National Lollipop Day
Today is National Lollipop Day! Lollipops come in dozens of different shapes, sizes, and flavors. You can make traditional hard-candy lollipops with just four simple ingredients—sugar, water, corn syrup, and the flavoring of your choice.

Culinary historians believe that the lollipop (or at least some form of it) has been around since the prehistoric era. Early humans often enjoyed honey on a stick as a delicious treat. No one really knows how the modern-day lollipop was invented, but we do know how it got its name. George Smith, the owner of a small American candy store, came up with the sweet's name. In the early 1900s, he called the candy a "lollipop" after his favorite racehorse—Lolly Pop.

National Tug of War Tournament Day

Split into two teams, and the last one standing wins! July 21 is National Tug of War Tournament Day, and there’s only one way to celebrate: play tug of war!

Historians think some version of tug of war has been played for many centuries, all the way back to both ancient Egypt and ancient China. Today, formal organizations play by set rules, with eight people to a team and a muddy “moat” between them. The goal is to pull the rope at least four meters or cause the opponents to fall down (and hopefully get very muddy!).

    National Ice Cream Sandwich Day
It’s National Ice Cream Sandwich Day! On the beach or in an ice cream shop, these sweet sandwiches are always delicious.

Ice cream sandwiches come in many varieties. In their traditional form, vanilla ice cream is tucked between two thin layers that resemble chocolate cake. Other versions include chipwiches—ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies.

Variations of this delight can also be found in different countries. In Australia, the most popular sandwiches are called “Giant Sandwiches," while "Maxibons" are half-dipped in chocolate. However, the most exotic ice cream sandwiches might be found in Singapore. Here, red bean, yam, and honeydew are all popular flavors.

      Coast Guard Day
Today, we honor the military branch that protects our waters and shorelines: the United States Coast Guard.

Did you know that the term "Coast Guard" wasn't used until 1915? This military branch got its start on August 4, 1790 and was originally referred to as the Revenue Cutter Service. More than two hundred years later, we celebrate all that the Coast Guard has done to protect our country!

National Walk on the Moon Day
Today is American astronaut Neil Armstrong's birthday. Armstrong was the first man to walk on the moon, and there's no better way to celebrate than by jumping in your rocket ship and taking a moonwalk yourself.

If your spaceship is in the shop, you can study up on Armstrong's historic walk. It was July of 1969 when Armstrong famously took "one small step for man and one giant leap for mankind." The moonwalk lasted two and a half hours, and was documented by only eleven pictures, most of which were taken by Armstrong himself.

Armstrong was accompanied by fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who helped Armstrong plant an American flag on the moon's surface. Shortly after planting the flag, the astronauts received a call from President Richard Nixon, who gave Armstrong the Congressional Medal of Honor upon his return to Earth. Not bad for a kid from small-town Ohio.

    National Root Beer Float Day
It’s National Root Beer Float Day! Between the creamy vanilla ice cream and the frothy root beer foam, how can anyone resist this sweet refreshment? Today we celebrate this tasty summer treat.

At the end of the 19th century, a man named Frank Wisner invented the first root beer float. This early version was also known as a “black cow.” To make one of these delicious beverages, just add a scoop of vanilla ice cream to a tall glass of root beer. (Note: If you reverse the directions and add the root beer to the ice cream you’ll end up with a big mess!)

    National Lighthouse Day
Today is National Lighthouse Day! On this day in 1789, the United States Congress approved an Act “for the establishment and support of lighthouses, beacons, buoys, and public piers.” This piece of legislation commissioned the first Federal lighthouse, which was constructed at the entrance of Chesapeake Bay. Two hundred years later, Congress designated August 7th as National Lighthouse Day to commemorate this important moment in history and to celebrate these beautiful structures.

For centuries, lighthouses have served as beacons of light, guiding ships safely to harbor through storms, fog, or dark of night.

World Cat Day, also known as International Cat Day, is celebrated throughout the world on August 08, 2013. It was founded in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and other animal rights groups. The cat is a small, furry, domesticated, carnivorous mammal that is valued by humans for its companionship and for its ability to hunt vermin and household pests. Although cat ownership has commonly been associated with women, a US poll reported that men and women were equally likely to own a cat.

Cats have been associated with humans for at least 9,500 years, and are currently the most popular pet in the world. Owing to their close association with humans, cats are now found almost everywhere in the world. Cats are a common companion animal in Europe and North America, and their worldwide population exceeds 500 million. In 1998 there were around 43 million cats in Western Europe, 33 million in Eastern Europe, seven million in Japan and three million in Australia. A 2007 report stated that about 37 million US households owned cats, with an average of 2.2 cats per household giving a total population of around 82 million. In contrast, there are about 72 million pet dogs in that country.

Despite being solitary hunters, cats are a social species and use a variety of vocalizations, pheromones and types of body language for communication. These include meowing, purring, trilling, hissing, growling, and grunting. Interactions with cats may improve health and reduce physical responses to stress: for example the presence of cats may moderate increased blood pressure. Cat ownership may also improve psychological health by providing emotional support and dispelling feelings of depression, anxiety and loneliness. Their ability to provide companionship and friendship are common reasons given for owning a cat, Cute Calendar reports.

            VEEP DAY

Veep Day is not the celebration of the Vice President, or the Vice Presidency. Rather, it's the commemoration of the presidential succession provisions in the US Constitution. It was on August 9th, 1974 that Gerald Ford ascended to the presidency upon Richard Nixon's resignation.

    National S'mores Day
It’s National S’mores Day! S'mores are a delicious treat made from three simple ingredients—graham crackers, toasted marshmallows, and melted chocolate bars. Yum!

The first official s'mores recipe was published in the Girl Scout Handbook in 1927, but culinary historians believe that the tradition began much earlier. Over the years, the recipe was passed from camper to camper and eventually became the most famous fireside dessert. Ever wondered why it is called a s’more? Because you’ll always want "some more" of this decadent sweet!
