1. The high school Gladiator organization will be holding tryouts for the 15U/16U Fall team Saturday, August 28 at 10AM and Sunday, August 29, at 4PM at West Brook High School.  This tryout is open to all 15U/16U players.  We are a high school organization that works to prepare our players for the next level.  If interested, please show up 45 minutes prior to scheduled times.  If you are unable to attend, but would like to play, please call Dave Morrow at 409-658-9279.  We will schedule a make up tryout later in the week.  Thank you, Dave Morrow www.gladiatorbaseball.org
 2. SE Texas Gladiators will be hosting a tryout for our 15U/Incoming Freshmen team for the Fall.  This team will be for players entering high school this Fall.  Tryouts will be in August.  The season will run Sept. - Dec.  We will use this team as a basis for next summer's 15U team. If interested in trying out, please e-mail me or PM me.  I will give you specific dates, as soon as our Summer season ends this month. Thank you, Dave Morrow, Gladiator Baseball e-mail: [email protected]
 3. Gladiators won their second game in East Cobb over the McCann Braves by a score of 3-2.  Kyle Markum of Hamshire-Fannett had the game winning RBI for Gladiators.  Next game Thursday against a very tough Dirtbags team from North Carolina.
 4. Gladiators won their first game in East Cobb by a score of 7-0 against Huntington, WV.  Austin Stone (PNG) was the pitching leader for the team, throwing 4 innings, giving up 1 hit, no walks, and striking out 9.  Offensively, the Gladiators were led by Rony Sanchez (PA-Memorial) who went 2 for 4, with a double, a stolen base and 3-RBI.
 5.

FPHS - You do realize that the kid that you said should have been on the 12 man roster, his dad was a coach in the league.  The kid that got the last spot on the team is being raised by a single mom and he was not on our "select" team.  As a "fan" I'm sure you new that.  Kinda shots down you arguement. As for your last post, I'm not going to respond because I don't know what your talking about.
if i remeber correctly, i think jm and ah were on the same team----------- please, name me one coach (or asst coach for that matter), whose child didnt make all-stars?  and yes, alternates are all-stars and you dont know what I'm talking about? what, west end not following rules?  heck, y'alls president doesnt even live in the boundaries!  "Line up kids, say the LL pledge, then lie about where you live"---whats that teaching these children?
FPHS, in response to your question...Matt Morrow was a coach whose kid did not make all-stars.  Shoots down your theory and highlights your sour grapes mentality.  He put in countless hours for other kids, so they could become better players and better kids.  His kid did NOT make all-stars, not even alternates. I was president of WELL from 2004-2006.  I know exactly what West End 1 is talking about.  We would have kids petition to come play in our league because their league was so poor.  We DID have kids who said, if I can't play here, I won't play, because their league was no fun.  Parents ruined their league, as they so often do, in Little League.  My son played little league from age 6-14.  We played all-stars at every level.  I have coached little league teams at West End and Amelia/West End.  I have coached all-star teams that have gone all the way to state.  Let me give you a little insight of what happens in the coaches meeting during all-star selection. Coaches put up players on their team they feel are worthy of all-star status.  Either they had a good season or have a past of being good ball players.  The all-star coach listens to arguments from all coaches as to why a particular player should or should not be an all-star.  The various feed back is weighed by all coaches, then they vote on who should make the team.  There is no smoke filled, back room deals.  The players that make it are generally your best "athletes" who can play multiple positions.  As a coach, if you are in an all-star game, with substitution rules as they are, you want a player who can play many positions.  It is very possible to get in a jam, where your pitcher, who plays left field, needs to come in and pitch.  If you don't have an adequate player to fill that spot, while staying within Little League substitution rules, you are doomed. Stats mean a little, not a lot.  You may have your #7 hitter, who platoons throughout the season, who hits .333. But since he platoons, he may have only 12 at bats for the year.  Perhaps he got walked twice and hit by pitch one.  Now his official at bats drop to 9.  Lets say he gets on base 3 times via hit.  Out of those 3 hits, lets assume two of those hits went off the glove of a fielder.  Was it a hit or an error?  Since you have a parent making that call, lets say they give them a hit, even though it was an error.  Now junior is batting .333, when in fact, had those hits been ruled errors, junior would be batting.000.  My point is, stats in little league mean nothing.  Many times it is a judgement call by coaches as to who is the better athlete and who can handle more advanced pitching and hitting.  Which is why select players have an edge.  They are used to advanced pitching and hitting, as they have seen it before. 3 years ago, a group from Lake Charles went on to the Little League World Series.  Guess what?  They all played select ball.  Check out other teams in the upcoming world series.  Go to Nations or USSSA and look up the names.  I'll bet you see a majority of those players on a select roster.  These are the rules of today, live by them or die by them.  But to cast aspersions of players making the team because of their dads coaching is not fair.  When I coached Little League, we had a number of players who did not make it, even coaches kids.  Sour grapes, no matter how you package it, is still sour grapes. Finally, as for WEST END's president being outside the boundaries, is that bad?  When I relinquished my presidency at West End 4 years ago, it was hard to find a replacement.  People would rather sit in the stands and complain about how bad things are, rather than roll their sleeves up and make a difference.  I applaud Scott for stepping up and taking the reigns.  He has done an incredible job for all the boys and girls, not just the ones that live "outside the boundaries".

