  1. Prayers from Crosby cougars, Laporte bulldogs and Marlin bulldogs Coach Bear
  2. Who,when, and where does Crosby scrimmage next week? Thanks
  3. Jridge, man I want to meet you somewhere and buy you lunch. In my opinion you are spot on. I have 32 years in this business of coaching young men and I have seen a lot as well as experiencing my own interactions with coaches at my high school of Marlin Texas. But your statement of finding someone who actually cares for the young men as well as wins and losses is the key. When I was DC at Crosby in the 90's, we scrimmaged Ozen and I was impressed with the talent. We also played lamarque twice in the dome during those years and Ozen was the only team that had talent close to lamarque, now they didn't have the experience, coaching, support and other important variables. Unfortunately in our business many coaches are $ hoppers, looking to increase salary or if they are older, looking to increase their retirement multiplier. They are smooth talkers and tell the search or interview committee what they want to hear instead of having that committee due hard core investigating of the REAL reason someone wants to be the head coach of your foreign school. I have had the honor of working for 9 different coaches at 4 different schools, clear lake, Crosby, Aldine Eisenhower , and Baytown sterling. Two were truly great and successful and really cared about their kids and this led to their success, Coach Stewart of clear lake and coach Carson of big Ike . Two others really cared for kids but weren't as successful for various reasons but I am proud to say I worked for them because they developed men. A few of the others were dull, unimaginative and thus unsuccessful. 3 others were cancers and harmed kids, I wouldn't spit on them to put out a fire on their burning body, yet they still get head jobs today because they get over on those who really do the hiring and are too lazy to research. Jridge I hope you are on the search or interview committee. I like to give the example of UT-AM with regards to coaching. Yes I am a UT grad but also a big supporter of AM ( my most successful player was Steve McKinney an Aggie, then colt, then Texan) and cheer for everything Texas. I had the honor of attending the last ut-am game at Kyle field. Before the game the Aggies HC, I forgot his name which tells you how little impact he had on Aggies nation but especially his players. Met the Aggies seniors as the were announced near mid field. They all came to coach former Texan tight end coach and just shook hands, I was appalled! The week before UT did the same senior recognition and players as well as their families met Mack Brown at the 50 where EVERYONE was crying and hugging. A M hired the no name coach because he looked like them and was a good old boy, thus no one remembers his name, yet former UT players are naming their sons Mack. I know and agree Mack overstayed by 2 years, but that showed why one program was successful and the other a non factor. I emulate Mack because one day I got to answer to St. Peter that I did all I could to help these young men become great men. That is why I still grind after 32 years. MUCH RESPECT TO YOU JRIDGE!!!!! coach bear
  4. Is barbers hill going to have boys soccer next year? Have they hired a coach already--this job not on their board. thanks
  5. This new system is NOT a new system, the same old system but with a DIFFERENT name. 6a-old 5A----5A-old 4A  etc......... :o
  6. Morning, I am sitting here in practice star testing reading these posts and find them quite amusing. I come on SETX once every week or two because between coaching track, offseason football, and teaching 140 Biology students I don't have much time. This is my 29th year of coaching in Harris County. All schools I have coached at have made the state playoffs and I have been a part of some bad years. I have, like everyone on this site, has an opinion. I haven't been a head football coach yet, runnerup several times and I have about given up on trying anymore because of the politics involved. At almost every head football opening, there is someone already decided upon by the powers at be. Sometimes this is a school board, sometimes a committe, sometimes a superintendent, and sometimes an influential community member. If the actual OZ behind the scenes has the best interest of the ENTIRE school and community, then the best choice will be made. That is not often the case. I have worked with Bill Kruger, state champion basketball coach, and he is fantastic, but he wouldn't make a fair athletic director. I have worked with Jerry Stewart, and football is his main interest, but i believe he would do what is right for the entire program. Coach Carson, football coach at Eisenhower, now at College Park would also be fair to all sports. Kent Bachtel, now retired, from Waco Midway was very successful at football, but also as athletic director at Midway which competes yearly as the most decorated 4A district in the state. I have worked with basketball coaches such as Mike Carribine (Dulles, now I think) who would be fair athletic directors.  I have worked with Coach Egans at Crosby and believe he has the best interest of athletes at heart and would make a good AD. So yes I think it is possible to have a fair AD who is not a football coach. At the same time I do believe certain coaches in the school and outside the school (AAU) preach to their kids the theory of specialization. THIS IS SO WRONG AT ANY LEVEL--When you study the workout lives of international greats as Sergio Bubka, you will realize that they often only worked on their sport between 4-6 months out of the year. They played complimentary sports to not go through fatigue and injuries of not only muscles, but the mind as well. Yet we have 9 year olds in year round baseball, basketball, soccer, or high school football players that just play fall football and then get on the AAU 7 on 7 circuit??? What are we doing-- to me the best high school program would have NO ATHLETIC PERIODS.  All athletes (including golf and tennis) would have to take athletic PE taught by a coach who is nationally certified in strength. All sports practices would be after school. Sorry just bored during testing and thought I would chime in. Coach Bear :D
  7. Did Price okay this --sign release saying not for athletic reasons??? why did he leave?? :-\
  8. RIP Coach Byrd, I have never personally met this coach, but feel like I know him, much like a modern day Paul Bunyan. I have worked with  coaches such as Tim Lumpkin and Mike Bass who personally knew him and told of all the great things he did, but others in the community also lauded his daily efforts to help all those he came in contact with. Coaches like Jackie Byrd make our profession still one of honor.
