2019 FOOTBALL TEAM PREVIEWS

DIBOLL LUMBERJACKS

2018 Record: 9-2 Overall, 5-1 District

District 11-3A-I Runner ups

The Diboll Lumberjacks definitely did thrive from finally playing teams closer to their own size in District 11-3A-I as the Lumberjacks dropped only one district game en route to a district runner up finish in 2018.  Head Coach Blake Morrison expects much more of the same as a veteran group (8 starters on each side of the ball) returns to compete for a district title and a long stay in the Class 3A, Division II playoffs.

Head Coach:  Blake Morrison

Assistant Coaches: Steve Day (Defensive Coordinator/Safeties), Danny Montgomery (Defensive Line), Stanley Scott (Defensive Line), Adrian Vasquez (Linebackers), Luis Rios (Outside Linebackers/Running Backs), V.J. Bunner (Cornerbacks), Jason Taylor (Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks), Chance Johnson (Special Teams Coordinator/Offensive Line), Orlando Estrada (Offensive Line), James Davis (Receivers)

Offense:

Eight starters return to the Diboll offense in 2019.  Senior quarterback Dylan Maskunas (2nd team all-district) will trigger the Lumberjack multiple pro offense.  Joining him in the backfield will be senior running back Daris McMillan (1st team all-district) with sophomore running back Jaylon McMillan and senior H-back Hunter Smith also seeing time there.  Senior wide out Javaughn Luster (2nd team all-district) will lead a receiver group that will also include senior receivers Demaria Cook and Hagan Pierce.  Senior Ricardo Harrison (1st team all-district) will lead an offensive line which will also feature junior Kristian Mireles.

Defense:

Eight starters also return to the Diboll defense in 2019.  Sophomore defensive end Jeremiah Gums (11-3A-I Defensive Newcomer of the Year) will lead a defensive line which will feature senior nose guard Ethan Mendoza and senior defensive end Hezekiah Freeman. Senior linebacker Hayden McLeroy (1st team all-district) and senior outside linebacker Agustine Martinez will lead the Lumberjack receiver corp.  Senior strong safety Jermiah Settler (1st team all-district) and senior cornerback Tyveon Willams (2nd team all-district) will anchor a Diboll secondary that will also include feature senior free safety Chase Tamez and Jaylon McMillian.

Special Teams:

Senior Adrian Garcia will handle the place kicking duties while Maskunas will do the punting.  Kick return duties will be finalized during summer practice.

    • That was an awesome video!  I feel so proud of these young men.  They proved the doubters wrong.  Bellville should be proud, too.  I know it didn't end like they had hoped, but we've been there, so we can definitely empathize with them.  Great season, Brahmas!
    • Meh.. Everyone knows this. The kid that got injured wasn't lifting weights. Supposedly he was hit with a helmet in his elbow. In my opinion the kid shouldn't have been put in that situation. AD should've told the Varsity baseball players to sit that one out. I have no issues with the lifting or conditioning. However, anytime helmets/pads are on there is a higher risk of injury. This AD showed a total lack of respect for HIS baseball program.
    • Maybe.. however..  Many athletic director / head football coach have lost their job despite the athletic program as a whole being successful.. if the football team struggles.  On the other hand, when football teams are doing great but the rest of the program stinks.. AD/HFC still keeps their job. WOS.  Newton. .. programs as a whole were fairly weak during those many years of football power and very few people even knew it.  Or cared. Yet, AD/HFC kept their jobs for years. Meanwhile, I remember an AD/HFC at Barbers Hill lost his job after every program in the school won district championships and even had several team sports (baseball, softball, girls hoops, etc.) making runs at state.  But the football team was mediocre.  Fired. I'm not saying you're wrong, just that perception is reality.  And the perception is that your athletic program can suck as long as football wins.. it doesn't matter how strong the athletic program is if football sucks.
