  1. Heck of a first gig for a young coach but perhaps as big is the announcement that Steve Lineweaver comes out of retirement to "assist", i.e. mentor him : [Hidden Content] SLC is a hot mess right now, it's a bold move that will either look like pure genius or pure stupidity. I believe A.D. Allman was reassigned pre-hiring so unless someone other than the interim A.D. takes the helm....well, like I said right now it seems to be a hot mess....
  2. They've had some good teams since the 90's, but this year they were young with yet another new coach, only a shadow of even the teams from the last 2 years. Whole district was very weak comparatively. Yates is Yates, I'm surprised it wasn't worse.
  3. Don't need lights for Saturday games. Jasper is first rate for sure, long drive for both clubs. Crosby has built a fantastic facility but they're probably booked up I'd guess....
  4. Yep, Huffman had prom tonight game played at 4.
  5. Actually maybe that wasn't a change to start the 8th and it was a pitch count thing..
  6. Odd (to me) pitching change in the bottom of 8th for HJ, new pitcher to start 8th, faced 1 batter, got a ground out then pitching change. Both righties so not an "advantage" there, just seemed kind of strange, but then there's alot about the game that was strange. Another good outing for Horn's pitchers who did a great job. Best I can tell that puts Horns in the driver's seat in 23, good job boys.
  7. That's what I thought, but saw it called tonight just bouncing off the top back toward the lane creating a change of possession (and a no-bucket after it was rebounded and put back) at a critical point in a game that ended up being a 2 point game. I've seen it several times this season. Do refs have to go to training or even read the rule book?
  8. Yeah, it's a dumb rule, mostly for the reason you stated, it's called inconsistently. It SHOULD be one of those spirit of the rule things, is the player trying to get up with the ball? Is the player trying to advance the ball? Somebody will quote the rule song and verse, but at the end of the day you're right it's just not called with any degree of consistency.
  9. Not true in all cases, that sounds like ref speak for excuse to call whatever. A bad call is a bad call. I personally think they ought to eliminate about half the rules or simply them to the point of being "obvious" to promote consistency. Traveling is a good example, who cares if a player shuffles a pivot foot 3/4 inch before they dribble? Sure if they just start walking then it's obvious, but I see this "shuffle" travel called all the time, it's petty and senseless. Then same ref will let hand checks go all night. Ball hitting top of backboard (not fixture). Is it out of bounds or not? Ball OVER clearly is, but bouncing on top and back in play is unclear.
  10. Huffman 59 Tarkington 57 Good tight game all night on Longhorns senior night, congrats to Falcons on the undefeated district championship.
  11. Liberty 54 Tarkington 53 Liberty has something more than pride to play for Tuesday...
  12. I agree the coaches did as well if not better. I've seen "bad calls" in years past, it happens, but it had an air of professionalism. This year it's a whole new level of goofy. In the varsity game an official took his whistle out and explained a non call to a player while he was dribbling a live ball, leaned over to him from a distance, haven't seen that since little dribblers. I don't have a problem with officials talking to players, it was just so odd the way it went down. Two or three times this year I've seen a time-out "awarded" when it wasn't called, just a coach shouting out a play call. This is where somebody says "if you don't like the way they do it put on a uni and do it yourself"....nope, didn't sign up for that, don't get paid for that. It's a paying gig, not volunteer. They can't be perfect but they can be professional, somewhat consistent, and unemotional about it. I think the coaches were those things even though I was a little worried one of them might fall out, I think he was all right afterward though. Hope the young man that was injured makes a speedy recovery.
  13. HJ 51 Tark 44 Or maybe 54-47, it was 7 points, not nearly as close as that though.
  14. Yep, Indians led by I think 14 late 3rd early 4th and did something I thought at the time might bite them, they slowed it way down a little early which did 2 things. It seemed to take them out of their groove (they only scored 48, very few in the 4th) and it allowed Horns to catch their breathe, then Horns made some athletic plays and it was a game by the 2:00 mark. Horns have the bodies, they often just lack intensity and consistency, when they put it out there they're not pushovers.
  15. Cleveland 71 Tarkington 49 New coach in Cleveland looks to be doing an excellent job of creating a balanced, disciplined, patient squad, should be very competitive in district.
  16. It really was that bad but...just come to another Tarkington game, they seem to attract them. It was not by far the worst I've seen. It didn't seem to be out of malice or bias, they blew several on both sides, but it's baffling to watch....
  17. Sounds fair (sarcasm). I've seen the Horns play, they are such highly aggressive "jerks" as I believe one of the opposing coaches referred to a couple of the players (it's ok, they've heard worse) so it's no surprise that a couple of them nearly doubled their foul count for the year. It just makes them tougher to play in homer reffed games like this, they'll need that down the line. No excuse for losing, they should have won even with the obvious bias. They didn't play well, need to toughen up mentally, good experience....won't help those who "benefit" from homers when they play in a game called with some balance.
  18. Sorry, didn't realize I had clicked on Girls Basketball link, that was boys score...not sure about girls...
  19. Not sure what's going on in CS, not alot of players and very young team. Horns are definitely on the uptick this year but CS is not the CS of recent years....