If injured, the player is not eligible until released by the doctor. If player is playing school ball he is not eligible to play if they conflict.
He still has to participate as an eligible player in 60 % of the games.   I believe that a player who was injured all but two games would not be eligible for all stars.
Actually, we had that situation happen at Amelia/West End Baseball 3 years ago.  One of our catchers broke his hand.  Missed most of the season.  But because he played in all games he was eligible, he qualified for All Stars and played.  No questions asked through district, sectionals, and state.
 7.
Wow...1 week into the summer select season and, already, someone (e.g. the Gladiators) slams the Sun Devils.  It really gets old  -- understandable but old. As a previous poster noted, we do recruit players that we believe are legitimate players at the next levels.  We offer them an opportunity and some accept, and others do not.  On the list that was posted earlier on this thread, only 1 of those players is 'new' to our program.  I would not suppose to know what his (or his parents) thought process was but I would imagine that the fact that we have had 5 classes come through our program, and seen 75 of our players get college scholarships, might be a good reason.  Our record in the draft is equally good (we had 13 current or former Sun Devils drafted this year alone).  I also suspect the quality of competition and instruction may have played a role as did the 'word of mouth' from his HS teammates/opponents.  Maybe the simple fact that, on the HS Home Run thread, he noted that a Sun Devil was the leader.  Performance counts, too. Sometimes, people are better served tending to their own house (or, here, coaching and improving their own players instead of worrying about what we are doing).  That's what we do and that's why it works.  And, Jeff:  we have more of your guys calling us instead of us calling them.  I think that says it all, don't you? Best of luck to all teams, and players, this summer.
What gets old is the ignorance and intolerance some people have for multiple teams in SE Texas.  As the person who formed the Gladiator High school program, I have no problems with the Sun Devils. In fact, I feel it is healthy to have a number of programs available to our SE Texas kids.  The thing about Select baseball, is that it has drifted away from the most important thing-the kids - and moved to that of egos and feelings of importance by those than run those organizations.  Speaking for the Gladiators, I am happy that all people have a place to play, regardless of team colors.  In previous posts, I have defended Sun Devils, and others, from ignorant comments made by people not affiliated with the running of our organization.  The "Gladiators" did not make disparaging comments about Sun Devils - 643 did.  Let's get that straight. Second, regarding the person in question, who left Gladiators, I would run through a wall for that kid.  If Sun Devils is where the player and parents feel is more appropriate home, good for them.  I hope the player gets the many accolades coming to him. Third, we have players playing for us, who are former Sun Devils.  So what?  643, please stop including Gladiators in your disparaging comments.  We simply want what is best for each kid in this area, who aspires to achieve greatness - whether it be with Sun Devils or Gladiators. MIF, I would appreciate it if you would not paint Gladiators with such a broad brush.  Obviously, the person making the comments, 643, has personal issues that (s)he wish to use this forum as a way to vent. As for Gladiator Baseball, we are in this for the kids.  We have 3 teams of 18U and 3 teams of 16U.  As I write this, I am in Phoenix, AZ watching our 16U USA Baseball team compete in the USA Baseball West Championships.  Yes, other teams have been here.  But what is important is that THESE kids get a chance to be here to show their talent before USA Baseball scouts, with the hopes of becoming a member of the USA national team.  Who cares whether it is Gladiators or Sun Devils these kids have written across their chest. The most important thing is that we have 18  kids - 15 and 16 year old players from SE Texas here representing our area in the 2010 USA championships.  In this thread, we have lost focus on the big picture - giving our kids opportunities.  Instead, we are focusing on the petty things of WHO is giving these kids the opportunities.  Let's focus on the big picture, there are opportunities for our area players.  Isn't that what is most important? By the way, Jeff is Rounder17. Dave Morrow Gladiator Baseball
