Nope...here's how the game will go. 1. Vidor has been watering its field, putting out Miracle Grow, and not cutting the grass. The field looks like a cow pasture with grass 18 inches tall. Coach Matthews will do anything to slow down PAM's #25. That's a good plan. 2. Regardless of the knee high grass, PAM will spread the field and find a match up it likes on the O-line versus Vidor's D-line. #25 will find that match up and run to daylight. The Pirates better get 11-defenders to #25. If he gets to the edge, it's 6-points. I don't know how fast #25 is in the 40 yard dash, but in full pads he is plenty fast enough. PAM will throw the ball sideways. Take a chance and load the box to stop #25. Make PAM throw the ball. Who knows? Maybe the PAM WRs get lost in the knee high grass and cant' find the football? 3. Vidor will try student body right and student body left and PAM's D-line and LBs will be there. Vidor will try the toss sweep, and PAM will be there. Vidor will try the misdirection play with both the QB and the TB, and PAM will chase it down. Vidor will try a pass to the TE or the RB out in the flats and PAM's DBs will not be fooled by the play action and misdirection of the Pirate QB. I know you want to burn the clock, but 3 yards and a cloud of dust will be difficult against the size and speed of PAM's defense. Nonetheless, the Pirates should do what they do. Keep pounding the ball and tell the clock operator to be a tad slow on the stop button. Keep the clock moving. Good luck to both teams. Play hard for 48 minutes and add up the score at the end. The only shot for Vidor is if the PAM coaching staff forgets #25 in Port Arthur. If #25 gets on the bus and makes the trip to Vidor, PAM will roll to the W, collect the district championship trophy, and a perfect regular season. The PAM defense will shut down the Vidor misdirection running game. Too much speed on the PAM defense to be fooled by the Slot-T. And, #25... he is dynamite in open space, he knows where the end zone is located, and he can get there in a hurry. PAM 35 VHS 7 Go Indians. Peace.

RJ will be all over the PN-G QB record books when he graduates from PN-G. Love his arm and willingness to throw the football downfield. I'm excited to see him and this great group of kids (2016) in the playoffs this season and watching RJ do great things for two more years. Go Indians. Peace.

I thought the top 5 QB list by Stats was solid...I agree, AMo is in the conversation because of the numbers he put up for his career, but it's pretty hard to knock Stats and his choices...the guys he listed put up numbers and won big games for the Indians. Can't knock a guy like Stats who values championship hardware and big wins vs. pure statistics. 1. Richy Ethridge 1a. Dustin Long 2. - 4. A lot of great names to consider...David Fry, Donnie Schexnaider, Denny Duhon, Ryan Robertson, Jay Musser, Brennan Doty, Adam Morse, and probably a few that I am forgetting. If you had to have one QB to lead a drive and get a W, it is hard to overlook Richy Ethridge. All he did was play great in big games, collect a lot of Ws, and he put a state championship in the trophy case with a lot of his awesome teammates. Of course, Dustin Long had "the drive" vs. Schertz Clemens and took the Indians down the field in the 4Q at Kyle Field to get a W and send PN-G to state. Hard to argue with 1 or 1a. Good discussion...good stuff about PN-G football. Would like to hear the opinions of others. Go Indians. Peace.

Think about this...during the nine year span from 1975 - 1984, the Golden Triangle (22-4A and then 22-5A) had five of the representatives in the state championship game in the highest classification...with three state champions. 1975: PN-G state champions 1977: PN-G state finalists 1980: TJ state finalist 1982: WB state champions 1984: French state co-champions In you throw in the 3A/4A champions from 1975-1990, and add Hebert and WO-S, you have quite a list of state champions from little 'ol SETX. Lots of great football played during the 1970s and 1980s. Back to PN-G vs. Ozen.... Go Indians. Peace.

The two team per district playoff format started in 1982. PA Thomas Jefferson and Beaumont West Brook advanced to the playoffs in 1982 with Alex Durley's Bruins getting on a roll and winning the whole thing over Fort Worth L.D. Hurst Bell. TJ won district and WB won state. In 1983, WB was the district champion and TJ beat PN-G for the second playoff spot. PN-G had a good team. The Indians came up just short vs. WB at The Reservation, I think the game was decided by a FG (17-14) if my old memory is correct...and then TJ beat PN-G at Memorial Stadium 34-21 on a wet sloppy field. Coach Ethridge left PN-G after the '83-'84 school year. In 1984, WB and French represented 22-5A and the French Buffs shared the state championship with Odessa Permain's MOJO. The French playoff theme was a soulful tune "Solid as a Rock" (I don't remember the singers) and the Buff defense was solid as a rock. I remember going to the French v. LaPorte game in the Astrodome. The Buffs crushed LaPorte 48-7 or something like that...it was a blowout. I want to say LaPorte had negative total yards in the first half. The Buff defense dominated. 1984-1988 were lean years for the Indians. Declining enrollment due to the oil bust, but the ISD was still big enough for PN-G to be in a tough 22-5A district that had WB, French, soon to be Central when French combined with BC-P, and TJ. Once PN-G dropped to 4A in the late 1980s, winning returned with Danny Malone's 1989 team that went 12-2. You guys in this thread are bringing back old memories. Good stuff. Go Indians. Peace.

