I have to agree with Johnson and Tyler.....the others??????? And just because a coach is "supposed" to win a SC, shouldn't exclude him from coach of the year DBerry. I mean really? You take a bunch of over achieving, undersized kids to the TEXAS State Championship and you say that "what was supposed to happen?" Get out of here with that!

Uhhhhh, what? No WOS players on offense? And coach of the year Matthews? Sorry, not trying to upset any Vidor folk but what?????? WOS is 15-0 and playing in the State Championship for the 3rd year in a row! I know what it is, must have been the AP all state team that picked these for the Beaumont Surprise. Funny how WOS demolished most of the teams that are on that list.

Shame on him for tackling a ball carrier too hard.  Good grief some people need to think before hitting "submit reply."

THIS is the reason WO-S can play a smaller defensive front line. Some people think this is like the NCAA or NFL where you have to have a defensive front that is just as big or comparable in size to compete with a big offensive line. Not true in the way WO-S plays. Navarro had two huge 300+ pounders at tackle, big guards and a center with good size, too. WO-S whipped those boys at the line of scrimmage. It was the same way against Celina last year. This is all accomplished because the players are taught good technique in the use of their hands and feet, as well as an uncompromising demand on all 11 players to pursue the ball carrier. In a nutshell, that is the secret to WO-S's defensive success spanning all of the years Cornel Thompson has been here.

I'm still enjoying the victory last night. Honestly haven't asked but I'll find out later. Sitting here trying to make myself believe all of this is real. When these boys were very young we knew they were special. As they got to be 9, 10, and 11 the reality of what we thought was right before our eyes. We said back then that they had 2 State Championships in them. Now we've lost a few of those boys. A couple of them moved to Beaumont and actually one is visiting Yale this weekend to play football. The pride and joy that these boys have given me and a lot of other people is just amazing. I didn't mean to go on a rant about the boys but it's just what's on my mind right now. Can you even imagine? Three State appearance in a row. Not to mention a State appearance in baseball. Thanks for the ride fellas!!!!

    Keys to Success:
    1.  Tradition? Hardly.  It helps for a team to have some, but not if the tradition includes losing.   Change to "Winning Tradition"
    2.  Coaching Continuity?  Possibly..  But again... not if there is no success.  If your community/players NEVER or RARELY have to
endure a change in coaching philosophy it is a big advantage.  There are no short learning curves in those programs.
One School...ahem....has 30+ years of coaching philosophy.
    3.  Talented Athletes?  No argument there.  A must, though at the High School Level, one truly gifted athlete gets you a big head start.
Throw in 2, 3, 4, 5 at one time.  Good lord.
    4.  Community Support?  It helps tremendously.  No athlete can resist the roar of the crowd.  Its intoxicating.
I personally believe that when talented athletes, not the gifted ones, stay in their community.
Then encourage acceptance of a philosophy that was there before them, with them and will be there after them, then there can
be no confusion of what is expected from them.   Success.

Note:  There has to be multiple examples of success.   Championship trophies, collegiate players, professional players, etc.
Those success stories have to continue to be part of the community to cement the winning philosophy.

For our area, West Orange-Stark got it right.  Lucky? Maybe, all winning traditions need a little luck here and there.
It doesn't matter.  That program has found what works for their community.  Why change it....

I love when WOS comes to town. It brings out the best in our athletes.    Enjoy their brand of football.
The last three years of WOS football is kinda like the Greek Spartans of old.
You can talk noise, no problem, but you'll probably end up at the bottom of a deep hole or piled up next to the others.

    I'm done. Respect.

Unfortunately, coaches today are handcuffed by the "don't work my baby too hard" attitudes of the parents and cant really break these kids down and build that tough, aggressive, yet disciplined attitude that you see at "The WOS."  I know there have been some cases like at HF where the coaches decisions on punishment resulted in some kids being hospitalized but that is a rare occurrence.  I believe in corporal punishment and the use of the paddle....trust me IT WORKS!!! I have experienced it first hand.  Kids shouldn't relate punishment to having to do physical work.  Success and rewards should derive from physical work.  Physical pain should be the result of punishment.
I cant say for sure but my guess is that "Ole' Woddy" still makes his presence known at WOS.  I know this may be a little off the beaten path but there is a direct correlation between the discipline of the athletes, the support of the community to trust in the coaches in the disciplining their kids, and the results of that showing on the field.  Fear is not a bad thing, it keeps you on your toes and keeps you sharp.  WOS uses that to their advantage by striking fear into their opponent.
Those boys are tough, physical, disciplined and flat out nasty.  That doesn't happen because the coaches are walking on egg shells trying to avoid a lawsuit because lil Johnny came home crying because he got tackled too hard or he had to run until he puked.
That being said...you must have the horses, you must have leadership in the group, you must have coaches that players respect, you must have parents that trust in the system, and discipline must be instilled at a young age.   Right or wrong, its only my opinion.  If you want to figure out what it is holding your team back, take a look around.

