Larger schools have nothing to win and everything to lose by playing a school one third their size.  We should consider ourselves lucky that some larger schools will play us.  It's sure not for the money. It has to be out of the respect other coaches had for Coach Barbary and now for Coach Johnston.

Silsbee and new Bridge City are good teams and Diboll might be better than we think. It is hard to keep scheduling  West-Orange Starks when your enrollment keeps dropping yearly.  I like us playing up 1/2 our pre-dist. games but playing all bigger schools can get you pretty banged up.JMO

There was a lot of things that I didn't expect to happen...  I can admit, I was wrong.  I would've just hoped Silsbee could've kept the intensity up from that momentum from the first half...

blah, blah, blah, heard the same thing last year. Put this player here, put that player there. This aint working, gotta do this. You guys......There is a reason Silsbee tries to schedule top notch teams, teams that are not push overs. They make us see our flaws so we can work on them.  And, just like last year watch this year play out. For me, knowing these players the way I do, I'm going to bet on the players to work their butts off and get it going in the right direction. TigerNation!!!

Are we allowed to say it was a great game after all?  Just wondering, and noticed 14.2 labeled it a good game and gave Jasper some props.  Bulldog football is on the upswing imho.  Let's hope this is the sign of good things to come.  We have been pretty notorious slow starters the last few years so maybe there is quite a bit of upside from here.

We definitely have a lot to work on no doubt there.  This game wasn't really as close as the score in my eyes.  Our offense had one big play score, and then maybe gains 10 yds for the field goal.  One big punt return and that's it.  Offensive line needs to improve, it's only game one.  Same can be said for the qb role.  Have to get more time but also when you have a little time need to get rid of it a little quicker.  We definitely need to get the ball in both those speedy receivers hands, but those routes are took too long to come open. Not really worried about the running game at this point.  One difference Adonis is facing is that he doesn't have that big threat of a running qb back there helping open that middle up for him.  One thing about tonight's game,  you are not going to run the ball outside on Newton.
As far as the defensive side of the ball,  well it needs some work too.  I saw some things I liked, at times,  good hitting, some good tackling,  some good coverage and some just outright good plays. However I also saw backs not get covered coming out of the backfield,  Newton getting outside on us too much,  and giving up too many yards on cutbacks. But like I said about the offense, it's early.  We have only had one scrimmage before tonight.
As far as special teams we had kind of a mixed bag.  Some good punts and a few poor ones.  Some god coverage on some of those punts.  Good job on punt returns, didn't really get much of a kick return.  And the bright spot, we have a kicker!!!!  First game of the year we go 2-2 on extra points and get a 45 yd FIELD GOAL!!!
It's only the first game against a always solid Newton team.  Let's just sit back and see how these young men do.

where did that come from, neither team has had a real practice for at least a week until monday. I think they both will be rusty and out of shape. Endurance will be the key late and hope no injuries,,just a good clean game. JMO,

I believe Jasper scored twice & Newton scored twice in controlled scrimmage. Jasper run eight min quarter scored once. Then Newton run eight minute quarter they scored once . Tied 3 apiece. 2nd string didn't score. Great scrimmage both teams looked good

Coach Johnston will never allow an OC to run the score up on anybody.  If Newton has a big lead, starters don't see the second half.  That's the way Curtis Barbary ran his program and it's still run the same way.  You never know when those tables might turn and the object of the game is never to make your opponent look bad.  Coach Thompśon is 80 years old and coached for 54 years and as far as I'm concerned irreplaceable.  But I'm very biased towards my old coach and Sunday school teacher.  He will be missed though.

Very true,  As they have been winning pretty consistently since the early 1970's, it is hard to imagine a time when Newton wasn't winning, but they had that period of time.  In fact, Newton football didn't reach the .500 win percentage mark for its history until 1978.  The 1960s that jimmyw referenced were a period of particular struggle for the Eagles as they went 32-65-2 for a .326 winning percentage.
Even with that, Newton has had a school history that many would be jealous of.