 8. West Orange Stark wins 4-2.  Great pitching performance by Zane Anderson!
 9.
Who is pitching?
Zane Anderson - WOS, Statum - OF Now 4-1
 10. Great game Mustangs.  Sitting behind home plate was a great perspective to watch Zane Anderson pitch.  What a pitcher!  Nearly every ball had movement.  He rarely threw back to back fast balls. Tarkington never got a real solid stroke on the ball.  Darnall had a huge bomb too.  The most impressive thing though was the patience of the WO-S hitters.  They laid off the breaking balls and made Tarkington's pitcher throw them fast balls.  Which, for Darnall, paid off.  Way to go Coach Riojas and the rest of the Mustangs!!
 11. Without a doubt, one of the more entertaining high school games this year.  Pearland's catcher is the real deal.  A switch hitter who can throw runners out from his knees.  BigMac Ag was right, a number of pro scouts in attendance to watch a very talented Pearland team.  But that make the Brooks win even sweeter.  Warner was lights out on the mound for WB and Reggie Wilson had some very key hits.  Good job Bruins.  That was a heck of a ball game.  Justin Harmon is an unsung hero because he beat out an infield roller to get on base before Boom hit the bomb.  Harmon was the tying run and Boom was the winning run.  Rubber game in Clear Lake Saturday.  Good luck Bruins!!
 12. Any graduating seniors that have not signed on to play college ball, but would like to give it one last shot, please contact me.  We have availability on our 18U teams for players who are dedicated to giving it one last opportunity to catch the eye of a college.  Our summer schedule consists of 5 weekend tournaments during June and July.  These tournaments will mostly in Texas and Louisiana college venues.  Please PM me or call me at 409-658-9279.  Thanks, Dave Morrow - Gladiator High School Program.
 13.
Why outside these counties?
You know....you are right.  While we have seen a multitude of local games this year, we may not have seen everyone.  So, no matter where you are from, PM me to let me know of your interest for our 17U teams.  Sophmores and juniors only please.
 14. The SE Texas Gladiator High School program is set to begin our season within a month.  We are seeking sophomores and juniors to fill out our 17U teams(we plan to have 3 teams).  In order to be considered, you must have been an active member of your high school varsity squad.  Specifically, we are looking outside the Jefferson, Orange, Hardin Counties.  We feel we have a pretty good knowledge of the local schools' players. We plan to play an active schedule with most trips within Texas and the contiguous states of Texas.  If interested in a tryout, please PM me here or call.  My phone number is 409-658-9279.  Current sophomores and juniors only. Dave Morrow SE Texas Gladiator High School program
 15. I agree with adminababeruth, Sean O'Connell is one of the underrated players in the area.  He is hitting the ball very well.  He has good speed and can track a fly ball well. Orangefield was dominating tonight.  Kelly was missing 4-5 of their seniors due to Spring Break.  Regardless, Orangefield was the better team.  They hit the ball solidly from 1-9 hitters.  Townsend made a mistake pitch and Angelle made him pay for it.  Very impressed by Angelle's offense tonight. With the seniors gone, Kelly got a chance to play a few players of the future.  Will Darling, a freshman, looked very good on the mound for the 2 innings he pitched.  Statum taught the young freshman a lesson on location, by kindly depositing an offering over the right field fence.  But overall, a very good showing from a rising freshman in the area. No doubt, Orangefield is the better team.  But Kelly has some very good young talent.  Look for them to make their mark in the next few years.
