1. When and where were these comments supposedly made?  Just curious since many of these "Barbay put my team down" things are retroactive interpretations. i.e. Reporter:  "Coach you just won another game by a large margin, how does this make you feel about the playoff run ahead?" Barbay:  "Well, we havent beat anyone good yet so I would not get too excited." (or some approximation) Got turned into "Barbay said <My Team> was no good" became "Barbay said we...blah blah telephone game to infinity"
2. C-C is going to be an absolute beast in this district.

4. I wonder if all the teams knocked out by the local playoff runs lately are wondering if they need to switch to an offense like Newton or Kirbyville's? At the end of the day most any system is more or less viable.  It comes down to talent and execution.  Yes there are many spread teams right now..it is the trendy offfense.  A while back it was the wishbone.  A few years from now it will likely be something else. The hard thing about scrapping a system and starting over is you have to accept a few years to get it in place and teach the system to the kids.  It is hard for teams competing for titles to find the motivation to do that.  Euless Trinity is another fine example.  The coach there has spoken of this very thing.  It is basically crazy for a team like Kirbyville, back-to-back finalists, to change the entire system they are running.  On either side of the ball.
5. I find myself struggling for the words to describe the hilarity in this thread.
6.
99 DLS.. That team has or had 7+ players in the League (NFL)
You are probably thinking of the 2001 team/game, which has 4 players in the NFL (of a total of 6).  That year the final game they played was vs. Longbeach Poly which also sent 4 players to the NFL, for a total of 8 future NFL players in a single high school game.
7. I think some people honestly believe posts on a forum will make a difference in the outcome of the game.
8. Congrats to DF and good luck the rest of the way.  The better team advanced.
9.
From my reading of the article and the suit, it seems to me that TASO would rather completely destroy extracurricular activities in Texas than allow the UIL to do it's job.....I guess we see who has the best interests of Texas children at heart....it's certainly not TASO......
How is collecting fees from officials the UIL's job?  Look at it this way:  Say the UIL suddenly decided they were going to require all bus drivers that transport student athlete to or from games to register with the UIL and pay the UIL a fee.  Is that OK?  How about scoreboard operators?  PA announcers?  Gate attendants?  Groundskeepers?  The guy that installs sprinklers?
10.
I believe Daingerfield's correct offensive stats are these: Rushing:  2959 yards;  228 yards/game Passing:  1696 yards;  130 yards/game Total:  4655; 358 yards/game Those are the stats through all 13 games.
Quite impressive.
11. Usually (but not always) when negative passing yards are reported it is net passing yards.  That is yards passing minus yards lost attempting to pass. An example: Opponent has 309 yards passing and was sacked 2 times for a total of 10 yards in losses.  Net passing yards for the team would be 299, though the QB would still be listed as having 309.  (These are the actually the totals for the Cowboys on Thanksgiving) This is actually the "correct" way to report total passing yards for the team.  For this reason it is common for the QB to have more passing yards than the team does (if they get sacked just once this happens). It gets confusing for high school because most of the "stat guys" are fans with a pad and pen that just do their best to replicate box scores they see in the paper without bothering to learn the "proper" methods.  (For the record I am not disparaging them, simply making a truthful statement.  They are willing to do the stats where most are not..you take the good with the bad.) It is not uncommon for there to be variation as reported by newspapers either.  For example the Beaumont Enterprise is not accurate for Newton as it has no stats for the CC game in week 0.
12.
I don't know about the players, but it certainly seems some of the fans think Newton is outgunned in this contest.  I will tell you that as a Daingerfield fan this game makes me a little nervous.  I believe Daingerfield is the better team, but as someone else said, the best team does not always win.  Newton is a very good team and very well coached.  They have all the incentive in the world to be "up" for this game, because Daingerfield knocked them out of the playoffs last year.  I would be interested in getting someone's honest opinion about how Newton matches up with Daingerfield.  Daingerfield is big and fast and loaded at the skilled positions.  Daingerfield's defense is as strong or stronger than it was last year.  They create turnovers (10 takeaways in 3 playoff games) and score off those turnovers (6 defensive touchdowns in 3 playoff games).  I believe Newton will be able to run the ball some and maybe hit a big pass or two off of the play action.  Daingerfield blitzes a lot, and sometimes they can get caught in an all out blitz, like the 75 yard toucdown pass EC scored on.  Noone was home in the middle of the field and it was just pitch and catch.  But, they also create a lot of negative plays (tackles for losses, sacks, turnovers).  Sort of a high risk, high reward defense.  Anyone with thoughts on how Newton will match up?
