I’ve posted this point several times over the years, but bear with me.  You know how us old timers tend to repeat ourselves

Agreed chorizo.  And the “heart”, I equate with tradition.  When Magnolia went up 21-0 halfway thru the 1st Qtr, I suspect, barring some freak, quick TD’s, BH was through.  It’s what happens at Schools without winning tradition (heart).  Teams with winning traditions, such as WOS, PNG, Ned, they’re bowing up and figuring out how to come back and win.  The kids believe they can win.  Call it heart, tradition, or mindset, it’s an intangible that’s almost impossible for a coach to overcome.

I think this point is way under appreciated.  In Safety and Leadership circles it is called “resiliency”. They call it “grit” in education circles.

I think it takes a couple of experiences of fighting out of the pit.  Then the culture can start to assume the identity. And it works the other way.  A culture gets down or behind, a couple people cave, and now, that is who you are.

This is an identity, for a group or team, that is established very early and very hard to shed.

  2. One or two years ago, when Crosby played at BH, BH had no running back.  I think one was hurt and the others were benched for team rules or academics.  I'm not sure.  But basically no RB.

They had "0" handoffs that game.  Just QB runs and short passes.  Then burn Crosby defense over the top once in a while.  That was a Coach making the best of the talent he had available.

I have only seen some clips from last nights game, so I am not sure.  Did you see coaches putting kids in the best position possible to be successful?

My kids have been playing against BH for years.  A great group of kids and parents.  They deserve better.

Wait a minute the coach from Barbers Hill has state rings. Must not know what hes doing.

I think you hit the nail on the head here. Not just rings. Multiple rings.

He knows what he is doing.

Is what he wants to do going to work at BH?

If what he wants to do doesn’t = wins, how long will BH let him continue?

Really BH Fan. You do know this is the first game.  Two defense starters out. Starting running back out. New QB not on point. How about you give number 4 and 1 some credit. How about giving our backup running backs some love. Brian Davis did well first his first running out here. Just saying.  I have faith in this system, team and coaching staff.

Uh...no. When is the answer not “well, we have injuries, and I have faith in the system”?

Seriously, I love Westerberg. But I don’t think BH is paying top shelf money for year after year of moral victories. That’s a good district with great support.  BH is spending the money to compete for championships.

This loss sucks. Maybe this isn’t going to work. Is that impossible to imagine?

  5. Very few things in this world are either/or.  Usually its a mixture or these things fall on a spectrum.  But it does seem great coaches uncover great athletes.  There are athletes everywhere.

    • Are they motivated?
    • Do they have the right mindset?
    • Are the coaches putting kids in places that work the best?
    • Do the coaches gameplan effectively?  (way underrated)

There is so much going on behind closed doors and at practices that we will never see that I find it hard to pin down this question.

My answer would be "It's the coach, and a huge part of a good coach is finding and motivating talented athletes."

On the pro level, who saw what Case Keenum has been able to do this year?  (cue the rabid UH fan)

I am pretty sure a Crosby poster was on here saying Crosby sat 4 or 5 starters. I would be shocked if that was the case.

Crosby didn't sit anybody.  Played the backup RB for the first series and he was effective.  Craig never got loose and NC has the best shutdown corner in the district.  Plays a lot of press man and can out-athlete any receiver on the field.  He will lose some (not many) to tall receivers.  Crosby has one tall receiver and he was on the trainers table early.

But....Crosby was down 35 - 13 with 5 minutes to go in the second quarter.  4th and 2 on their own 48 yard line.  Crosby punted.  Read into that what you will.

  7. I see some similar tackling from the Crosby defense.  They will have streaks of good tackling but there seems to be some regression to grab-and-wait-for-help.

My junior high son plays D-line.  He is trying to sneak into a RB or backup RB position.  I told him to just run right at the DB's, they won't tackle you and you will look like a stud.  The teams that beat them (in JH mind you) had runners that just ran.   No juking, stopping, hitches.  Teams that would gladly take 7-11 yards a run and then break out for longer runs.

I see too many HS ball carriers trying to out-athlete the defense.  The ball carrier runs out of room, stops to make a juke or move, and get smacked from the side from the rest of the defense.  I catch myself yelling at every game "JUST KEEP RUNNING!!"

No! That’s my opinion. Without trying to disrespect any other team...who have we played?  I’m curious to see how good our offense is against a really good defensive team. I’m might not like the outcome...

This is about gameplanning.  If they can jump on a team early and keep their foot on the gas, they can out gun almost any offense. If they can get to Hutto, that will be the test.