I do  hope that you realize that  all but 2 of those games were before 1974 and Little Cyprus was not even consolidated with  Mauriceville then.  Think about relying  on the past. Now in the  1960's Little Cyprus had Newton's number but they haven't since becoming LC-M.

Yes, last year WO-S would have had Cameron's #, no doubt about that.  I am just talking long term success and the best programs around.    There will be times when a team is either really great or a little down, but in the long run, these teams have proven to be the best of the best in their area.  Those are the matchups I want to see.  Same goes for Newton.

As much as it might have all of us scratching our heads, to the person that really counts, Greg Neece, it makes perfect sense.  One of the perks of doing the football previews is the chance to interact with the coaches about their programs.  I can assure all of you that there are few coaches who professed as much pride in their program as Coach Neece.  But something changed.....we don't know what and as much as some think they have the timetable down, we don't know when.  Chances are good that we will never know.  But that change inside of Greg Neece brought him to realize that he could no longer give his all as the athletic director of Kirbyville ISD and as head coach of the Kirbyville High School football team.  Coming to that realization, he did the most compassionate thing that he could have done for the kids of the program....he stepped aside.
Of course, the move to a quarterback coach position at another school is quite curious. However, let's look at a couple of things.
Now what I am about to say is not is not intended to be a slight of the Kirbyville football program, or athletic program for that matter.  It is an excellent program with a very enthusiastic fan base (I am probably going to get a reminder of how enthusiastic pretty soon).  However, if you would canvass coaches outside of this area to take a look at the Kirbyville program and the Newton program, I wager that many more than we think would not view it as a backward move to leave the head coaching position at Kirbyville, an excellent program known well here in the area, to take an assistant's position at Newton, an excellent program that has some state wide prestige.
Even for those that do view it as a "backward" step, we can't assume that every coach will follow the same pattern of ambition.  What prompted Bob Westerberg last spring to leave Allen where he has reached what many would consider the pinnacle of coaching in Texas, multiple 6A Division I State Championships, for Barbers Hill, whose last state championship appearance was just over 40 years ago?  What prompted Larry Neumann, who told the Port Arthur News in September that loved coaching and that he had no intention of retiring, to, without a public word, file retirement papers with the Nederland ISD at the end of the year?  We think that we may have the windows into these coaches' hearts and souls, but we don't.
Coach Neece, while we will always wonder as to your reasons why, good luck in your new position in Newton.

2wedge, while I share your hope, given the dealings of Dr. Gerald Hudson so far in this saga, I can't share your optimism.
I have no doubt that Coach Barbay will do everything in his power to quell these "concerns" that Dr. Hudson has about his work as an AD.  Because you are right, he has SEVERAL real reasons to remain in Jasper, ranging from his family in Newton, to his girls, to his wife, who I understand also has significant ties to the Jasper community.  While all of us, in and outside of Jasper, acknowledge that, at this point it seems to matter little, if any, to Hudson.  And, yes, I am quite concerned that no matter what steps and what concessions Barbay makes, Hudson and whatever powers that may be driving this will deem it inadequate to relieve these mysterious and, as of yet, unsubstantiated concerns.
If I am wrong, and I hope that I am, good.  But I can't count on that being the case.

