Little, Lady Bobcats crush Kountze

Gabe Pruett

The Orange Leader

ORANGEFIELD — Even after a 77-48 victory over Kountze, Orangefield Coach Chris Jost is still looking for more consistency out of the Lady Bobcats.

There were spurts of turnovers and missed lay-ups yet Orangefield (3-1) did enough to keep Kountze (2-1) at bay.

Senior Kaylin Little poured in a game-high 38 points to go with five rebounds and seven steals and several times showed a ton of hustle which Lady Bobcats’ basketball is known for.

“I’m very excited after a victory like this,†Little said. “We didn’t play good defense in the first half but we started to there at the end.â€

The Orangefield defense forced 35 turnovers from Kountze who got a team-high 17 points from Kayla Hargraves.

Several Lady Bobcats had great nights on defense as Olivia Wagner had five steals and Aimee Scales Marissa Wyatt each finished with three. Scales had eight points and four rebounds while Jessica Weldon added six points and three boards. Wagner also had five points and five rebounds.

Orangefield took a 14-7 lead into the second period and opened the frame on a seven-point run as Little scored five and Laura Riddick knocked down two free throws making it 21-7.

Riddick finished the night with 10 points, three assists, three rebounds and five steals.

“Laura Riddick played a very solid game tonight,†Jost said. “Even at the end of the game she was diving and getting to loose balls.â€

Kountze’s Shaquadra Smith stopped the Lionettes bleeding with a bucket before Orangefield went on to score the game’s next six points.

In the second the Lady Bobcats opened a 29-12 lead only to see the Lionettes got on a 6-0 spurt to close to within 29-18.

The Lady Bobcats closed out the first half on a 6-0 run taking a 35-18 lead into the half.

“We finished strong and really that is what we are looking for,†Jost said. “We made enough plays all game to stay ahead. The game really was a lot closer than the score. We have to become more consistent on both sides of the ball.â€

Orangefield retained its lead in the third but Kountze outscored the Lady Bobcats 15-14.

The fourth period was all Orangefield as the Lady Bobcats went off for 28 points, Little scoring 12 in the game’s final eight minutes.

The Lady Bobcats do not have much time to rest as they will play host to Nederland on Monday before heading to the 20th Annual Lovelady Girls Thanksgiving Basketball Tournament.

“I think we have a pretty good team this year,†Little said. “We still have a lot to learn and help teach the underclassmen. That is what these non-district games are for.â€
