  1. If you were at this game, it was clear as day why we lost. It was a great game for about 2qts and then one player on our team decided that he needed to no longer play team ball and turn the ball over 4 straight trips. Then our coach decided it was a good idea to sit our all region PG and our best shooter for most of the 3rd qrt. Our two best scorers and barely touched the ball after dominating the first half because their ALL REGION PG WAS ON THE BENCH! Who by the way was cooking as well in the first half! They lost because of a selfish player (who by the way had a tech and a flagrant foul that resulted into 4pts in the first half, then tried to fight Sears after coming out the locker room when RJ came to shake his hand) and horrible subbing. Hats off to HJ and Coach Davis for a perfect game plan in the 2nd half forcing the ball into that player's hand and watching it perfectly unfold. His guys came out and smelled blood in the waters. Sears was amazing, Isaiah Malbrough was the game MVP for me. HJ played team ball in the second half, HF didn't. This lost was solely on our coach unable to control one of his players and not benching him, along with bad subbing

I Guess come Monday the kids have an apology coming from the Coach or maybe a reason to why he pulled them...šŸ—£

A coach who wants to keep the trust of his locker room will. I don't know any greats that I've studied or gotten advice from who never have. As coaches, we are human not God and will make mistakes or decisions that cost games. It happens, we're not perfect šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļø

I disagree with part of that statement. Livingston is very capable of beating anyone at their place. I gotta admit Iā€™m surprised that Livingston looks to be better than Huffman this year. The key hasnā€™t changed, take care of home court and steal one on the road to win it.Ā

HJ will beat Livingston with absolutely no problems. They almost lost to HFs second string players at home and was dominated by HF just last week. Like I said I have no idea why he sat all his starters that long, but it cost them the game. HF had multiple chances to win that game last night, their guys just couldn't knock down tough shots down the stretch late to seal the game and allowed Livingston to stay around and get the lead late in the 4th. But defensively they caused a lot of Livingston turnovers with the press and full court man, just couldn't capitalize on them at a high % like the starters do. They literally had 3 chances within 20 seconds to hit a 3 to tie it šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļø. They played hard and gave Livingston all they could handle. HJ crushing Livingston with their press period.Ā

If all 5 starters got pulled and have no idea why 24 games into the season I donā€™t need to hear anything else. HF will catch a break getting Huffman next week at Hamshire. That would have been a tough one in Huffman and a 3rd loss will all but eliminate them from title contention.Ā

HF is the only team anywhere near the same level as HJ in this district. HJ has no threat outside of HF in the coming weeks and even if they fall to HF in the second meeting, they will not lose to anyone else and still be champs. Fixing whatever that was last night and getting prepared for the playoffs should be their focus right now. The district championship is pretty much HJs now.Ā

I will say that seems a bit strange. Could really cost them in the long run.
    Ā

Just speculation, but could the starters not be doing what the coach is wanting them to do? Maybe they are listening to the parents in the bleachers rather than the coach. Many coaches would rather lose with kids who are willing to be coached than win with players that do what they want or what their parents want. As I said that is pure speculation.Ā

As a coach I can say why he clearly pulled them at the beginning. They came out a little flat on both ends, but as far as the whole game and all 5? I have no idea at all. Keep in mind they were on a 6 game win streak with those 5 starters. None of them know what happened or why after the initial pull.Ā

Sometimes people watch the same game and see 2 very different versions. I been in the gyms a long time and usually when a coach sits his starters itā€™s because he isnā€™t happy with their performance lol

I said they came out slow lol. I'm a high school coach and yes I have pulled players to wake them up as well, but not every starter for the whole game. You'll eventually get out matched in certain situations and positions down the stretch. That's what happened. It was a gamble to try and prove a point I think and it didn't plan out. At the end of the day they are your best 5 for a reason. Sitting all 5 was a bold move for whatever reason he had and it backfired with a lost. They got pulled mid 1st and didn't get back in until after the half. He then pulled 3 starters about a qrt into the 3rd and the other two a little bit after. It was all back ups from then on out. Like I said the second unit gave a solid effort and battled, could have won, but they were going up against Livingston's best and came up short.Ā