Richy Ethridge was a 2-year starter in 1975 and 1976. 27-2 W/L record with a state championship in '75 and a loss in the semi-finals in '76. Nice list Strattrax...hard to argue with those QBs...lots of good stats and big time wins by those Indians. Go Indians. Peace.

I'll give you GCM and Lee. Blowouts from start to finish. As I recall, the backups did play in those games except for the QB position. Those are fair games for questions and criticism. The other games were not blowouts until mid-4Q. Go back and check the game summaries. Lumberton kept hanging around, Vidor led us at the half and when PN-G had some separation in the 3Q, Vidor struck back in the 4Q with a score and the Pirates had already shown they were willing to go with an onside kick. Against Silsbee, the back-up QB did play and was 3-4 passing and he rushed for a TD. I agree the backup is outstanding. He can close out games...my goodness, if PN-G needed him, he could lead the team to a win from start to finish. The Indians are lucky to have him. But, to complain that the starting QB is doing too much, that is not what the facts prove. The Indians have fed the RB all season long...that won't stop unless the defense forces it on the zone read. It's not about a one man show, its about executing the offense. See Vidor and Central games where #2 could have ran all night long, but instead he pulled the back from the zone/read run/pass option and hit McZeal for long TDs It is not about individual records. That is a guess by fans. It's about team wins and losses. The QB is executing the offense and taking what is open. And, he is very good at it. He gets the ball to the right people in open space...and yes, #5, 6, 10, 11, 12, and the others are playmakers. I'm not arguing with you, but some PN-G fans just like to complain about anything Coach Faircloth does. He loses and fans want a new coach; he wins and fans don't like the way he puts a W in the books. Like I said, some fans - not all, but some - could get a free bucket of gold and they would complain about the bucket. Yet, when it comes time to contribute funds to a new indoor practice facility, those same fans are suddenly quiet. They want others to do the heavy lifting so they can keep complaining. Go Indians. Indian fans ... complaining just to complain. The game with Central was not nailed down until late in the 4Q. 28-14 against Central is not a sure thing. Two big plays and the score is tied. Once we got to 35-14, it was mid-4Q. It wasn't a 42-0 game at the half. When the game is competitive, I like the ball being in the hands of the team's best player. Not all of the QB runs were designed QB keepers. Some were; others were not. Some of the keepers show the growth of #2 as a super soph QB, i.e., he ran the ball because he did not want to force a pass and risk a turnover. Indian fans could be married to Cindy Crawford or Halle Berry and would complain she can't cook ... or you could get a bucket of gold and complain about the bucket. If #2 did not run, some fans would be on message boards complaining that Coach Faircloth refused to put the ball in the hands of his best player. And, from the three games I've seen this season, (GCM, Lee and PAM), several times #2 has created something out of nothing to create positive plays and score points. I'll take that and being 7-1 with a good shot to win out and roll into the playoffs with momentum. Go Indians. Peace.

The PAM game was physical. If the Indians are healthy, and can protect Roschon Johnson, I like the odds of a PN-G win. On defense, just keep playing hard. Sometimes, the other team makes plays. It's not like the Indians defense is playing against teams that just roll over and play dead. The other team is busting its rear end to score. Get in position to make a play and give great effort with 11 kids getting to the football. If you do that, more times than not good things will happen. When great players like PAM's #25 go off for big plays, tip you hat to him, and get ready for the next series. Eliminate our mistakes, i.e., unsportsmanlike conduct penalties come to mind and turnovers, and we have a shot to win out and be 9-1 with some momentum for the playoffs. Can't say enough how special #2 Roschon Johnson is as the QB. For a sophmore, he makes his reads, keeps his eyes downfield, and throws a beautiful football...he can zip the slants, use touch on the floaters to set up the screens, and he can sling it downfield. Of course, he can create something out of nothing, too. If he stays healthy for 3 seasons, his name will be all over the PN-G record books. #12 at WR...#6 at RB...love their playmaking abilities. Tighten up the OL protections (just keep playing hard) and we'll be OK. Give them Jags all your got. Go Indians. Peace.