 16.

I dont know the exact story but Holsomback and Head Coach Kevin Lane got into a arguement and Holsombeack drug up. All I have to say is it must have been something bad for holsomback to quit
Lack of mental toughness???  Just a thought.
not the holmback i know
It was just a thought.  What happened to the coach just get on him or did the coach touch him?  I don't know him but it sounds like he got his feelings hurt.  It says he quit right in the middle of the game?  Maybe suck it up a little bit???   Finishing the game with your teammates seems like a very unselfish and noble thing to do.
Where does it say he got up in the middle of the game and quit?  Didn't see a post on that.  You the coach? I know Holden.  He is an exceptional young man.  Yes, he is a good ball player.  But more importantly, he is an incredible young man.  I know the story on his leaving, but will not post it here. I think it is pathetic to question the mental toughness of a 16 year old kid on a blog like this.  You should be ashamed of yourself.  But let me tell you about Holden.  He is incredibly tough.  I have had the honor of playing against him and having him play for us this past Fall on Gladiators.  Holden has had many games where he is bordering on heat exhaustion.  He plays hard to the point of vomiting during the game.  The coach recognizes he is experiencing heat exhaustion and pulls him from the game.  Holden begs to go back in to help his team.  At practice, the kid works his tail off.  DO NOT QUESTION THE MENTAL TOUGHNESS OF HOLDEN.  You will only embarrass yourself.  He is a class act on the field and off. Jackhammer, how dare you question the integrity of a young man, 16 years old, on a public blog like this one...especially when it is Holden Holsemback.  He is a class act!!  Administrator, is this really what this blog is about?  Ripping a 16 year old kid who is working hard to make himself better?  There are other circumstances at work here.  Keep an eye on this team.  You will see it is not a player, but a program at fault here.
 17. Gladiator Baseball is looking for a 14U player interested in joining one of the premier organizations is SE Texas.  We are looking for a player who is a good hitter, fielder, and/or pitcher. Here is what you get as a Gladiator....access to the best coaching in SE Texas.  Our coaches include Morgan Walker, Jed McBride, Sam Moore, Chris Fackler, Jesse Rojas, Derrick Spivey, Jesse Floyd, and Jeff Moye.  As a Gladiator, you will be on the fast track towards all the training for you to go to the next level (JV, Varsity, college).  Our coaches have been there and can help you get there too. If interested, please PM me or call me at 658-9279.  Thank you, Dave Morrow
 18. I know its a little late.  My daughter is 14 (turns 15 in November) and needs to find a select team to play for.  She has a decent arm and is beginning to pitch (meaning she throws strikes, but needs to work on her velocity).  She has played Spindletop softball - made all stars each year.  But needs to find a more serious team to play for. Anybody have any openings?  Please PM me if there is an opportunity for tryout.  Thank you.
 19. Taylor Townsend had a no-hitter going into the 7th inning.  He also doubled in the first run for Kelly.  The defense for both sides was incredible.  In fact, the right fielder for LCM made a beautiful diving catch that saved two runs.  One of the best high school games I have seen in a while.
 20. The SE TX Gladiators will have an "unsigned" 18U summer team, beginning immediately at the conclusion of the high school season.  We will play in a number of college showcase tournaments throughout the summer.  We want to go to tourneys where the players will be seen.  If you are an unsigned senior, interested in this team, please contact Dave Morrow at 658-9279, [email protected] or PM me here.
 21. The SE TX Gladiator 14U team is looking to add one more player.  We will be having private tryouts in the coming two weeks.  If you are interested, call Dave Morrow at 658-9279 or PM me. SE TX Gladiator Baseball Organization currently runs from ages 14-18.  This coming summer, we will have one 14U, three 16U, and three 18U teams.  As a member of the 14U Gladiator team, you will be a part of a rapidly growing organization with some of the best select coaches in SE TX.  Please contact me soon, as we begin tournament play in a month.  Thank you.