Iā€™m no math wizard but the final at Woodville showed them beating Livingston 60-47. They also beat Anahuac by 6. Ā

They beat Anahuac by 6 the first game, blew them out the second game the next day. Anahuac is a sold team, very athletic, and well coached. Don't sleep on them. They only had 2 losses before playing HF back to back in that TournamentĀ

Starting to question your memory or knowledge or both.

The score last week was 60-47. Far from a 30 point win for HF.

I find it very hard to believe that a first year head coach would tank a district game, particularly one this early in the district season.

They were up by 30 before he pulled his starters to start the 4th. I should have clarified. The game wasn't close at all, HF controlled it from start to finish. Livingston's shooter hit four 3s in the 4th of that game to make it respectable. Kid got a strap for sure! Not sure why he pulled them in this game for the whole game, but he did šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļø.

I called this one yesterday afternoon in a conversation with a friend. HF beat Livingston this past Saturday in a tournament in a close game. This had the feeling of the ultimate trap game!Ā

Nah they won by almost 20pts last weekend vs Livingston. Coach made a decision to sit all his starters for the majority of the game, not sure why, but Livingston basically beat HFs second unit. I was at the game and really can't tell you what was going on honestly or why the decision was made. They came out a little slow, but nothing really unusual for a high school basketball team, happens from time to time even with nationally ranked ones. Coach pulled his starters and only really played his second and third units. They played hard and went back and forth with Livingston taking the lead multiple times, but they couldn't hold on to win. No one starter played more then an entire quarter and all of them sat the entire 4th qtr until one got sub with 2mins left. Was definitely strange and none of the starters know why šŸ¤·šŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļø. Livingston players and coach did what they was supposed to do and took advantage of the opportunity. Hopefully whatever caused the decision gets worked out. They were definitely on a role winning 6 straight.Ā

    Just a few observations:

(1). Analytics and Offensive stats are a waste of paper in high school basketball .They can be very misleading by outings against weaker competition .Ā
(2). The best judge of a ā€œgo to playerā€ are the kids themselves. The opposing defense may limit that playerā€™s ability to get the ball but the players know who should have it.

(3). If we have a coach at any level who doesnā€™t know if his best players are on the floor during crunch time heā€™s probably in the wrong profession. I havenā€™t seen a local coach who doesnā€™t know where his best players are.Ā

    Yeah ok šŸ™„

Whew!Ā  Sounds like it was a great game that came down to making STOPS.Ā  I learned a long time ago that if you score 30 but you give up 40 you gon lose lol.Ā  Analytics is good and all but that only applies on the offensive end.Ā  I get so tired of hearing "we lost the game but I had 25" lol. Kids that end up playing on the next level find out very quickly that defense gets them on the floor and keeps them there.Ā  Just my opinion tho......

Defensive down the stretch and overall rebounding determined the game. Plus some big shots by HJ (Davis) sealed it. Was a good game, the better team won that night.

  12. As a varsity coach myself, I can tell you 100% during close or tough games we do get tunnel vision and sometimes will get caught up only focus on one thing during games. That's why we have assistant coaches. I've made many mistakes in subbing, calling timeouts, play calls, etc....over my career that has cost games. It happens and any good coach will admit to it and apologize to his players and staff for it. Coach Kenebrew is that type of coach and the players and parents respect that about him. No the season isn't going as many imagine, but I knew there was a possibility it wasn't and have said that much to other parents when they criticized Coach Kenebrew. He's a good coach that had certain expectations or ideas of the type of players he had top to bottom and finding out otherwise. I believe he'll make adjustments and get them on track.

