luckily they could overcome them. I think Ozen only had two or three calls. Defense has definitely shown improvement over last year. As for the offense, two weeks in a row with no punts or turnovers and that running back combo lit it up tonight. Even the second teamers playing in the 4th qtr. kept moving the ball. You could see that in the 3rd and 4th quarters, Coach Matthews had the QBs milking the 40 second clock every play.
  3. Penalties have definitely been an issue so far this year. The major penalties can be drive killers with this offense. Cost one TD and one very likely TD against Pasadena Memorial.
  4. Not as good as Montana, few are, but he's pretty good. Basically missed last year due to injury.
  5. Yeah, too bad he was injured so much of last year.
  6. Sometimes it's best to stick with first impressions Buddy! Lol.
  7. I certainly didn't expect a 3 TD win, by either team.
  8. Didn't see this score coming, but did see the opportunity for a Pirate win. When these two teams play, the game is usually up for grabs. Wonder if Central will have a new QB1 next week?
  9. Yeah, Pirates gotta play 4 quarters. Central will.
  10. The scoreboard came from a company in Florida wanting to get into the Texas market, I didn't hear anything about it being used, but that it was about 1/2 the price of what one would cost. ($55 K is what I have heard). The FL company is using this board as an example of their product for them to try to establish a foothold in Texas. Also I'm pretty sure the Booster Club raised most of, if not all the money, through fund-raisers/donations. Although $55K is a lot of money to raise, that figure is doable with enough hard work and dedication. IMO raising $1M for a turf field solely on fund-raising/donations would be out of reach, except maybe stretched over a few years, combined with VISD money.
  11. According to Chronicle stats Vidor averaged 7.96 yds per carry but had 12 penalties for 92 yds. Memorial had 4 first downs. I think they all came by penalty. 78 total yards. Nice improvement by the defense over last week but offense really needs to clean up the penalties.
  12. Maybe that Saturday practice in full pads got their attention.
  13. Looks like penalties on Vidor are helping keep the score down. Had one TD called back in first qtr., then two penalties moved them out of the red zone. One of which more than likely cost a TD as time ran out with the ball on the Memorial one. We'll see if they can overcome them and put up some more points. Gotta hold Memorial now though.
  14. Just goin' back and forth between Cowboys/Texans and this forum.
  15. Supposedly there were some personnel changes on both sides of the ball this week.
  16. According to this morning's Enterprise, Green is going to be announced tomorrow as the pitching coach at Lamar.
  17. You are correct in noting that this year's  Pirate team is not the same type team as the past couple of years.  Both those teams returned quite a few starters from the previous year.  As most know, Vidor had signifcant losses to graduation and is breaking in a new quarterback.  It will take longer this year for the team to get things together.
  18. +1 good post.  I think that if the Eagles had been challenged even one time during the regular season and playoffs, then they would have had a taste of adversity and maybe could have responded to the challenges of the CY game.  As it was, this game was the only one of the year that they were pushed at all, every other game was lopsided in Newton's favor. This game's adversity was something entirely new for the 2012 Eagles and trying to respond to something new in the state semi-finals is tough, even for a team as good as Newton.
  19. Look for several sophmores to be varsity players next year, nothing new there though as each season there are several sophs, not just on the roster, but playing.  don't have any names for you, but there will a bunch on new faces on defense. Simmons, Smith, Aull and hopefully Stevenson should be fine in the backfield, and as you said most of the line is back. Would be great if Hartmann returned.  I'm more concerned defensively next season so, I'm thinking more like a 6-4, 4-3 season which in itself may be one win optimistic.
