2019 FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS

SHELBYVILLE DRAGONS

2018 Record: 5-6 Overall, 4-1 District

District 12-2A-I Runner Ups

The Shelbyville Dragons didn't exactly start the 2018 season with a bang as the Dragons lost their first 3 games of the year and limped into district with a 1-4 mark.  However, the Dragons hit the accelerator going 4-1 in district play with their only loss coming to district champ and eventual state semifinalist San Augustine.  Expect more of the same from the Dragons as Head Coach David Benbow welcomes ten returning starters on offense and seven returning defensive starters in an effort to again battle for a district title and have a long stay in the playoffs.

Head Coach: David Benbow

Assistant Coaches: Kyle Stewart (Defensive Coordinator), Zach Hubbard (Offensive Coordinator), Michael Bill Taylor, Joe Boykins, David Schmitt

Offense:

Ten starters return to the Shelbyville spread in 2019.  Junior quarterback L.D. Coleman returns to lead the Dragon offense but look for sophomore Jakory Standley to see time behind center as well.  Senior running back Jaylon Brinson (1st team all-district) will lead the Dragon rushing attack but expect sophomore running back A.J. Cartwright to also see some time in the backfield.  Senior H-Back Trevor Jackson will return to plow the road as well as figure in the Shelbyville passing game.  Senior receiver Marcus Horton and junior receivers Kel Wilson and Jarod Perez return to key the Dragon passing attack with contributions from Coleman and Standley.  Junior linemen Keyshawn McColister (1st team all-district) and Caleb Ridgeway and sophomore linemen Trey Cartwright (2nd team all-district) and Eli Taylor (2nd team all-district) return to an offensive line which will also include junior Grady Clay, who will also see time at tight end.

Defense:

Seven starters return to the Shelbyville odd front defense in 2019. Defensive ends Clay and Cartwright (both 1st team all-district) return to the defensive line return to the line along with senior defensive tackle Trevor Jackson (2nd team all-district) and sophomore Dawson Windham.  Expect junior Hagan Crumpton to also see time on the line.  The Dragons will be young at linebacker as Standley and sophomore Dylan Robbins will step in.  Junior cornerback Wilson (1st team all-district), senior safety Marcus Horton (2nd team all-district) and Coleman (at safety) all return to a Dragon secondary which will also include sophomore Talarrion Lister.

Special Teams:

Horton will do the place kicking for Shelbyville while Coleman will do the punting.  Wilson will be the primary kick returner.

    • but will he be doing contact football drills mid-season?
    • That was an awesome video!  I feel so proud of these young men.  They proved the doubters wrong.  Bellville should be proud, too.  I know it didn't end like they had hoped, but we've been there, so we can definitely empathize with them.  Great season, Brahmas!
    • Meh.. Everyone knows this. The kid that got injured wasn't lifting weights. Supposedly he was hit with a helmet in his elbow. In my opinion the kid shouldn't have been put in that situation. AD should've told the Varsity baseball players to sit that one out. I have no issues with the lifting or conditioning. However, anytime helmets/pads are on there is a higher risk of injury. This AD showed a total lack of respect for HIS baseball program.
    • Maybe.. however..  Many athletic director / head football coach have lost their job despite the athletic program as a whole being successful.. if the football team struggles.  On the other hand, when football teams are doing great but the rest of the program stinks.. AD/HFC still keeps their job. WOS.  Newton. .. programs as a whole were fairly weak during those many years of football power and very few people even knew it.  Or cared. Yet, AD/HFC kept their jobs for years. Meanwhile, I remember an AD/HFC at Barbers Hill lost his job after every program in the school won district championships and even had several team sports (baseball, softball, girls hoops, etc.) making runs at state.  But the football team was mediocre.  Fired. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that perception is reality.  And the perception is that your athletic program can suck as long as football wins.. it doesn't matter how strong the athletic program is if football sucks.