I agree.. Coaches wonā€™t normally let his best players sit that long unless he is tripping or the others are handling up. Maybe the coach and his assistants dropped the ball. One thing for sure based on these comments the coach has to do a better job of handling the stands because yā€™all attitudes will filter over to the kids. Just my opinion. No fun when that happens.Ā

No one on the feed I feel had an attitude other then a couple like yourself who misunderstood comments. Maybe you need to go back and read. Some gave their negative opinions about my kid that I felt were false and I gave them facts and statistics, but honestly I can see the games over and over plus all the stats and the shot charts. They can only see what's in their head and the stats from maxprep (which many obviously didnt). And our parents and fans are great people who bend over backwards for all the kids and support them regardless. Let's normalize being wrong sometimes about what we think we saw and simply apologize for it. You know, like grown adults do?Ā

He started the OT. And the shots Iā€™m talking about came in OT.

I donā€™t want hear about some lame excuse ā€œI got caught up in the gameā€ ā€¦.you actually believe that??? Ā if 23 is suppose to be the manā€¦.then a coachisnā€™t gonna sit him for a qtr and a halfā€¦.especially in a close game down the stretchā€¦ā€¦..He didnā€™t sub him in for some reasonā€¦..

yes the pg did have turnoversā€¦..his effort is what stood out to me Ā especially on def. Ā effort you either have it or you donā€™tā€¦.Ā

notmany championships are won by offense.

    Ā

    Ā

    Ā

    Ā

Lol he didn't start the OT at all, came in midway, and scored the only points for the team in OT. So the shots you are referring to wasn't by him. What the coach said to the team and him was weird but it's what he said. I actually wasn't there at all, watched part of the game on a live feed and the rest later that day on film. So yeah I know exactly when, where, and why things happen.

Our pg is a 100% all heart player who really only turns the ball over when the other primary ball handler isn't in the game which is my son. The opposing team traps him when that happens. Also that was just his 3rd or 4th game of the year as he plays football. He just made mistakes.

If thats what you take as an apology than Im truly Sorry for ruffling your feathers(Cardinal 1)....The point is: Analitics dont determine whether or not a kid can go. 2 way players keep college coaches with there jobs...Not AnaliticsĀ

Very true which is why he's getting phone calls from colleges. You have to be good in multiple areas on both ends.Ā

Ill be there evaluating talent to help try and get a kid an opportunity to receive as much help financially towards his education in the near future. Im just a guy whos well respected with an eye for talent and word of honesty towards talent. Theres on an average of 3 to 5 kids whom have an opportunity to attend 1 of the power 7 conferences in Basketball in the Greater Houston area and im truthful as it gets with a College Coach and i dont go on potential or analitics. I Live in the Now era of hoops. Zebras šŸ‘€ it all...

I can respect that, but still the same. Don't make assumptions and go off on rants when you didn't fully understand the comment or purpose. Just ask for clarity

I for no means came at you about yours or Analitics or stats...Stats dont show effort or heart and thats something no paper will ever show. And for you asking who i am doesnt matter because i know who i am and i know that your upset about the way things have been going ever since your full team has came back from football. I will tell you this....Not sure of your sons classification but Highschool juniors are whats on deck as far as recruiting goes. Seniors have had there last summer and if not a personal friend of the Coach who may be a college Coach HF will not be visited unless playing against a possible recruit. Enjoy the ride with your son and stop criticizing or get back into Coaching and make a difference. Its funny as well as this thread and im one to keep the blood pumping cause i know every kid at HF as well as HJ....Zebras have opinions 2...

Again I wasn't CRITICIZING AT ALL. I was correcting the opinions of others with statistics and facts they didn't know. So I take it that's your version of an apology for misunderstanding what I said and going on an unnecessary rant about coaches and parents šŸ¤¦šŸ¾ā€ā™‚ļø. As far as HF being visited by a college coach, they already have and will have others.