Go back to 1984-1988...there were plenty of small crowds back then...the same for 1994-1995...1-8-1 and 1-9 seasons tend to reduce the enthusiasm of even the staunchest fan bases. Even in the lean years, I will say that PN-G has a core group of fans, but when wins are hard to come by, so are big crowds. Now, if you want to see monster numbers, then let the Indians get three rounds deep in the playoffs. When that happens, old timers show up, alumni in Houston, Austin and the Metroplex decide to catch a game, and area schools also throw their support behind the Indians. Three rounds deep and the numbers will explode. Hopefully this season the Indians can make some noise in the playoffs and we can have some good times ala 1974-1977 and 1999...38,000 fans in purple and white is a site to see...especially as I get older. I agree with BMT Soljua...winning cures all...regardless of the program, when you win, the fans show up. Go Indians. Peace.

Captain Obvious says... On defense, PN-G has decent size along the front seven and the Indians can go toe-to-toe with anyone stopping the run between the hash marks. When Vidor gashed PN-G for big yards, it sounded like a play that got Quirante or Hecklon to the edges [didn't see the game]. Protecting the edges and containing PAM's speed is a concern...big concern. This game could be a repeat of Angleton v. PN-G, where Angleton ran the ball at will on the Indians...Angleton's RB got to the edge and PN-G did not have an answer. The Indians have to try and keep PAM's RB in the middle of the field where there is help to get him down. The Indians are size-challenged in the secondary. Not much you can do about it besides play hard and use all of the talent God has given you. The Indians have to keep everything in front of them and get as many defenders to the ball as possible. Easier said than done. Do not get beat deep. Make PAM march down the field. If they do that and score, then tip your hat to them and get ready for the next series. On offense, PN-G has to protect the ball...and protect Roschon Johnson when he is looking downfield. PN-G has to keep PAM out of the backfield. Spread out the Titans and create as many running lanes as possible. When you have a shot to throw it downfield, do it. If Coach Faircloth has saved any tricks, i.e., fake punts, swinging gate, a play we have never seen before, the PAM game may be time to give it a shot in the right circumstances. Do whatever you have to do to create momentum. Looking forward to seeing this game at Memorial Stadium. +1 Not sure why everyone is jumping on the Vidor bandwagon. I don't see a Montana Quirante on the team. The team to watch is Central. They will have a big, fast, and experienced defense. It may not matter what they have on offense because they will have the ability to shut people down and win games 3-0, 7-0, 10-7, etc. Coach Foreman may finally start using some of the coaching experience he gained at WO-S, i.e., defense first, control the ball and clock, and add up the score at the end. Off topic...slightly off topic...UH-alum here (Class of 1994)...tell me about former UT RB Duke Catalon (spelling?). He is penciled in as one of the Coogs RBs coming out of spring practice and I like what I have read about him, i.e., size, speed, toughness. Why did he leave Austin? I know Texas has a stable of talent, but DC was highly regarded out of HS, and Texas seemed to be a good fit for him, i.e., running the ball downhill. What sayeth the UT faithful about the DC? We need to find a strong RB to run between the tackles to replace Kenneth Farrow, who was a tough kid that always found a way to get us the extra yard needed and he took care of the football...is DC our guy to replace Kenneth Farrow? It was a good game. A tad chilly, but nice weather. Very happy for UH to play well...impressed with Temple's size...they have size all over the field...easy to see how they played well vs. Penn State and ND. Houston hung tough in the trenches, did not give up the big play on defense, and thank you Lord for Greg Ward, Jr. What a QB! He is not just a running QB or "athlete" playing QB...he is a QB who can read defenses, throw the ball all over the yard, and of course, he can create something out of nothing with his amazing feet...he has eyes in the back of his head...and he just makes plays! Love his toughness. Those 3 FR on the OL are getting better each day...but it helps, GWJr can buy time to throw or just take off! How about PA's own, Elandon Roberts? Tough as nails, smart, and a great kid. He does not know my kids from Adam or Eve, but he gave them a hug in the stadium entrance walk-through. Happy he is doing well. If PAM needs a role model from college, they should ask Elandon Roberts to speak to kids. Hell, I wish he would go to PN-G and tell his story about EARNING his spot at UH...desire...perseverance...toughness...he is our GWJr on defense. Go Elandon Roberts. Go Coogs. P.S. Cameron Malveaux from HF is a MAN, too. SETX should be proud of him. He will be in the NFL. He has the size...has huge hands...should be a good DE in the NFL. I did not see him before or after the game today...left during the trophy presentation due to cold kids...but saw him in pregame warm-ups during drills. Big agile young man. Peace.

