  1. I have to agree that the Crosby Dayton game is not a rivalry game. With Crosby winning it may become more of one because Dayton will play it with more emotion. but because it has been so one sided in recent times it cannot be so classified. In my belief rivalry games are Clear Lake-Clear Creek, DeerPark-Laporte, Sterling-Lee, PNG-Nederland, Temple-Belton, even WestBrook-PAM. I know I extended the reaches of southeast texas a bit, and I know there are many 2 and 3A games I am not familiar with. In the past Dayton-Liberty used to be a good one just like CE King-Crosby in the late 80's and early 90's. Texas - Oklahoma is a rivalry game, but Texas - Texas A M is not as good as it used to be. WHat do ya'll think?
  2. There is a freshman from Baytown Sterling named Jamar Gibson who started at safety for the Rangers. He is 6' 2" 200 pounds, fast, probably a 4.55-4.6. His older brother starts for Kilgore at guard, but Jamar is a SKILL player. He played a lot of receiver also, probably had over 20 receptions in limited action. He was voted to 2nd team all district safety in a district where there is a lot of competition at skill position. Oh  yeah, he is a great kid, yes sir and no sir. I wish there were more of him.
  3. Great Post by Kindafunny. As a coach we should be held responsible to coach ALL student athletes, whether male or female, football or basketball or baseball or soccer or track, as if they were all possibly D-1 athletes because THEY ALL ARE!! And if you coach, and don't follow that idea, then you are doing your student athletes a disservice. Or if you are too tired to work to help them get into college for athletics or just to become a future coach/teacher, you need to get out of the profession. There are a lot of coaches that are too lazy or think too highly of themselves to go the extra mile for ALL student athletes. The true D-1 athletes will get attention from those college coaches. It is the ones that are capable of playing D-2, D-3, NAIA, or juinor college that need the high school coaches attention. I have made it a point to train all like D-1 prospects and work like the devil to get all others interest from the lower college levels. Student athletes can read a coach very quickly and tell whether they are self-serving OR student/athlete serving. Don't get me wrong there are a lot of great ones out there who are student first. My mentors Jerry Stewart of Dayton and Kent Bachtel of Waco Midway are definitely student first. Other coaches I've worked with that I would put in that category are Todd Schoppe (now AD at Laporte), Mike Bass (now Ad at Alvin), Coach Carson at Woodlands College Park, Dexter Wesley the OC at Aldine, Coach Simmons at Aldine (formerly of Smiley), and Bruce Bell formerly of Forest Brook and North Texas U. You also don't have to look any further than some of your youth leagues. There is no pay there just love for the kids. I know there are some bad apples in youth sports, just like in high school sports, but there are some youth coaches that I would like to have on my staff because I coached them throughout high school and I truly know their character. One that is like that is a Barbers Hill parent, Marcus Hamilton, who tries to work out BH athletes in the summer to help out the program. He has his heart in the right place and I wish he had a teaching certificate - I would hire him in an instant. He is the type of community member that makes Barbers Hill a great place to live.
  4. You are right on!!! Baytown Sterling exposed PAM in their game. And once you are weakness is exposed on video, the "great coaches and staffs will use it against you". The offensive coordinator at Sterling is one of those, and he found the weakness in bits and pieces from PAM 3 games before Sterling. This is his second year at Sterling and has done an excellent job with below-below-below-average athletes this year. He did very good last year with average athletes helping STerling get their first state playoff reward in over 20 years. The funny thing is he was a FINALIST for both the PAM and Baytown Lee jobs!!!!! Can you imagine either Lee's or PAM's offense under his direction? It would be incredible--whoever makes him a HEAD COACH will be labeled a "genius school district for finding such a diamond in the rough", but astute football fans can see his potential at what he has done at Sterling with the worst athletes in the district. Find out what he did at Mesquite when he was there--they were a BEAST! later
  5. I find it quite amusing all the anti-Masters sentiment on the board. I wouldn't trust a 4A or 5A head coach without one, especially if he has the added responsibility of Athletic Director. If someone has been in 4A or 5A football several years and has the desire to be either a head coach OR athletic director at that level, he needs to get off his or her butt and complete the Mid Management Degree which is quite helpful. The only coaches who will complain against it are those who are too lazy or dumb to complete the course work. Let's just take away all certifications or degrees, and let anyone who finished the fifth grade apply. They need 5 years of pee wee coaching experience--stop that --make it 3 years--now maybe some will be happy.