You have it pretty much right.  Daingerfield has two edges that makes them the better team in my mind.  One is relatively minor, one is potentially huge.  The first edge is size.  This is not a big of a deal as Newton historically is a bit on the small size as compared to the other teams at the same level particularly on the line.  This is minor though as they also tend to be quicker and use that as an advantage which tends to even out.  Those smaller linemen can generally move well and you see lots of pulling blocks, traps, defensive stunts, etc. Now the other is consistency on defense.  Newton has a new DC this year and the D has not consistently performed at the level Newton is accustomed to, that may or may not be the DC.  At times the defense has looked very good and at times very sloppy.  If the sloppy version shows up this week it will be a long day.  The good news for Eagle fans is the D has tended to play to the competition.  All said this is likely the key to the outcome of the game. In terms of the matchup:  Newton will be successful in the ground game.  Barring fumbled snaps or the like this is an area where Newton excels on sheer execution.  They'll also likely have a few big play action passes for long gains.  The passing game is not as dangerous as what DF saw in this game last year.  The same quality is not there at the WR position. As for fans that think Newton is outgunned...  Yep many of us happen to be well educated on football and have watched our Eagles through enough deep playoff runs to be able to look at things with an honest, critical eye.  We've watched Newton beat teams that were better than them.  We've watched teams we were better than send us home too.  We understand that is championship level football.  Being good is not enough.  I also thought DF was the better team last year.  But anyone with even a small amount football knowledge and looks at that game objectively (I think based on your posts you fall in this group) knows that the margin could have EASILY been 14 points different in either direction.  I think this year's matchup is similar.  DF comes in as the favorite but the outcome is far from a foregone conclusion.  I think DF has played at this level long enough not to make the mistake of taking any team in the quarterfinals for granted and especially not one like Newton.  My pick is DF but it will once again be a ballgame.
13. The only thing Kirbyville needs to do "different" is win the last game of the season.  Go Wildcats.
14. I know when I played at Newton Coach Barbay had no problem telling us when we played a team that was better than us.  He'd tell us in what way they were better and how we were going to go about beating them anyway.
15. Jasper's Sean Weatherspoon was first team all Big 12 at LB for a second year in a row.
16. It won't be until after Kirbyville and Newton are both done.
17. Oh I'm not knocking it. In fact, I LIKE the concept quite a bit.  I've just never seen it happen before.
18. I've never seen coach of the year given to an assistant before.  Interesting.
19.
You know, I read through this whole thread and had so many things to say to defend my Daingerfield Tigers but when some Einstein comes on here and says we have only been good for the last 10 years and some other rocket doctor questions our tradition I lost the desire to even try to communicate with these people.  It is very apparent that you two know nothing about high school football beyond your own little backyards.  To all you others, true Daingerfield fans do not question the traditions of other schools because our tradition means so much to us.  Will we beat Newton, maybe yes and maybe no but we will be in that fight.  Good luck this week Newton with LK and if we both win we will see you guys in two weeks. Daingerfield Tigers 2009 Drive For Five
Good post.  Hope to see you guys in 2 weeks.
20.
I see that Hotrodg has placed troll markings so we're offending the politically correct, I guess. I don't know if he is referring to me or Arptiger or who. I didn't even know there was a troll police. I thought they lived under bridges in fairy tales, but they could exist somewhere like the bigfoot or something. It's amazing what you can learn on wikipedia.org. Now that's off topic.
I was referring to Arptiger.  Just a little helping hand to the folks who seemed to be able to discern what was really going on with that guy.  My guess is he is a SETX guy amusing himself by stirring you all up.
21. jjspeed who is claiming Arp and DF are cupcakes? I personally think DF is the top 2A team in the state.  I think Newton is the only team they'll see in the playoffs before the Finals with even a chance and DF will (and should) be a heavy favorite. Something tells me that no matter what a couple trolls may post (on whatever board) DF has enough experience with Newton at this point not to enter any game with the Eagles overconfident.