Yes and no.  What I mean by that is that popular and/or successful coaches are dismissed.  An example close to Coach Barbay happened in Coldspring a few years back when his brother Bryan, was removed as head coach/AD even though he had the Trojans deep into the playoffs yearly (usually with one of the smaller student populations in the Class).
What certainly separates this from those is, as Coach Huddleston has noted, the public proclamations of Dr. Hudson which appear belied by his private statements and communications.  In fact, there appears to be a trend developing in which Dr. Hudson goes public with denials that Coach Barbay is being dismissed only when facing vocal opposition from the students or public of the Jasper ISD.  This is chronicled pretty well in the latest KJAS.com article:
This is the hidden content, please Sign In or Sign Up On Monday, on the heels of a student walkout to protest Barbay's dismissal on Friday according to a BEVY of reliable sources, Hudson takes to the airwaves of KJAS to denounce the news of Barbay's dismissal as the rumor mill gone wild and states categorically that Coach Barbay is still the AD/HC for Jasper ISD.  As the tide of opposition receeds as the Enterprise and other media dismiss the news as unfounded rumor, Hudson, feeling that the wolves have left the door, fires off an e-mail to Board President Lequin Hildebrandt that he does indeed plan to remove Barbay as HC/AD at Jasper and that March 20th would be his last day.  I suspect that Hudson never intended the contents of that e-mail to be made public.
This, of course, brought the media back to the doors of the Jasper ISD, none to happy that they are now having to report Barbay's apparent dismissal just one day after assuring the listening and reading public that word of his dismissal is unfounded rumor.  Also back at the door of the Jasper ISD is a very angry public who is now real upset as spoken word has now been matched with written one.  And folks organize a rally at the Jasper ISD administration building which was scheduled to take place this morning.  With the wolves, back at the door, Hudson feels compelled to fired off this omnibus memo which he states his intention to "negotiate" with Coach Barbay about a long term commitment.  This satisfies the wolves, who cancel the rally.
Many have taken Hudson's latest statement that Coach Barbay will remain.  I take it as setting the stage for Hudson being able to carry through the intentions he noted in his e-mail to Hildebrandt and, even more sinister, being able to lay that action at the feet of the vanquished Coach Barbay.
This ain't done yet, folks.  It is far from it.

This is the most asinine thing I have ever read. How can it be that he would be reassigned for these reasons with no prior warnings or rebuke on the issues you have stated? This is truly an excuse that is being circulated by those who are well aware of the fact that they have wronged the Barbay family. I was privileged to play for Coach Barbay for two years (one when he was an assistant, and then the first year he was hired as a HC). That was 16 years ago so he was quite a bit younger and I would assume he was quite a bit less refined. Even then he did not exude the attributes that this post has assigned to him, so I have no reason to believe that his character has degraded over the past 16 years. He took over that team before my senior year when most of us seniors felt like we had been abandoned. He made it clear early on that we were in good hands and that he was the right man for the job. He invested in each one of us and had a special place in his heart for the kids on our team who didn't get the support they should have from home. I personally watched him load groups of kids into his truck after practice and take them home because their parents didn't come pick them up. I watched him pick those same kids up at 6:00 am in the summer to make sure they had a ride to the field house to lift weights or participate in summer practices. I watched him make guys miss practice so they could work with their teachers to improve their grades. I've seen him imbed himself in a community and work to make it better. I watched him start a girls softball program and make himself the head coach. He coached softball for years and really enjoyed it! He did all of this while serving as the athletic director, the head football coach, and teaching classes. No one is perfect, and Coach Barbay surely isn't, but to remove him from this position in Jasper for absolutely no reason at all is an injustice that shouldn't be overlooked. This is not something that the community of Jasper should be proud of and if it were me, I would ensure that each board member who is serving now would not be serving any longer once their term ends. I cannot bring myself to root against the kids of JISD, but I will sure as heck root against those adults who have done this. I really hope they get Garrett Morgan-ed again because that is exactly what they deserve.
Barbays, on to bigger and better things. JISD has stolen a lot more from you than a job. This thing extends way beyond employment, but you guys are resilient and will bounce back. I am reminded of a phone call that I had with Coach Barbay right after he was hired as AD/HC at HD, and a few weeks after our previous head coach had left right before my senior year. He said to me:  "I know you are disappointed in the way things have transpired, but you can either cry about it and waste one of the best years of your life, or you can fight like hell to be better than you have ever been to prove that this team is as great as we know it is. And if you make the decision to fight, I promise you I'll be fighting right beside you." He is the kind of man that doesn't just encourage you to fight, but stands shoulder to shoulder with you in the battle. He has fought beside lots of us, and now it's our turn to fight beside him. #BackTheBarbays