  9. I went to this game and all I can say is WOW--i know it is a loss, but that sterling team played with heart and guts, something I have never seen. Definitely out athleted and out sized by Laporte, the mighty mite rangers followed their coaches lead into gritty play. They won me over=could cause problems for teams in this district.
  10. You mentioned Mart, I am from that area and know for a fact they are NOT a high paying district. They have lots of athletes which may make the less pay worth it--I don't know, you need to ask Rusty Nail. I believe we live in a what have you done for me NOW, and you are replicating that with your statement. Until you can chart it and do a thorough analysis, you CANNOT rely on your emotions overcoming good sense.
  11. sorry to create anothet reply, but going backwards this morning--yes he was part of the staff with Weddell in 90's that won several championships and was beaten by Stephenville a couple of others. Heath from Pearland , the Brazoswood coach the Coumbia coach (maybe the same guy) and another were there--also Heath's coordinator that hasn't become a head coach yet but has applied many times. I am going to withhold my comment on class OR lack of on that staff and let you put one and one together. :-\
  12. Statements like that make me cringe, embarassing for a coach to hear another say that. Accept defeat with grace and give credit to your opponent, AND blame yourself as coach of the loser. Then tell the press you'll prepare your team better the next time. Geez!
  13. Isn't there a way to watch all games at Turner?? I watched Dayton and Humble several weeks ago. Hoping to watch Crosby and Park.
  14. That is up to the district committee. Some districts take ties as one point as compared to 3 for a win. Some vote on shootouts and give that type of victory 2 pts, others give shootouts a full 3. Shootouts aren't a gurantee until playoffs start and that is only after an overtime period of I believe 2 ten minute halves--maybe 15.
  15. Good luck Titans, you are representing our district well. Coach Barnes and Coach Crooms, keep bringing the hat and lead the team to Jerry Jones home next week. Is there any computer site that is carrying todays game video on line or just audio??? I am technically challenged but supported by my 10 year old son. ::) ::)
  16. At Baytown Sterling, we have 20 starters coming back. I like to look at it from the perspective of 20 players back who were one foot away from beating regional finalist Laporte (lost 14-13 with failed 2 pt conversion by Freshman RB with 1 minute left). Now my mentor Jerry Stewart used to say that we have 20 starters back who know how to go 0-10!!!! ;D
  17. May have the year wrong, it was the year after Marcus Worthington, Marcus Hamilton, Peter Barnaba, and Raymond Froom graduated.
  18. 99 Crosby team that went 1-9. The defense was the best I ever had in 28 years of coaching, we were still a top 5 in 4A in Chronicle stats at a record of 1-4. This was the year we lost in Dayton with the mysterious clock keeper which allowed them to kick a winning field goal. I had the game stopped to let refs be aware and our stands thought I was the cause of them having a chance to win. Ref crew sent us a letter of apology the next day when they realized the "malfunctions" of the stadium clock as they put it. Jerry got me on that game. Not blaming Jerry -he coached his kids up. That 1-9 team underachieved but it was the fault of us.
  19. sorry, but I am a tech pre-kindergardner--is this a live video feed? Normally I go to many playoff games when we are not in the hunt (and I think 0-10 qualifies us as "out of the hunt"), but sometimes leaving the house with momma keeping the evil eye on me is not worth the consequences
  20. I am just proud that both teams made it here. To have two teams from the district playing for the state semis is awesome. I am also proud that 7 of  8 teams are from Houston, kicking Dallas butt, in region two and three semifinals.
  21. Sorry, just joined the conversation --but again, Lamarque is another reason why having 4th place teams deserve the playoffs and EARN the playoffs is a GREAT system to determine the BEST team in the state of Texas. I know that in the GOOD OLD DAYS (i am old too) there was only one team per district-does not make that the best system, just the way it was like square wheels and spears made of tree branches. I like to think we have evolved. I teach Biology and see this as another example of Evolution. Before all my fellow Christians yell at me, I too am a Christian-just don't deny evolution (look at the flounder ???) Congrats to Lamarque and Manvel but mostly to my fellow district foes PAM and LP. You represent our district well and prove it to be the most POTENT district in the STATE OF TEXAS.
  22. This is a terrible trap game. Memorial is the team that looks like Jane, but plays like Tarzan. While in Aldine ISD, Eisenhower, Mac, Nimitz, and Aldine ALL hated playing them--the toughest -never quit-robotic-look like Opie team around. GET READY PAM, if you look ahead to Laporte/Katy it could be bad. This team is more dangerous than Springs! :-*
