Good win for the Rebels

Now they get a playoff before the playoffs. The third game against Big Sandy should be a great game. The teams are co champions of the district and this game decides who gets the bye and who plays in the bi-district game. Should be an instant classic with so musch riding on the outcome.

We will basiclly have someone on the bench who will help manage minutes to be sure that all the players get time on the floor somewhat equally. These players have been up against the same players since they were in the 7th grade and some even from Little Dribbler days. It is just exciting to watch them compete with and agaisnt these players one last time.

Yes that is the case. While we hope that both our teams and several others are still playing that weekend, the show will go on. I don't have one playing this year and I have a few sideline buddies that can fill in for me with my newspaper duties. So send in those forms and we are going to have some All Star games.

Didn't mean to leave out the girls, but I assume the same could be said if the Evadale girls are playing for a state championship that day.

Yes is will! We hope to still be playing, but the show will go on even without the Rebels involved.

The SETX All Star Basketball Classic games will be on Saturday, March 3rd at the Evadale Gym. We are following the NFL formula as players still playing for a championship will miss these games but we have plenty of talent that will be available from teams whose season will have ended.

Nomination forms went out to area schools this week and while teams that are still in the playoffs will not be sending names in the coaches whose seasons have ended will begin send their names in ASAP. Once a team is eliminated from the playoffs I hope that their coaches will remember the ALl Star games and send in names to us.

We hope that there are still several teams in the boys regional round and girls at state that day, but with our festival moving up to its new date we still wanted to highlight some outstanding senior athletes with this all star opportunity.

Did not get a chance to be at last nights game, but I was at the WH game and BS. I would much rather watch games like those two than one that is a 50 point spread.

The stuff about the ball or the refs or whatever do not get recorded in the standings. I have people that I know at most of the schools in Evadale's district they love and support their school just like we do the Rebels. We have had a great run for the last 4 or 5 years and it has been exciting to win district titles, area titles, even a couple of regional titles. I wish everyone could experience going to Austin for the State Tournament in something.

Why don't we all just go to the games and cheer for our side. Aplaud great plays or effort from our opponents. Put on some stripes and call a game before we get too worked up about calls. Just all around enjoy the games and the players. We will have these same arguements with every sport, every season, every year. Life would be so much better if we could just let it stay a game.

I understand and would add that we hope that Evadale will not have any players in the game due to the playoffs, but by the process of elimination at a maximum only one girls team from each classification and 2 boys teams from each classification will still be in the playoffs. I for one hope we have six girls teams and 12 boys teams still left from this area. But we want to have some great games even if we have to do them without some of the talents that will be in the playoffs.

This year the Evadale Catfish Festival will once again host the SETX All Star Basketball games
However, there is one change as this years festival is March 1-4 so the games will be played on Saturday March 3rd.

Now we all know that weekend is the weekend of the girls state tournament and the boys regional tournament, but it will be more like the NFL Pro Bowl. The players that are still involved and playing will just keep in trying to bring a state championship home, but players whose seasons have ended will get one last chance to play.

We will try to have four games
3A-5A Girls  1 PM
3A-5a Boys 2:30 PM
1A-2A + Private Schools Girls 4 PM
1A-2A + Private School Boys 5:30 PM

Coaches will recieve nomination forms once the regular season is done. For those who do not make the playoffs they can respond right away, and for those in the playoffs they can respond once their team has finished the season. If they continue on (and we wish them well to do so) then they will just not send any nominees in for the games.

Tickets for one or all four games will be $5 with the proceeds going to the Gilbert & Betty Richardson Memorial Scholarship Fund that has presented over $10,000 in the past 5 years to graduates of Evadale High School. The players will be wearing their school uniforms so it will be a great opportunity to see those senior players that have been so important to their teams putting on the uniform one last time.

The Rebels are on a roll right now and Coach Williams will not let them forget they have a game to play after defeating Big Sandy on Tuesday. The Rebels want to secure the first half lead and get a step closer to punching their return ticket to the playoffs.

I was the guy taking pictures on the Evadale end of the court in the 1st quarter. I can say that from floor level with the action coming towards me and I have some pictures to prove this. The two quick fouls on the BS post players were for contact to the body. His replacement took a charge late in the period, but the young man that sat down with two fouls definately commited those two.

Calls are missed all the time! I still hate to go to a game that is only worked by two ref's, but even with three refs calls are missed, but the two fouls early the ref was to my left looking into the paint and he made the calls as the BS post jumped into the Evadale shooter. There is a very different perspective from the stands. I have been shooting sports pictures for the Buna Beacon and Silsbee Bee for over 6 and 3 years respectively. The calls looking at the game from the baseline are different and if you saw them you might be less inclined to think that they were bad calls.

Again I am not saying that there were not calls missed on both sides, but those two were not missed.

Oh ye of little faith! Guess that poor game had some lingering effects?

The Rebels still have something to prove as they did tonight! Last year the Rebels used their difficult non-district schedule and a district championship to be a springboard to the final four in 1A Division 1. This could be setting up for a repaet of the same kind of success that the team  had last year. 

The rankings should change next week in SETX and the state polls as Big Sandy was ranked 13th in the latest poll. The Rebels have their hold on district as the 1st half leaders with a 4-0 record and they will try to one up last years team as they try to not only win the district once again, but to go undefeated in doing it.

Got to love posts ABOUT Evadale!

In football we get hammered because we don't play anybody in a district that we don't get to pick. We play 2 2A teams and 2 1A Division 1 teams and a larger private school. But we have to explain why we have the schedule we do?

In basketball we are getting hammered because we are playing too tough schools. Evadale has already played 4A Vidor so whats the big deal about a couple of 3A teams. The reason you play tough teams is to get better. Evadale played tough teams last year and made it to the State Semi Final game and in all likelyhood should have won the state championship.

Coaches make schedules, they look to fill holes so they can play the maximum number of games allowed. They don't get to pick district teams, but they get to choose who they play out of district. It is just that simple and Silsbee and HJ can play reserves or not, Evadale will play their starters and their reserves, because that is what you do to get better. The Rebels have 3 games before district starts and they want to play the best competition they can. Doing that gives them the best opportunity to be successful in district and beyond.

Someone said Evadale could have said no, well so could Silsbee and HJ. So I guess all three coaching staffs must believe that something good can come out of these games!