I see what your numbers say but the schedule was not easier in 2013. To open the season Crosby played a Nederland team coming off a 12-2 regional final appearance who eventually finished the season as undefeated district champs and went 10-2. That Nederland team had the #3 defensive tackle recruit in the country and probably had the best run defense in the region in '13, the Twins just shredded them. During district play they lined up with a Summer Creek squad that I believe was ranked #4 in the state at the time qb'd by UCLA commit Aaron Sharp and gave up 63 in an L. Crosby snuck by a Dayton team that eventually lost in the second round by one point to state finalist Brenham on a missed xp.

The score doesn't reflect it but the Jim Holley coached KP team Crosby beat by 24 that year was better than the Jim Holley coached Porter team Crosby only beat by 7 this year. KP had a 100m state finalist at receiver, their qb was a stud and signed with UTSA and they had a big TE Jordan Feuerbacher who just scored twice for Baylor this weekend. I believe CE King only won like 3 games that year with future Texas A&M 1,000 yard freshman running back Trey Williams, I think they would be competing for the 4th spot in this current district instead of finishing 6th like they did that year.

Another fallacy I see in the rankings is that they rank 7-2 4A-D2 Jasper(166) over where they would rank a 10-2 5A district champ in Nederland(240). Same for a Dayton(334) squad that lost by one point to a 5A state finalist in the area playoffs vs an LCM(308) squad that probably wouldn't win a game in this district. SC finished 11-1 that year and was ranked #166. For whatever reason the Maxpreps algorithms don't look kindly on any losses until you reach 6A or lose to a 6A.

Overall in 2013 Crosby's offense was better, the defense was a little better and the schedule was harder. District has nowhere near the game-changers it had back then either. FB Marshall is probably better than that Elgin team we lost to by 28 that year but if we don't fumble multiple times in the rematch this team may still be good enough to win, at which point Crosby would draw Hutto who is even better than the regional final team we beat.

The numbers, while not perfect, show Crosby facing a far easier schedule in 2013.  I don’t like the rankings a lot either but it is a crappy algorithm for everybody so that flattens the outliers a bit. I am an emotional fan and I put too much stock in feel or opinion, I am trying to post on the data.

Factoring in the Willis, New Caney, Porter, King, Barbers Hill teams.....the 2013 schedule was easier.

But, and everybody here knows this as much as I, numbers may not lie but they certainly don’t predict the future.  Every year in every division, there are teams with the numbers that go home early.  And a team that will out perform their data.  Hoping For Crosby.

Just for clarification, I think the season you’re referring to is the ‘03 season when Phillip Beck put up 2,202 receiving(second most in Texas history). 2004 is the only time the last 15 years Crosby missed the playoffs.

In 2013 Crosby had a better offense than the current version based on points per play which is the metric you would use to gauge explosiveness. They averaged 3 more yards per completion and 3.5 more yards per carry, as a team they averaged right at 600 yards per game and 54.5 points during the regular season while this version averages a shade under 53 points and about 545 yards per game. At this same point in that season Austin Walter had only one carry more than Craig but had already rushed for 2,085 yards, finished the season averaging 13.5ypc. Just felt like those kids should get their due.

I will say this version of Crosby is the most dynamic in terms of ways they can score but that was always going to be the case with #7 at qb.

The schedule was easier in 2013 but the team performed very well.  Second round exit that year.  Gross.

Crosby is not near the Crosby of old. Defensively they are not doing well enough to go very far. Offensively they are slinging some crazy numbers. I have a sneaky suspicion that it is partially to the fact that 21-5A is down from what they usually are. Even with Crosby's team being short of what they usually are they still will win this game.

I addressed this elsewhere.  Factoring in strength of opponent and point differential, the 2017 Crosby Football team is better than the 2014 Crosby Football Team that was one game away from a State Title game.  The lower the number at the bottom the better.  For reference, Manvel had a "7" a couple weeks ago.  I need to refresh the numbers.

I used the projection divisional breakdowns for this.  I probably spent stupid time doing this but if you want access to modify, just let me know.  I didn't create sheets for the divisions.

I like you guys.  don't get me wrong.  It would be kinda cool if somebody would double check and make sure my email and name isn't visible from that link.  Just curious.

I don't need any more emails for "lengthening pills".  I'm stocked up.

    texasfootball.com data says 434.

I scraped their data and I am adding the numbers noted in this thread.  I will highlight the thread numbers.  When there is a discrepancy, I will refer to the TF website (I think those are official).

I should have a google sheet shortly.

Frodo, no, but #2 QB was going to be the guy next year. He's has a good arm and moves well. He's  a Junior and since taking over has done well. PNG would for sure be the favorite, but I think we have the team to make it competitive. Our Defense has started really playing well the second half of the season.

BH has really started playing better.
