  1. The Rebels pipeline of talent seems seems to be flowing full force. For a 1A school to have over 55 young men playing on the Varsity and junior varsity is a tremendous help. Players can get a couple of plays off during a varsity game and the younger players are playing JV games and not sitting on the varsity bench. That is a fact that is taken for granted in 2A and above schools, but in 1A it is not.

Many of the sophomores playing for the Rebel varsity this year were players who won a district championship last year and who had an outstanding season not just in wins, but in that all important playing time.

This year the JV is 3 and 1 with all three victories coming against 2A schools. The Rebel JV is made up mostly of freshmen with a few who are sophomores and one junior. They still have games to play and each game gives them more experience and more chances to learn and get better.

The junior high (just one team) is 1 and 1 with two additional scrimage victories. They have some great skill kids and some pretty good size especially in the 7th grade.  The eight grade group will step into many of the skill positions next year on the JV as most of the linemen on the JV are freshmen.

The Rebel football program under Coach Williams is better and getting better each and every year he is here. They have an aggressive weight lifting program that is paying dividends in Power Lifting Meets and on the football field. The track program continues to funnel players with increasing speed off the track and onto the field. All the cogs are working together to improve the program and continue to help the kids get better.

  2. Just a thought!

I know it would take more time but why don't you do the top 5 rankings in each class. I love the Rebels being #6 and in fact I like it that 5, 6 & 7 are all schools from our district, but we are ranked above one team and above another on the bubble that both defeated us in a non district games. I think there is no shame in having a loss to a larger school that is why it is an upset if the small school wins right?

I like to see where you place teams, but it would be more inclusive and more accurate if it was done by classification.

    Just a thought!  ;D

  3. The facts are still not all in, but apparently Evadale junior varsity player Bud Tanton was seriously injured when he was struck by a vehicle as he was riding a four wheeler some time this afternoon. He had to be lifefighted to Houston for treatment.

It would not be good to speculate on anything more as it would be second and third hand information. Please pray for this young man and his family in this difficult time. I will pass along information has it is available and confirmed.

    Please pray for Bud!

  4. First it is great that HD gets to play at home, nobody likes playing on the road. Nobody wanted anyone to have damage or to be forced to have to play at any time other than Friday nights under the lights. Glad you could at least move back to your place.

Just like against Chester I doubt that the cats will have much trouble with the dogs, but 55 the last part of your post was just WAC!

The Rebels were not home week before last either for our game with you and the Rebels luck at WH has not been too good. Oh and by the way EVERYONE in Evadale wished that the game had been at HD, seeing the final score on your scoreboard would have made the victory complete. Oh which part of HD's game would have been different if they played at home the terrible or the stupid part? (Your words not mine).

Location did not and would not have changed the outcome of that one!

Oh as long as you guys are having to do repairs your stadium how about doing everyone a favor and adding some lights to brighten the field up and replacing the lumber on the visiting stands I know too many people that have gotten splinters just from coming to watch a little football.

    Just a thought!

  5. [move]Justin Crain from Evadale[/move]

He had 186 yards rushing on 11 carries and 2 touchdowns (16.9 per carry)

He also had 3 solo tackles at safety which is pretty impressive when you consider that the Mustangs were not able to run on the Rebels (-57 yards) so those tackles were at the line of scrimmage (2) and one in the backfield of a great open field tackle on a pitchout.

Josh Swift might also be a candidate

"Swifty" as hes called kicked three field goals against the Mustangs, the longest from 38 yards. He is 4 out of 5 in field goal attempts this season and his 37 yarder as time expired before the half last week against HD was a huge boost as the Rebels went in up by 10 at the half.

  6. With WD handling HI easily at least from the reports on the game thread I am confident to make my opening prediction...

    Rebels 48    Cardinals 14

I agree with BIGMO44 that the Rebels will be hard to handle and with a potential show down coming up Halloween night between the Rebels and the Oilers (I know I said take them one at a time), but the Rebels will be looking to have all the cogs in the offense working and available for a showdown between what would be the two undefeated teams and all but a district championship hanging in the balance.

Coach Williams has shown that he can get the Rebels prepared and keep them focused. I am sure that the Rebels were already in game prep and watching film on the Cards this morning and I imagine that the coaches were going to be at the WH/HI game since it was the perfect opportunity to scout the next two opponents in one game.

I do expect that the Cards will be ready to play and score as they were against the Oilers, but as I said earlier the emotion of getting back on the field at least helped the Cards against Burkeville, but the Rebels are loaded and with the district title at least in their grasp they will be ready for whatever circumstances that they may face.

I will be interested to hear what others think as this one is the opening shot in a week that will be filled with all kinds of talk.

  7. Due to UIL rules teams must wait at least 5 days to play games. This will make it impossible for those games to be made up.

The district exec committee had to drop SP games from the standings. They could play as many as they could, but none of them that they do play count in the district standings. It is unfortunate, but they pushed back district a week and the could not wait any longer.

The two games will be byes, but the Sharks will play the others to get as many games as they can and to fill out the other teams schedules. UIL will not punish the Sharks and they will be back in the hunt next year.

  8. After the Rebels mauled the Mustangs (62-0) last night and knowing last weeks score between HI and Burkeville (41-6) I believe that the Cards have got their work cut out to hang with the Rebs.

