HOUSTON -- Steve Francis isn't shortening his return home.

The Rockets' veteran point guard agreed to return to the team on Wednesday, picking up the player option on the final year of his contract.

Francis' plans to return to the Rockets bolsters the team's backcourt heading into next season, giving the team four point guards under contract. The former All-Star can also play the off-guard spot.

Francis had his season with the Rockets cut short after undergoing knee surgery in February to repair a torn quadriceps tendon. The team is optimistic that he'll be able to return in time for training camp.

Before the 2007-08 season, the guard signed with the Rockets as a free agent in hopes of returning to his All-Star-caliber form in the city where he began his career. Francis played five seasons in Houston before the Rockets traded him to Orlando in 2003.

Unfortunately, injuries spoiled his homecoming. Francis appeared in 10 games, averaging 5.5 points and 3.0 assists before being sidelined by the knee injury.