Strangely enough, Cornel Thompson would not be on that list.  However, I understand (I think) what you are saying with that question.  One of the factors of the success of the Mustang football program has been the continuity of the program from Steve McCarty to Dan Hooks, who was McCarty's right hand man to Thompson, who right hand man to Hooks.  And it does take this sort of continuity to establish a winning program.  This is because as sons and nephews of the original Mustangs know exactly what is expected of them when they show up to run that Mustang Mile and what it takes to earn a silver helmet.
And it is the community support for those standards which allows that continuity to remain.  Believe me there are some...you have seen some of them post here....who wish to take their shots at Coach Thompson.  Every community has their set of village idiots.  And he has not always had the golden touch.  I remember that it took 4 games for Coach Thompson to win his first game at WO-S as head coach and that he insisted on moving out of the spread to the I formation.  Even through all of those the community continued to trust Coach Thompson and believe that his decisions, his words and his action were intended for two purposes, to make the West Orange-Stark Mustangs a stronger football team and to make the individual members of that team better people.  You will never see Cornel Thompson saddled with a derogatory nickname from Mustang fans or you won't see "For Sale" signs in his yard after the next loss, which although I find unlikely, could occur as soon as this weekend.  You won't see people calling Orange County Sheriff Keith Merritt or seeking an investigation from Orange County DA John Kimbrough for practices that parents think are "a little too strenous."  You won't because even those who might not care for Coach Thompson respect him in the community.
And of course, you need stellar athletes.  Coach Thompson has acknowledged that himself that you need that. hence the now infamous statement that "You can't win the Kentucky Derby with a mule."  And yes, this band of athletes is special, on both sides of the ball, in the backfield, on the line and in the secondary and many of them have played together since they were 5 years old. They are not only talented, but they are some of the most grounded, hardest working and intelligent young men you will ever want to meet.  They don't need to be prompted by coaches to get work in during the months of January, February or March, they are already doing it on their own.  And guess what, the Mustangs that are coming behind them are preparing the same way.  Will they be able to continue what this class of Mustangs have done even if that run ends this weekend?  The answer to that question we won't know until about this time next year or the next few years after.
But it will be certainly fun to find out and those in the community will be as proud of their effort to do so as they are of these young men who have been taking Mustang fans on this fantastic ride.

Now THIS is either a total homer pick or an attempt to get reaction.
Brobie, I respect what Navarro has accomplished. It's the best team in their school's history. I've been watching game film on them all season knowing there was a good possibility we (WO-S) would play them in round 5. I was one of the few who picked them to beat Cuero. Here we are. WO-S has seen your team's offense eight or nine times this year. Navarro runs it better than all of the other teams we've seen, Plus, compared to all the other slot-T teams, they have the best passing game within that offense. Having a 6'3" dual threat QB/WR sure helps, too. I expect a competitive game from the Panthers.
Regardless of who wins, here is one thing you will conclude after this game. If you think your team is fast, you are about to witness CRAZY team speed. Go Mustangs!

Didn't you beat the Nederland drum all season? I was starting to suspect you was upset Nederland didn't make the playoffs cause you couldn't pull for them as you've had to do for last 8 years and then 15 years before that. Don't get all in a knot when you fire shots at a city and then yours gets in the news again and expect them to not say anything. And we will enjoy the spring game and take ANOTHER DC and beat central.....for the 7the straight year. Maybe TF should try some, might help out your program and give you central people something to be happy about instead to whining about the sub par coaching all season.

Can we all just agree that WOS gets the most bang for their buck?  The best coach in this area (IMO - can't imagine he's not in everyone's top 5) is the 16th highest paid coach.  But he would be the first to tell you, money isn't everything and home is where the heart is...

And this tete de tete about a sweep during the first round of the playoffs is kinda what kronos is talking about.  Say that Broncos94 is right and all of the All Pro athletes that are mired in the sub varsity ranks come out and shine like the stars that apparently everyone should believe they are and they sweep 22-5A in bi-district.  So what?  Only to be sent to the basketball courts the very next week as has been the recent experience?
While many have here disagreed with what he said and I too have my disagreements with some of his statements, most of the responses have borne out what he has claimed.
Now, where I have the major disagreement is the role of the coaches in this "failure" to reach beyond the second or third round.  The coach is but a very small component in that he sometimes has to battle his own school administration for control of the team or even worse, parents who might hold a little higher opinion of Little Johnny's skills than is warranted.  There is only so much that the coach can do, he can't force kids to workout on their own in off season and he can't help it when he doesn't have the support of his administration or even the community at large.  And finally, he can't help it when the team that he faces, much as we all hate to admit it, is simply better than our beloved team.  There are simply some situations where the other side has the horses that you don't and even Vince Lombardi being on the sideline instead of Ken Harrison, Brandon Faircloth, Larry Neumann, Jeff Mathews, or Toby Foreman.
Pretty much every bit of the community needs to be in lock step and at the very least, let the coach coach his team.  That is what you have by and large with the teams in this area that do succeed.  Cornel Thompson is the boss at West Orange-Stark.....W.T. Johnston is the boss in Newton.  I know you believe it is because of the "boo-boo" opponents as I have long been witness to the notion in existing in parts of Jefferson County that quality football is played only at 5A and above.  And it is buying into notions like that which paint you as much of the problem as being the bearer of the solutions.  I don't subscribe to the notion that it takes a village to raise a child, but it sure does take one to win a state championship.

This game, because of the opponent, has a little something extra to it for a number of WO-S fans. We've had a history with Giddings. One of the worst (and most unecessary) losses EVER in WO-S program history came against Giddings during Earl Thomas' senior year. Some of the absolute worst offensive playcalling ever occurred that night and the better team lost. I still have a bad taste in my mouth from that game. Then there was the year we beat Giddings in another playoff game and their Head Coach at the time (Fitzhenry) refused to shake hands with Coach Hooks. Fitzhenry is long gone, but these two experiences make some of our fans want to beat the snot out of the Buffaloes.