  6. The UIL rule is an athlete cannot participate in athletics if he turns 19 before September 1.
  7. Boy, did I overlook a big one, seriously, people at the Hill take their athletics VERY SERIOUSLY and get a lot of move ins for athletics. I saw one of my former linebackers who moved into BH for the soul purpose of having his elementary age sons play there in their near future. Good job pointing out my oversight.
  8. Video makes you look so much slower than you really are. We critique the missed tackles as poor, but even great NFL tacklers look poor when trying to tackle an elusive runner. You can teach form tackling all day long, but when SPEED IS IN YOUR FACE it is an entirely different story. I think this young man has tremendous potential. Of course I'd like to see more video, but this clip is MIGHTY IMPRESSIVE.
  9. As a high school coach of 25 years I have seen a lot, but I haven't heard of many instances where parents were given jobs to relocate for their athletic children. Of course, the area where this would be prevalent would be small to med size towns with industry, which describes the Golden Triangle and East Texas. So to say it doesn't happen would be like saying all politicians are honest! Now what I do witness is parents who move their children/athletes to areas to play under established programs with established winning coaches. Some examples in the Houston area are North Shore football, Katy football, Hightower football, Dayton football, Wheatley basketball, Hightower basketball, Woodlands football, Kingwood Soccer, Kingwood basketball, Kingwood baseball, Bellaire baseball, Cinco Ranch track & field and I know the same happens in girls sports, but I am not as knowledgeable. This is nothing more than parents using their ability to move their career for what they consider is best for their children. In the early 90's, I was football at Clear Lake and we had a move in from Centerville Texas (1A) to Clear Lake so he could play basketball under Bill Krueger who had recently won a state championship and was the runnerup the next. The ironic thing is he only played basketball his junior year, along with football, but never played his senior year as he was being heavily recruited by Notre Dame and A & M as a defensive lineman and tight end. He went on to become a great center for A & M and for the COLTS and Texans. His name is Steve McKinney and has a sports show on 1560 the GAME from Houston with an LSU fanatic. It is not just those with $ who can do this. Sometimes those with less can do this easier. We are currently involved in a situation where a mother with "3" tremendously gifted athletes continues to move from school zone to school zone because she can more easily re locate by apartment. It is destroying the kids though. They are not grounded at all and have no father. I am hoping they get back, not only for their athletic ability, but because they are great kids and desperately need male guidance. Sorry to ramble, just my observations during a long coaching career. Coach Bear
  10. Good to hear from you Daddy23, liberal or not, if you enjoy football we can work out any differences. Give me an email on the following address and we'll talk. Thanks Coach Bear [email protected]
  11. Hello youth football coaches. I am new to the board. I have coached HS football in Southeast texas for my 25th year. Of the four schools I have coached all have done well and been playoff bound (I won't take full credit, but I have had my hand in the pot while we were making the playoff teams). I have a company for the past 5 years that serves as a football consultant to youth leagues as well as individuals. Most of my work in the past has consisted of individual consultations and youth league clinics in the spring because of our hectic fall schedule. But we have given clinics during the season on Wednesday evenings. I get usually 5-6 coaches all oldschool with lots of experience to give specific one hour lecture on their positions play, followed by a one hour breakout room with the coach immediately after. I don't want to use this site to promote my business, but I do see more than dollars and cents in what I do. Football is the prime reason I am where I am today. I see my job as a high school coach as one who can influence our young ment to become hard working moral future Christian fathers. In these days(especially with the upcoming election) the media seems to tell the public that this is wrong. The media is full of crap!!!!I hope everyone will come out on election day and prove the liberal media wrong in JUST 10 DAYS!!!!! Sorry for getting political--can't help it I love this country and all it has to offer and hate to see it go down without a fight. If you are interested I'll leave my home email and I can contact you. My team will be traveling to Beaumont WB territory this Saturday afternoon after taking a beating last week to Northshore. I believe my boys will bounce back against a fine WB team. Thanks for the ability to vent a little--good for the blood pressure. Coach Bear [email protected]