  18. How about folks start practicing speaking facts about the games and players based purely on the analytics and not their own biases or opinions. Would cut out a lot of confusion and kill assumptions. If you don't know the specific numbers of the game, then don't speak specifically about any player other then to compliment. Criticism based on personal opinion and not the numbers is very dangerous and can escalate quickly as we can see in this thread.Ā

Are you serious...As a retired Coach i would Never apologize to a Parent for not subbing there kid. If anyone i would apologize to would be the player. I truly understand the heartfelt passion about how a parent feelsĀ about there baby but the day i have to talk down on my kids teammate because of what i think i know than i need leave the talking alone. Parents....your being recruited as well as your kid and the only part about a parent a Coach can see is character because they dont need you to play. I must admit ive seen almost every kid in this area play at one time or another and if i knew all parents could handle constructive criticism i would be honest but since i know some cant i just keep my 2 cents to myself and keep it moving. No matter what makes of this you as person are wrong for criticizing your sons teammate for personal belief cause it merits no personal gain. At the end of the day Coach is gonna play who he believes is gonna get it done and all your gonna do is drive a wedge in your son and his teammate's and with #2 being the primary ball handler he may not get the touches he wants or deserves because of your emotions. Please as a parent of an athlete...Stop..your really not making it easier on your child...In the words of KP...Carry On...

He apologized to his players. What are you talking about? šŸ¤£ He admitted it was on him as any good coach would do. I've done it plenty of times as how can we teach accountability to these kids and not hold ourselves accountable for our mistakes. I didn't criticize anyone, others did, I simply stated statistics that explained losts while giving kudos to HJ kids for controlling the little things and following the game plan by their coach which anyone who really understands the game and how to analyze it unbias does. Our kids didn't at all as a team, follow what their coach laid out. The two kids you're mentioning are good friends and have been playing with each other since 8 years old during the summer and have already discussed the analytics with each other as they do after every game in order the get better. His dad and I have been friends for over 20 years. You can't have a bias mind when reading comments my man. You'll make assumptions that aren't accurate at all. I find it funny you came for me for correcting others assumptions about my kid using actual stats and facts but not them for their assumptions based on their personal opinions šŸ¤”. As if telling spreading rumors about a kids character and play on the court without looking at the analytics which are easy to find on maxpreps is ok. Who are you anyway?

  20. 1 hour ago, whsalum said:

Iā€™ll be the first to admit Iā€™m watching as a fan. Iā€™ll also agree youā€™re watching as a dad. # 23 has a ton of potential, especially on the offensive end. What I saw the other night was a player with very little big game experience that wasnā€™t quite sure how to step up in the moment. Defensively I wasnā€™t impressed with HF. I still stick by my pre season prediction. I think HJ is clearly the best club in the district. Once again we probably arenā€™t going to agree on any of this and thatā€™s ok. Thatā€™s what these threads are for.

You can't step up if you dont have the ball down the stretch and he scored the majority of their points in the second half. Nothing you can do when your teammates are jacking up shots outside of the offensive rotation and not moving the ball to the mismatches. Anyway he went 7/15 scoring 21pts 8rebs 2blks 1stl. The next two leading scorers went 4/12 and the other 4/11 with a combined 10 TOs and 9 total rebs. #5 Denson was the mismatch for us and only got 5 shots going 4/5. He was supposed to get the ball more down low and certainly down the stretch, but didn't. He needed at least 10 touches in this game in the post, but guys failed to follow the plan. Sears scored 24pts, Davis 21pts, and Malbrough 14pts and a big 10 rebs for HJ. #10 for HJ grab 10 rebs as well. I don't speak as a "dad" but as a 100% varsity coach who has been to 4 straight state tournaments and 2 state championships in his division. You are correct about one thing. HJ had the better overall team Friday night as the analytics shows it. They out rebounded HF by double digits and any coach worth his salt will tell you, control the boards and you win the game 9 out of 10 times guaranteedĀ