It has worked well for PN-G when a coach/son tandem came through The Reservation: Bum Phillips/Wade Phillips 1965 Doug Ethridge/Richy Ethridge 1975-1976 [State Championship in '75 and Semi-Finals in '76] Mike Long/Dustin Long 1997-1999 [Bi-District or Area Round in '98 and State Finalist in '99] Matt Burnett/Clint Burnett [the year escapes me, but they made a playoff run and great father/son memories] I'm ready for Coach Faircloth to guide his son through our program. Across the tracks over at the other school, the Spell and Barrow families had some success.  TJ-ex Todd Dodge did well with his son, Riley.  Art and Kendall Briles at Stephenville.  The Detmer family.  Joe, Kenny, and Little Joe Washington had success at PA Lincoln.  Coach Willie Ray Smith, Bubba and Tody Smith were the kings of Beaumont football during the 1960s. Coaching your son can be done.  I haven't walked in those shoes, but it seems to me they all have a strong family bond that will last forever, with or without football.  All of those coaches were damn good, too...disciplined men who built or were part of great programs.

Tread lightly re Ned...back to back DCs speaks more loudly than does spring football or 7 on 7...I'm a proud PN-G Indian through and through, but I prefer hardware vs. running around in the spring and summer in socks and jocks...I agree 7 on 7 is a good thing...it allows QBs, RBs, WRs, and DBs to compete...I hope the development from spring and summer translates into good things for the Indians in the fall of 2013.  The next three years should be good for PN-G...we should be back in the business of collecting hardware for the trophy cases. Vidor will be hard pressed to replace MQ on both sides of the ball.  Like it or not, MQ made the Pirate offense go and he was equally important on defense.  It was no coincidence that one of Vidor's best snapshots of success during four consecutive seasons happened while MQ played at VHS. 2009: 7-4 2010: 2-8 2011: 10-3 2012: 9-2 Coach Matthews would probably be the first to tell you, MQ was the difference maker.  Coach Matthews has 68 Ws and 75 Ls in 14 seasons...some would argue that is below average...but, the point is, that record could be worse...a lot of those Ws were thanks to MQ.  Coach Matthews does deserve a ton of credit for selecting an offense that maximizes the talent and discipline that VHS kids bring to the table.  And that mixture of talent and discipline is what made MQ very good.  Losing him will cause a drop-off in Ws and Ls.  That is not say Vidor's program will tank...but, it will not be smooth sailing to another 9-2 or 10-3 season.  There may be more 2-8 seasons on the horizon.  All programs have cyclical success.  Life after Dustin Long at PN-G had its bumps.  PAM after Jammal Charles had a couple of mediocre seasons.  Central post-Robert Mitchell had its ups and downs.  Nederland has been the most consistent, but even they have had so-so seasons relative to some of their playoff runs. Vidor fans, MQ was a very good HS player...it will be interesting to see how that Wing-T offense goes without a game manager like MQ handling the ball.  We'll see. And, no, the Texas State 4A championship is not rightfully Vidor's trophy.  In all of those great wins by MQ, he only beat PN-G and Ned 1x each.  Matthews has only defeated PN-G 3x.  I'll take a 11-3 record.  :) Go Indians.  Peace.

I don't believe PN-G ever beat PA Lincoln.  It did not happen as far back as I can remember...and my memory goes back to 1974.  Coach Don Bryson had some decent teams at PN-G with Monte Wainwright, the Westbrook brothers (Steve, Greg, and Brad), and with Bobby Straface, but I do not remember the Indians ever upsetting the Bees.  We came close in 1988-1989 at the gym on The Reservation, but Lincoln's B.J. Tyler, Ronald Campbell, Kelvin McKyer, and Marlon Jackson pulled out a 1 or 2-point win.  The Bees won district, pressed teams into defeat during the playoffs, and they won another state championship.  The Bees won back-to-back state trophies in 1988-1989.  They were dominant.  B.J. Tyler was a man among boys and Lincoln had a deep bench of 6'4" to 6'6" guys that played "in your jock" suffocating defense.  PN-G kept things close with a slow pace of play, 6'1" SG Bobby Straface hitting big shots, and 6'9" Michael Jeter playing great defense and battling Ronald Campbell on the glass...but, Lincoln's depth and B.J. Tyler were too much to handle. Does anyone remember PN-G beating PA Lincoln?  If so, what year was it? Anyone remember when old Beaumont French, BC-P, Hebert, and Lincoln went back and forth from about 1977-1981 or 1982?  No break-away rims back then...dunks would shake the backboards for what seemed like 3 or 4 minutes.
