SLC Rivalry Game Moving to Reliant Stadium

Recommended Posts

Announcement coming next week...

The annual "Battle of the Piney Woods" is headed for the big city.

Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston and the Houston Texans have mutually agreed for the annual SFA-Sam Houston football rivalry to be played at Reliant Stadium in Houston, starting next season.

SFA president Dr. Baker Pattillo told the school's board of regents about the agreement Monday.

A press conference will be held with SFA, Sam Houston and Texans officials Tuesday at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

It's a good idea.  Both SHSU and SFA have a lot of alumni in the Houston area.  The game will probably draw better at Reliant Stadium than at their home stadiums so it makes sense.

Some thoughts...

1) The Texans promotions arm is involved and this means pub for the Kats/Jacks during Texans games and around Reliant Stadium. That sure as heck won't hurt!

2) The Texans/Reliant Stadium had to 'buy' this game away from the schools. Both schools typically do well for attendance when the games are at their stadium, compared to most contests. If both schools will be making money each year (not just when they would be the home team) and are making more when they are the home team - can't complain. Finances drive the market!

3) Both schools have large alum bases in the Houston area. Parking prices at the stadium will stink, but got to figure they'll put 15-20k at the game (that's the avg for TSU-PVA&M). That's as said - more than they would've gotten at any venue.

They will look stupid with only 9,000 fans at the game.

You're beginning to sound like TT with that bitterness. ;)

You're already sounding kookoo with that statement. Not surprised, aggies.

I could care less about SHSU/SFA. I just don't see it being successful at reliant. SFA vs Texas Tech, yes. SHSU vs UT, yes.

SFA vs SHSU, Nope....

Basically only the students go to the home games of SFA and SHSU, so holding these games in Houston should get more of their alumni to them and bring more attention to series.  I don't think they are expecting big crowds for these games, more like 15K to 20K like TT said, and that would be considered successful.

In a way I have to agree with UNLV - whether it is 9,000 or 20,000... It will still feel like you are playing in an empty place.  I understand the financial benefit but seems like playing at U of H or Rice would be better suited.  Especially since there will be no alcohol sales allowed.

Rice does not want to play the SLC after Nicholls beat them and while UH did play Northwestern State this year, they are taking on a full diet of SWAC schools unless there is an SLC ripe for the picking.

By doing a conference game with a pay day, we are still opening the schedule to have an FBS game (SHSU has Baylor next year) in which we can reap profits. Figure we are getting $250k-300k for Baylor at the very least. Interested to know the figure on the Reliant Stadium game, but can't imagine it being less than $75-100k, which is 2x what we'd get if Appy State bought a home game from us. Throw in the pub - bam!

Only students go to SHSU home games? That's incorrect.

We're a basketball school and 10% of our student body shows up once school is in session come January. Football games, not so much. The SHSU-SFA game and Homecoming are a bit different - but for the most part, the games are driven by alumni and the community.

If alumni is not supporting either team now, especially CSA member Huntsville SHSU, they won't at Reliant. 9,000 tops...

Aside from the financial benefit of Reliant buying out the game, I don't see this being a big draw. Hopefully Reliant is paying for buses to get students from Nacogdoches and Huntsville to the game...and hopefully both teams have competitive records going into the game. Otherwise, I see this as being about as big of a draw as the SLC Basketball Tourney being held in Houston.  ???

    • We'll see. I don't trust us.
    • Starting pitching has been shaky the last few weeks due to some injuries outside of Hagen Smith.  He goes tomorrow, so y’all should be fine
    • Manchin may get it but any mention of the radical left that wanted to get rid of the filibuster and end almost 220 years of history because the Democrats are mad?  The House and Senate are obviously different legislative bodies with entirely different election processes and rules for a reason. The House can vote on laws with a simple majority vote. The Senate put rules in place that it would make it much tougher to pass laws. Laws should be difficult to pass. The Senate is often the holdup of the right and left. It takes 60 votes to break the filibuster so any law will almost certainly require agreement at least in part, from opposing sides of an issue. Because they can’t get laws passed, the radical left is like a baby having a tantrum and wants to change over 200 years of history and make it potentially ridiculously easy to pass laws. I have seen current poll maps and it is possible for the Republicans to sweep into complete power in November but by the tiniest margin. That would possibly mean that a single vote margin in both houses could enact what you might call the radical right laws. There would be nothing that the Democrats could do to stop any legislation whatsoever if the left (they are all radical, minus Manchin) got their filibuster rule changed.  That is where the current filibuster comes into play as any new law would require several Democrats to agree with the majority Republicans and vice versa.  Do you want the potential for your radical right to have free rein as the radical left wants by killing the filibuster or is the radical left just as (if not more) dangerous? Let’s see if we have a history in this area? Oh yeah, the Democrats changed the rules in the Senate to allow federal judges to not have to overcome the filibuster. Obama was not getting his federal judge nominations passed and being angry, they changed the rules instead of nominating more moderate justices. They were warned that it would come back to bite them. They didn’t care and chose the nuclear option to change the rules. Oops! Any guess how Trump got all of his Supreme Court nominees passed against strong Democrat opposition? The Democrats got rid of the filibuster for federal judges after another tantrum   So when you are so worried about the radical right, are you equally concerned in what the radical left is always doing by changing rules and history which were put into place just for situations like we are in? So while Manchin gets it, what about his other 50 colleagues (49 + Harris)?  What concerns you more, Abbott and Paxton or the Democrats who want to make it to where if the Republicans do take over, they can go wild… at least in your mind?
    • MODS please remove that ISD twitter link! I had no idea it would copy the whole posting. I only highlighted the portion about the venue change. Sorry about that!