The Rebel defense is looking stout (allowing 19 points in three district games - 6 points per contest) 6 of the points came off a busted play at Colmesneil on a bocked punt block attempt and 6 came on a short field TD against HD when Cook took a punt inside the Rebel 5. It still took three plays for the cats to score then. In district the Rebels have only given up 270 total yards for an average of only 90 per game.

the offense is explosive (scoring 133 points in district - 44+ per contest) all of that is with the passing game stuffed safely in their pocket (less than 15 attempts in district and three of those went for TD's), the Rebels have 1049 yards in district (350 per game and with it 98% of that on the ground it makes sense that the Rebels can and will continue to just pound on people until someone stops them.

The 2008 Rebels are loaded with seniors most of which have been playing varsity since they were freshmen and a number of those started as freshman and all but a couple of them did beginning as sophomores. The juniors and sophomores on the squad had the benefit of a full JV schedule last year and they were last years district champs all be that only a couple of other teams play JV schedules.

The Rebels have four games left. You have to play every one of them as they come, next is High Island, I know that they have had to overcome a great deal to get on the field. I believe that they used that emotion and their talent to come out on the winning side when they played Burkeville a couple of weeks ago. But they have their game with West Hardin today and it will tell more about the Cards than their game with the Mustangs.

If the Cards win today then next weeks game pits the only two undefeated teams in 23A. If they do not well that leaves only the Rebels and Oilers undefeated.

I say again you have to play the game but from where I sit, its not looking too good for the Cardinal faithful.

  9. The Rebels "Just Did It!" and it was a complete domination of the Mustangs.

    Rushing

    Rebels 458  (Crain 186  Massengil 143)      Mustangs -52

                    14+ yard per carry average

    Passing

Rebels 75    (0 attempts in second half)    Mustangs 9

                    1 for a 38 yard touchdown

    Total Yardage

Rebels 532        Mustangs -43 (The Mustangs had positive yards only in the 4th quarter and that was 7)

    First Downs

Rebels 20          Mustangs 1 (It came in the 3rd quarter)

    Negative Yardage Plays

    Rebels 0          Mustangs 19

    Punts

Rebels 0          Mustangs 12 (Rebels blocked one)

    Touchdowns

    Rebels 8                                                                Mustangs 0

        Crain 2, Massengil 2, Landis 2, Nichols 1 & Royal 1

    Field Goals

    Rebels 3                                                                Mustangs 0

        Swift  - 16 yards, 29 yards and 38 yards

The Rebels kicked all three of these on 1st down and two of them inside the Mustang 10 yard line

The Mustangs did block one attempt that is the only series that the Rebels did not score except the victory kneel down at the end.

Only one minor injury to one player, he was pulled out at half, but will be back next week.

In three district games the Rebels have scored 133 while only giving up 19.

In watching the Rebels for the past few years they look as hungry for "W's" as I have ever seen. The Rebels have four games remaining and they will have to play them all one at a time, but I have to say that I like our chances to go undefeated in district and to claim the district 23A crown this year.

Keep up the great work Rebels

  10. It is a Friday night, the temperature is finally making it feel like fall, almost everyone has the lights back on and footballs will be flying all over the state. I does not get much better than this.

I can say that I believe it will be a great weekend for District 23A. You can't help but feel good about the Sharks getting back on the field and what it will mean to the people of Sabine Pass. I still say that the Bulldogs are showing lots of class by not charging the SP fans to get into the game. I will be waiting to see how that one turns out.

When HD takes on Chester it could be interesting as AC is not playing for Bobcats which is a big part of the offense. I know that many in HD land thought that they would walk through 23A and into the playoffs. I guess that is why you still have to play them one at a time.

High Island playing West Hardin could bring a shake up in the district race both are undefeated in district, but I suggest that neither overlook the other as they look down the road to their meeting with the Rebels.

To the Rebels and their faithful, we know what we have to do, we know what we are supposed to do, we know what we practiced doing now lets turn on the lights and turn out the Mustangs.

To all the teams be good sportmen and stay injury free.

To fans go wrap up and go enjoy your teams game tonight or Saturday.

    Go Rebels

  11. Rain might make a difference in this one, but don't count on it. When the Rebels scored 55 on Colmesneil two weeks ago they were not trying to run up the score, they ran the same three maybe four plays the entire second half.

Coach Williams did not try to run up the score, but he did not and would not tell players who are hungry to play "don't score!". Anyone who has played knows that injuries happen when players are not going all out. Bad things happen any way, but telling kids to let up is a sure fire way to get someone sidelined to the rest of the season.

The Rebels have some lofty goals, but rest assured that they will not help their cause by not getting in all the work they can to improve timing, blocking and making sure that each and every player is performing to the best of their ability. Besides "The Battlefield" drains pretty good and the Rebels should still roll.

  12. It has always seemed funny to me that if Shaq really wanted to make teams pay for fouling him, then he would spend every off season in the gym shooting free throws so that it would pay off for his team on the scoreboard.

It is another odd numbered year and time for the Spurs and Duncan to get the fifth ring and of course it will be before Shaq gets a fifth, which I doubt that he ever will.

    Go Spurs Go

  13. I believe that the Cardinals even being on the field is a victory for them, just ask Sabine Pass.

I am not sure how it will come out on the scoreboard? I can say that I since I have not seen either team as the Rebels have yet to face them.

The Oilers lost a lot from last years team, but I still believe they have enough to come out on top in this one. We will see this weekend and then the next couple of weeks as the Rebels travel to HI and then WH comes to Evadale on Halloween night.

  14. This is a game that Hull-Daisetta has to win or it will be difficult for them to make it into the playoffs. I watched the Bobcats last Friday and aside from the fact that the Rebels kept the Bobcat defense on the field most of the night, the Bobcats are their own worst enemy picking up more personal fouls than you could count.

Chester has improved, but I believe that the Bobcats will make it a long night for the Jackets, with or without Cook in the Bobcat backfield.
