Respect for the post. I took the time and money to get proper training. Still have the materials that came with it. I watch occasionally to keep up in the hope I will return once daughter is done in high school.

I have received both forms of confrontations. Though the physical came from fans it doesn't matter to me. Schools can and should end ALL manner of improper behavior. There are ways to get the players, coaches and "fans" to back off.

It is also the chapters responsibility to provide adequately trained umpires. It is an obvious thing to me and most other "good" umpires who does not belong on the field.

Those are the obstacles I was referring to.

Beaumont Chapter has the best training program in place for this year that I have ever seen. It has been a struggle to get there but I know with the people in charge it will be done correctly and with passion. Now it is up to the members to use these resources to make themselves a better umpire.

@Silsbee92 - I am not 100% certain what "obstacles" you are speaking of unless it is the "verbal and physical confrontations you mention".  First, verbal confrontations will occur and while I will never, for the life of me, understand why the sport of baseball allows its coaches to confront officials the way it does, it is something that can be handled with a variety of techniques.  Secondly, I have not seen physical confrontations you speak of and if that occurs, ejection and larger issues with TASO & UIL upon receipt of my incident report on that coach.  Physical contact is a HUGE NO NO!!

The better umpires understand how to deal with this stuff.  You don't take it personally.  You understand why the coach is doing what he is doing BUT if you are sound with your mechanics and confident in your judgment, you simply let them vent, end the conversation and get back to the game of baseball.  Confident not cocky is the key here.

Totally understand where you are coming from.  It is more difficult to find good officials with the criticism giving by so many would-be experts...

Remove the obstacles and then you will have the numbers.

Very few will take the verbal and physical confrontations that come with high school baseball. Especially when they are new umpires and already know that even if they become "good" umpires it will be a baptism by fire at some schools.

I realize there is a lot of uncertainty about how Kountze will handle its pitching and if the offense will produce and if the defense will show up. In my estimation know one is off the grid of being replaced. Kountze has depth pitching still solid and not having a lights out guy on the bump will only remove the lackadaisical disposition our defense has had in the past. In regards to hitting...well we have hitters and if power is on the table for discussion: here it is; last year we had one homerun recorded by Ethan Franklin so one could come to the conclusion that power was a non contributor last year. It was and is our hope to develop a bit more this year and that's still on the table. As far as who is playing and who is not...I would prefer to let a kids decision to be made public by the kid when he either shows up Friday or not. Once that occurs we can talk about specifics of possible Varsity personnel and who did or did not come out. I personally am excited about getting started and hope all our returners choose to come back and make a contribution to another Kountze Lions DC and playoff run!

The Beaumont TASO Chapter is searching for new and experienced umpires.  Scrimmages, tournaments and regular season games are beginning soon.  If you are interested in joining the Chapter, with or without experience, we would like to visit with you.  Registration and State approval takes time so do not delay.

New umpires are provided a comprehensive weekly training from experienced TASO HS Umpires to include Rules Knowledge, Mechanics Knowledge and management of a HS Baseball game.  The schedule is flexible and you work the games based on your schedule and those levels you are most suited to handle based on evaluations from the TASO Chapter.

Visit www.tasobeaumont.org to complete the New Umpire Application found on the home page OR you are welcome to send me a private message for additional information.  Looking forward to seeing some new faces soon!

I recently took my son and another young man to a jr. college to try out for the baseball team. As I watched all the parents bring their sons to try out I noticed Coach Nelson from Silsbee had taken his own time to bring 3 or 4 guys to try out also. He was a pleasure to talk to and he has a burning desire to see all of his kids make it to the next level. I guess that burning desire is contagious because Silsbee definitely has a great baseball program. It was nice to see a Coach take time out during the summer to help those seniors and underclassmen get the opportunity to make their dreams come true. I wish more Coaches would do the same!

THUG - (n) - A cruel or vicious ruffian, robber, or murderer

Now I will start by saying this to anyone who was at the game, and feel like they had to voice that comment about my son.
One yes he was wrong for how far his temper took him, he is a kid and learning. Football is also a a physical and tempered
game. To suggest that my son is a THUG, you have my attention. I can tell you must don't KNOW Leon at all. If you know him you would know him from his smile, before football. Tell me what defines him as a THUG, then I will take you to a true THUG, and let you compare. However I came across a few names and trust and believe I will talk to you, I always said watch what you say when it comes to someone child. I can promise you this Leon knows nothing about the street life to be called a THUG, but DADDY lived it and changed his life over the years. In saying that sometimes it's good to know where you come from, so you can show a person the difference. So say what you want about DADDY, when I ask you the question my response will be quick-WATCH ME WORK. You will learn not to talk about anyone son again.

That didn't take long, (armchair coaching).

Problem isn't with offense only.  Silsbee lacks tackling ability.  Team score way to easily on the Tigers.

Coldspring:  30 carries for 190 yds of offense, TONIGHT.
Silsbee:  13 carries for -2 yds.  TONIGHT.  (650 lbs of humans that aren't moving anything, useless.)

Stop someone then maybe you can criticize the passing offense.

We have been spoiled by prolific offensive talented teams.  Be fair when you start judging.

They are young.  Put whoever you want in at QB, wont make a difference.

Silsbee92 reacted to Rake1 in 2014 class going to play @ next level??
Lots of factors in deciding either way. Nobody in their right mind would go play D1 at a school where the roster was full of Freshmen and Sophs at their particular position. Who wants to go sit and wear a hat just to say you were a D1 guy when you can go JUCO, get a ton of AB's and innings. If a D1 school has an opportunity for a freshman to come in and play right away then that's a different story all together. Scholarships and money are way different also. A 100% full ride to a D1 school is not a complete myth but it may as well be because they are so few and far between. JUCO on the other hand the full ride is far more common. Compare 2 years free school taking the same basic classes with a fraction of the students in the classroom and all of a sudden JUCO looks very appealing. Compare that financially to a 50% or 60% ride to a D1 and the dollars start adding up.

Each individual player has their own set of circumstances to deal with and different factors to influence their decision. No 1 path is the perfect one for everybody and each player ultimately has to make the best personal choice for themselves. JUCO baseball is far from being "minor league" because you have some serious talent playing at that level with an eye on the major league draft. Plenty of top quality players pass D1 schools in favor of JUCO just to be eligible for the draft earlier. Some big league arms lurking around in places you would never think about. Hop off the bus in "nowhere Nebraska" and walk in to a guy pumping 93 from the left side, talk about an eye opener!

When the College World Series starts check out the rosters and see how many JUCO transfers made each roster, it will surprise you. It's a blessing to play ball beyond high school and to have that opportunity help you get a good education is a win/win situation no matter who you are. Good luck to all these young men as they take that next step in both their life and baseball career.
