What's it hurting?  Just curious..
As Syndrome said, "Everyone can be super! And when everyone's super, [laughs maniacally] no-one will be".

On another level the purpose of the playoffs is to provide a method to find the best team, the best, anything that delays that process is just foolishness. There will be variables along the way, and some exceptions to rules where a 1-x or 2-x team may win a game or two, but the odds of that team impacting the FINAL outcome of finding THE best team is nil. Heaven forbid that a team with a legitimate shot suffers an injury along the way that may really have an impact while playing "extra" games that wouldn't exist if 3 and 4 teams per district weren't in the playoffs.

If you don't subscribe to that philosophy and believe the playoffs are a good way to expose more young men and women to a "playoff atmosphere" then I guess it may make sense, but lets not delude ourselves into believing its about more than anything but money for the ones who decide, or that thats necessarily healthy. And in this day of stretched resources, for schools and parents, that really doesn't make much sense.

And in the conspiracy department, maybe its UIL's way to equalize the playing field for the start of basketball so nobody gets a "big jump" while the competition is out playing deep into the playoffs..I'm just rambling, I don't really know anything about it, its just my opinion..

I think Coldspring should pull their starters out after the 1st qtr. Keep their players healthy and ready for the playoffs. I got to see these Trojans last year against Carthage and they have the talent to make it to the big dance again. Wishing the Trojans the best!!
Honest question, don't you think the starters would do better to play a good portion of the game? Unless theres an existing injury don't you run the risk of not letting the starters get enough playing time, even in the NFL guys want to play when the matter is decided. I know theres something to protecting against injury, but there are more efficient ways to do that, and I'm sure you want to get your reserves some reps but I think pulling starters that early could do more harm than good.

Not to sidetrack the thread, obviously CS rolls. Will be interesting to see if Liberty's offense will eclipse Tarkington's district high 8 points against the Trojan D :o. Now let the "3rd string defense late in game" posts start, lol. It is what it is, the question is when the starters come out will Liberty make the end zone? Or maybe before?

I wish Coach Carpenter nothing but the best... What a great guy and very knowledgable about football.... Athletic ability does account for something.... Let's end this post out of respect for the kids and a great guy that are trying to build a program.

Why end the thread? We did we say that was wrong?
I guess we made the mistake of observing and stating what was so obvious that it should not have been observed or stated, in other words we were not polite or politically correct, a trait that I've noticed many SETX posters lack  :o, I guess I'm in the wrong place  :-[.

Ok I think this is Homecoming or not? I seen the lady selling the mums on the corner this morning so should be soon. Men in black keep getting better by the week and think the Kpark game indicated some week areas hence were addressed.  Knew this team was young but at the same time hungry and showing. So with that said who you got?
you mean to win? thats not even a discussion unless it includes at least 30 points given...it's homecoming better make it 40. why don't teams schedule homecoming games to be competitive?

Ive been looking at this topic for the past few days and I finally have to say something. It is really hard for me to understand why so many teachers and coaches are losing their jobs. These are the people who spend a great deal of time with our youth guiding and directing them. Teaching them to do their best and not to give up when times get rough. These are in my opinion 2 of the most important lessons anyone can learn. With all the cuts going on, what is this saying to the seniors this year and to those who graduated last year who plan to become future teachers and coaches.
these folks don't have to be laid off, they'd just have to work without pay, or their co-workers would have to take pay cuts to make room under the new budget constraints. i completely agree with you that its a travesty, and without turning this into a political thread suffice it to say that our illustrious leaders are to blame for lack of financing to keep them on.

What are your thoughts on High School kids throwing 100 pitches or more in a game? I was basically told I was ignorant for speaking up about this. Anyone in 19-4A remember what happened to Smesney from Dayton when he got to Angelina after throwing 100+ on several outings? Why take a chance with a kids future? Should parents not be able to speak up about the welfare of their children or others?

    not if they're hurtin'...

Who take it and why?  Seems like the winner is in the driver seat in the district.

Got to assume it will be Stallings (Splendora) vs West or DeBerry (Huffman).

    Good luck to both teams.
Didn't Stallings throw alot of pitches Tuesday in the win over Coldspring? Either way, Splendora is scrappy, can they give Huffman a game in Splendora? After two blowout wins might the Falcons take one for granted?

This statement is not not intended to create controversy but awareness.  Without a doubt, the world is a imperfect environment, therefore, our children need to be prepared to deal with adversity and less than ideal situations.

School and athletics are a practice for the real world that lies beyond school and sports (employment). As a former coach and a current educator I have diligently tried to instill the following qualities in my kids: Integrity, Humbleness, Loyalty, give a 100% and never give up.

Also, as a parent I have tried to always back the teacher or coach even if the situation is less than ideal.  On the other hand, if I thought my sons health were in jeopardy I would immediately intervene. Otherwise, I advise my kids to respect authority and if they thought it was bad enough go speak with the coach or teacher themselves.

I have many times bitten my tongue enduring a long season. Consequently, I truly believe if I publicly or at home bashed the coach or teacher then my sons would never respect that individual. If respect is never established then there will be conflict which results in hard feelings then discontent.

Life lesson: If my son goes to work and he is unhappy with his boss for whatever reasons, he has been taught there are 2 options: Find employment elsewhere or endure, adapt and conform.

It does not take a legend for our kids to be winners. If they give their best ,learn to adapt, no matter the situation they will be better in long run.

In conclusion, be careful for what wish for because change does not always guarantee happiness.

Bluedove, I have heard that you are a very good person but I feel the need to stand for our profession. No hard feelings and I hope to meet in person and have meaningful conversation.
jetty i agree with MOST of what you're saying, especially, to paraphrase, "the devil you know" aspect. but there comes a time when you'd rather take a chance with the devil you don't know. in real life people DO have the option of finding different employment if they can't cope with their boss, or perhaps address the situation with HIS boss. but kids can't really do that at school so it puts them in somewhat of an unfair disadvantage. thats why it's incumbent on the administrations to make wise choices about who handles our children in the first place. i'm speaking in generalities as you were, i'm not calling a particular coach "the devil" or saying anybody was doing a bad job.

you're right kids do need to learn to adapt and "conform" (to a lesser degree), but there are limits, and again they don't really have the option of "shopping around". people shouldn't have to uproot their lives and families to get away from a bad situation, in fact, UIL specifically regulates that....just saying.

yeah it would i think, they didn't let garbage fouls go, they called what was obvious without getting ticky tack and kept the game under control, unlike most games this year where the refs let it get out of hand early and then start throwing techs out like candy in a parade. i didn't see any tempers flare which usually happens when they just let the kids "play".

there were bonus free throws in both halves on both sides so it wasn't like they weren't calling anything. they called traveling when it was traveling, the only thing they let go was kids slapping the backboard on a shot but i'm not even sure thats a violation these days.
Wow!  Ref's that call the game as they actually see it!!! Incredible!  And not letting any biases creep into their calls.

Maybe that can become the norm rather than the exception.... I don't know.... come to think of it, it will never work.  ;)
